Yeah - don't know if anyone was talking about it in the MLB thread, but I enjoyed this article a lot: https://theathletic.com/638837/2018/11/07/boras-on-free-agency-his-company-and-the-ethics-of-an-agent-becoming-mets-gm/

I actually think I like Scott Boras. Dude's not wrong - MLB teams revenue has doubled in a decade and a player's salaries haven't followed with it. So, yeah, I'd say Harper should be getting like $600M.
$400M is a steal. CIGAR MONEY!

Yeah, that's good stuff and the first section is all about the Yankees.

Boras is the man.  Give the players the money.

I signed up for the service after hearing you guys chatter about it for a while.  Enjoying it so far.
    Interesting, the methods he uses.
Would be interested to see the actual #s that he is using.  Looked up a few out of curiosity.

A quick search for Top/Bottom/Reds payrolls over time.  (Included Reds since that is 'my team' and I was curious...as well as Phils, since this is Philly thread)

Opening Day Payrolls, per this site:

Average Team Revenues, per this article:

    2018
    Top Payroll - Red Sox - $235MM
    Low Payroll - As (wow!) - $68MM
    Phillies - $96MM
    Reds - $101MM
Average Team Revenue (2017, no data for 18 yet) - $315MM

    2008
    Top Payroll - Yanks - $209MM
    Low Payroll - Marlins - $21MM
    Phillies - $98MM
    Reds - $74MM
    Average Team Revenue  - $193MM

    2003
    Top Payroll - Yanks - $152MM
    Low Payroll - Rays - $19MM
    Phillies - $70MM
    Reds - $59MM
    Average Team Revenue - $129MM

There are lots of questions around what his statement really means....but we can see the average a team makes (if these are real numbers) has gone up almost 2.5x in the past 15 years.
I dont think that means the player spending should go up 2.5x (owners should be able to make more if they are running a better business) but it does seem crazy that the As can spend $68MM this season and contend....and make many x more than that.

    Interesting, regardless.

I don't understand the signing.  I don't think the Yanks beat the Indians if they have a healthy Santana and he is a fine player, but seems like a really odd signing for where this team is.

Again, pushing your best prospect to his 2nd position.

Phillies owner ready to spend: 'Maybe even be a little bit stupid about it'
    5h ago

DENVER CO - SEPTEMBER 30 Bryce Harper 34 of the Washington Nationals hits a ninth inning double against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on September 30 2018 in Denver Colorado

The Philadelphia Phillies are prepared to loosen the purse strings this winter.

"We're going into this expecting to spend money," team president John Middleton told Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY. "And maybe even be a little bit stupid about it. We just prefer not to be completely stupid."

The Phillies are rumored to be interested in all three of the top free agents on the market: outfielder Bryce Harper, shortstop Manny Machado, and starter Patrick Corbin, with several rival executives believing the club could sign two of the trio. All three are expected to entertain nine-figure overtures, with Harper and Machado potentially looking at record-breaking deals.

When asked about the possibility of spending upwards of $700 million on two of the top free agents, Middleton stayed mum.

"I don't know who you're referring to," the Phillies owner said. "But we will be spending."

Philadelphia currently has $68.9 million in guaranteed payroll heading into the 2019 season, a lower total than the division rival Washington Nationals and New York Mets.

Was there yesterday at pretty much the same time I think.  Hit up Espisito's, Claudio's, Tallutos and my girl Judy for produce.

The new barbacoa spot looks awesome. Much bigger.

Haha, apparently still not big enough!

My first, uh, political benefit of my career(?)...my co-committeeperson is a butcher at Esposito's. No waiting for me! Very much felt like a dick at first, then you look at your ticking time bomb of a baby sleeping in a stroller. Nope, no longer feel bad about it.

Wait really?  Espisito's butchers are involved in south philly politics? What guy?

Naaah, don't feel bad about it. Especially at that place.  It's a free for all on the weekend. Someone tried cutting me yesterday and we got after it a little bit.

This dude Leo - round guy, kinda short, glasses, Italian....so, ya know, South Philly butcher-looking guy. Haha, the deeper I go the more you see how many are involved in one way or another.

I hear ya - though, I don't knock people for being confused. They don't do a great job of being organized. Just like Philly politics!

Haven't been to McCusker's in ages because it's pretty much always been, um, not great. But judging on the "artwork", and their proximity to my house, I think I should give them some money...

McCusker's - need to check it out
Hop Sing - been 'splained to a few times, seems I need to take a look
Irwin's - I am nowhere near hip enough to set foot in there, based on that lounge @ Irwin's picture
Dirty Frank's -- you see the names and are told that one of these is a 'Pearl Jam Theme Bar ' -- which one do you pick?

Signing Craig Kimbrel: Pros, cons, and predictions
    6h ago
Elsa / Getty Images Sport / Getty
BOSTON MA - OCTOBER 05 Craig Kimbrel 46 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates after making the final out in the ninth inning against the New York Yankees in Game One of the American League Division Series at Fenway Park on October 5 2018 in Boston Massachusetts The Boston Red Sox won 5-4

In this six-part series, theScore's MLB editors break down the pros and cons of signing the top free agents in this year's class, and predict where they'll end up. Today, we're looking at Craig Kimbrel, a seven-time All-Star who spent the last three seasons with the Boston Red Sox.

    Pros/cons

    He's still an elite closer

If signing a closer to a multi-year deal in free agency isn't your cup of tea, keep Kimbrel's resume in mind. Over the past three campaigns, only Kenley JansenEdwin Diaz, and Aroldis Chapman are worth more WAR among relievers. He has been good for 31 or more saves every season of his career, strikes out a ton of hitters (13.9 SO/9 in 2018), and limited the opposition to a .146 average this past season. Kimbrel is also cold as ice and owns the ninth. In high-leverage situations last year, hitters managed just a .501 OPS and in the ninth, they could only muster an OPS+ of 48. MLB's active saves leader also finished fourth in Win Probability Added (3.66) among relief pitchers last season, which proves the 30-year-old right-hander remains a positive contributor to his team's success.

    But his value is decreasing

Let's not be hasty. Kimbrel is good; since he debuted in 2010, no reliever has been more valuable (19.0 WAR), but two of his worst seasons came in the past three years, and he looked human during the postseason when he allowed eight earned runs and walked nine in 14 innings. In 2018, Kimbrel's strikeout rate was his lowest since playing in San Diego, his walk rate exceeded four per nine, and his seven home runs allowed were a career high. His 3.13 FIP among relievers ranked 46th in baseball - behind Drew VerHagenDylan Floro, and Ken Giles. His velocity also tailed off by about 1 mph and should continue to dip as he gets older.

    And he'll be expensive

Kimbrel remains valuable at 30 years of age and he'll certainly command a long-term deal, which can be risky business. With Aroldis ChapmanKenley Jansen, and Wade Davis setting the market value for closers of similar effectiveness, someone will overpay for Kimbrel. However, for every Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman (pitchers who amassed saves into their late 30s and early 40s), there have been B.J. Ryans and Heath Bells (closers who were grossly overpaid and regressed after signing). And as the San Francisco Giants are learning with Mark Melancon's current deal, spending big bucks for a pitcher to throw one inning, no matter how important it may seem, is a gamble that can quickly become regrettable.

    Best fits

    Boston Red Sox

    • The World Series champions need a closer. As it stands, they'd enter next season with unproven candidates Ryan Brasier and Matt Barnes as their top choices. Kimbrel did reject Boston's qualifying offer, but he did so to earn a more lucrative contract and not necessarily because he doesn't want to play in Beantown. Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski isn't shy when it comes to spending owner John Henry's money, so a reunion with Kimbrel wouldn't be surprising.

    St. Louis Cardinals

    • The Cardinals haven't had much success signing relievers to free-agent deals over the past few seasons - Greg Holland and Brett Cecil immediately come to mind. While Jordan Hicks looks like the real deal, he's only 22 and has just six career saves. Bud Norris saved 28 games for them in 2018 but doesn't look like a long-term solution, and Carlos Martinez is expected to return to a starting role in spring training. Signing Kimbrel could provide a stopgap in the ninth. He's allowed just eight earned runs in 57 1/3 innings against NL Central teams (not including the Cardinals) during his career.

    Philadelphia Phillies

    • The Phillies are expected to spend serious dollars during the offseason and they're reportedly showing interest in Kimbrel. Philadelphia threw save opportunities at 10 different players last season, so some stability in the ninth would be welcomed. Money might be best saved for runs at Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, however, as the club has a greater need at shortstop and in the outfield.

    Prediction

Kimbrel signs a five-year, $90-million deal with the Phillies.
