They said (on the video) that he was coming at them. It's hard to tell.
I guess I'd wonder if proximity to potential suspects leads to such responses. If they were further away and had the same discussion, perhaps more time for a less extreme response?
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Police Department Commissioner Bill Bratton have announced plans to give training to police officers to help them treat all citizens with equal respect and with equal regard for their safety.
"These changes are happening because the people demanded it," de Blasio said.
The pair appeared at a news conference Thursday, one day after a grand jury declined to indict police officer Daniel Pantaleo in the July death of Staten Island man Eric Garner.
Speaking at the New York City Police Academy, de Blasio said the city's officers will do things a different way. De Blasio also noted that despite large protests Wednesday, only 83 people were arrested.
You can watch the live video above; we'll update this post as news emerges.
So sad. Afghanistan Veteran with no criminal record having a serious mental breakdown shot dead while naked and empty handed. Where is the assault on the officer? Where is the attempt for the gun? Where in the hell is the justification for deadly force?
He advanced on the officer. What should he have done, RG? I ask because the cop needed to do something other than run away. He was called to the scene to seal with it and he had no idea what he was dealing with.
I'm thinking taser or pepper spray, but what if that didn't work?
Does a cop have to get into a hand to hand combat situation and be losing before pulling his gun?

I read the entire article, and nowhere did it specify one detail about what actually happened, except that the officer had mental health training and was carrying a taser (and of course, black victim, white officer). did I miss something?
I'll comment when I know more about this.
kudos to Mr Hill's family for their incredible non-judgment. Can't say I'd be the same in their shoes.

I'm a big fan of the taser, you'd think it would at least buy some time, even if it doesn't incapacitate. Time to draw the gun, and shoot if the suspect continues to advance.

That's upsetting. I'm not sure if he's getting ticketed for anything. That episode he did with Jerry Seinfeld was funny, but at the same time quite sad.
But what's the point of transferring him? Same asshole cop, different locale.
The guy had a bad day. We all have bad days. Give him some anger management classes, maybe a week off no pay.
Not a bad idea, given that I don't know his history - has it happened before, or does he have an otherwise exemplary record?
I have the utmost respect for those on the force who warrant it - and there are many - but were I in the driver's position? I'd be shaking (or worse!) if an officer treated me like that with no provocation.

A week off with no pay? For being an asshole? I'd think that's a bit harsh. Sure, he acted like a complete dick, but I don't think it's suspension worthy.

Why were they called to the scene?
