If there's one thing I hate it's statements designed to suppress and snuff clear and reasonable discussion.
Some people are just uncomfortable discussing certain topics, so they focus on the person instead as a way of deflecting. It's much easier to talk shit about somebody than to engage in the discussion at hand. Take a look at the article by Glenn Greenwald I posted on the Chomsky thread here on page one of the train on the subject of people attacking the character of those whose views they find unpalatable.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Ad hominem attacks seem to be the popular method of ending or pivoting a discussion, and that article was the perfect example.

Actually, I was hoping to hear some more from Australians on the subject of the Aborigines, as it's something I'm interested in. Personally, the only reason I'd ever visit Australia would be to see some Aboriginal communities and/or ceremonial or sacred sites, e.t.c. I wonder if any Australians here on the board have been up to the Northern territories, etc, and what they think of their native peoples, and their place in the country today. Practically every Australian I've ever talked with has expressed strongly racist views of the Aboriginals. What's the deal with that? Do Auzzies ever travel much within their own country, or are they mostly just interested in traveling abroad to places like London, or to their version of Ibiza - Bali?

The institutionalized racism that ALL people of color face in the Unites States DAILY is not the same as your grandpappys overt shit or the banana throwing European brand. Take a drive through parts of Baltimore or Detroit or Los Angeles and look at it yourself.
If racism bothers you so much Beezie, (judging by just the last 250 of your 20k+ posts, everything does...) then I challenge you to actually DO something about it. Instead of starting and then contributing to a number of inflammatory and generally unhelpful discussions about racism or war (on the Pearl Jam website ?? of all places...), then copying other peoples opinions from the web for days, why don't you actually formulate your own original viewpoint and then work toward change?
I don't know you at all, but it seems to me like you thoroughly enjoy the sound of yourself typing...what if you refocused that energy toward something positive?
So Beez, a year in, what are your thoughts on Lightning Bolt?
I totally agree with Hedonist- this was an interesting thread.... and then yet again degraded into the boring, fucking nonsense. quibling, childish phlegm ... even after an apology and an attempt to return to the subject at hand. FOR FUCKS SAKE, LETS MOVE ON!

Apology? What apology? This is what he said: "Commenting on the OP and not the topic was out of line and against the rules...my bad."
i'll respectfully disagree w/ hedonist & mr. lux... the thread is still very interesting, not "was interesting." a bit of debate-sparring is good for the soul. i suggest more of it

That wasn't directed at me. It was for the mods.
Anyway, fuck it.
Agreed. Let's move on.
It seems the aboriginal plight in Australia is very similar in ways to to that of the American Indian. I'll watch the video you posted after work- I'd like to learn more about it. Thanks for putting it up.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
It was an apology on my part, the post was made an hour and 15 minutes after my "insulting" post, and much like my insulting post, was completely directed right at you B.
I've made all of 3 comments in here before that, why do I have to worry about anything from the mods??
Did I personally insult you B? I was called the shit bomb...
So my name's 'B' now? And you're playing the victim card?
Cute.
Why don't we ask other posters what they think?
Did he insult me? Yes, or No?
He insulted you. He apologized. You never accepted that. You went on the attack.
Considering you continually make references to people taking exception to posts, I have to say- seeing as you asked for other posters' input- I'm a little surprised at your response.
it's always the same thing around here, racism and America is the worst of all according to Byrnzie and then there are the Byrnzie Buddy's that can't wait to follow his rant so sometimes I just have to laugh, we are all intitled to an opinion right ? ...I mean really..a topic titled worst racist country..we just can't get enough racism here on the train and everything that happens is underlined with racism....LMAO ! here's a quote from somebody other than Eddie. "everything we do comes first from our imagination"
Godfather.
Continually denying the existence of, and belittling the impact of racism IS racism.
I would agree with that thought, we can't ignore the fact that racism still exists in this country just may not be as obvious as it once was. I myself has faced racism from my own race. I was once questioned by an angry woman "why can't you date within your own race there's plenty of our own kind to go around." Instead of being confrontational in front of my date I simply told the woman..."give me your number cause after I say goodbye to her tonight, I'll be sure to give you a call just so that I can reach my required quota."
GF appears to think when a discussion about the negatives of America it's intensional is that America is hated. Far from the truth, in this country we CAN NOT be afraid, ignore, be reluctant or pussyfoot around things that this country is NOT proud of and racism is certainly one of them. It's a subject matter how one feels or thinks about it will never go away in this country unless every single one of us pack our shit up and leave. Then leave it those who were here before us.
So why not delve into the issue as best as we can whether it be serious or on a more comical point of view.....here we have Robin Williams & Richard Pryor on the trial of a black man...2:26 mark...

Racism within the race - where to begin? If you want to call being Jewish a 'race'... the other day an Orthodox Jew in the neighbourhood knocked on my door. I answered and he proceeded to tell me about a camp for Jewish youth he was raising funds for. I told him I wasn't interested. He asked me if I was Jewish. I skeptically responded that I was, and he proceeded to tell me then that I should know that I am obligated to be charitable by Jewish law. I told him that I am charitable and choose non-denominational causes that don't serve one religion only. He clarified that Jewish law says that I must put the needs of the Jewish people before the rest. I told him that I think that's ridiculous, that I disagree that Jewish law states that, and told him to get off my property. Fuck racism.

So live in very diverse city and in public everyone is so nice to one another. All people hold doors open. Say thank you. Help each other. Did some walking and had stereo typical "thug" in his Impala stop a crossed the crosswalk. Put in reverse so I could cross. Had my corporate monkey suit on with computer bag. Waved to him and he waved back. On bus right now and African American lady with stroller and three kids. White lady helped her kids on bus. She couldn't get luggage door closed so I went over to help as she got on bus. I'd never worked the door so younger black corp whore as myself instructed me on how to close. Have a nice black lady sitting next to me now and we're chit chatting on kids enjoying the bus ride.
So why do we have this animosity when we get back into our herds?

Commenting on the OP and not the topic was out of line and against the rules...my bad... sounds like an apology to me.
Continually calling him 'Shit Bomb' after he tried to clear the air sounds like an attack to me.
Please recognize the key terms in the previous two statements: sounds like... to me. I could be wrong, but that's how these things read to a neutral viewer.
You asked for people's two cents and I offered it. So, I am assuming your gratitude at the end of your post is sincere. As such... you're welcome!

With you on your first two sentences. Actually, overall a really nice post.
It's funny, ironic, I don't know...but tomorrow thirteen years ago much was similar. A sense of unity vs division, where it wasn't about color or class or dress or anything. Just a bunch of us going through something together.
This kind of thing should be the rule, not the exception. And, I think for many it is - courtesy, a smile, simple kindnesses.
Thanks for the reminder that the majority of folks aren't assholes.

And the other trolling posts at the top of this page - were they an effort to 'clear the air'?

The thread was interesting, and I think most of us in the classroom would like to see it continue without this-
