Not sure if this was posted yet, but here's a great link my friend sent me that actually lets you listen to 5 different tracks in high def vs compressed. You can take the test to see if you can really tell the difference and can toggle back and forth which is really cool. I think this is the first time I actually appreciated the Momentums. I couldn't tell the difference with the Sony MDR-V6 but the Momentum allowed me to get 4/5 of the test correct. Still not sure if that means I'm wasting my money since it was REALLY tough in some cases to tell the difference. Let me know what you guys think:

    4 out of 5-
missed the Dixie Chicks but goddamn i would never listen to that anyway...
and could they have picked any shittier bands for the test.
i felt like i was in A Clockwork Orange listening to this bullshit music.

    .

  • Finally got my PJ Pono 219 of 495. It sounds incredible. I've tried songs of every bit rate from crappy 192 kbps all the way to the Leeds bootleg in 24 bit. I have zero disappointment in the sound. However, the software is the glitchiest pain in the ass software I've ever used. It is nearly impossible to get the Pono to be recognized by the computer and load tracks and eject it without repeat failures. I still can't figure out how to have the software recognize the SD card that it came with to add additional tracks to it.

Dang I failed that test. Granted I was listening through headphones on my computer, but did not notice much difference. Scored 2 correct :(

that is because there is no noticeable difference to the human ear

    viva la cd!
I think that is the reason CDs were made to be 44.1kHz. Isnt that about the top end of human hearing?
to my understanding that is correct

Humans can't hear frequencies above 20 kHz. The sampling rate for CDs is set at just over double that to ensure that it captures frequencies up to, and including, 20 kHz.
that is my understanding... i have also read that 20 kHz is the high end and most humans cant hear above 15 kHz...

i LOVE Neil... but when i hear him explain this away by saying you will "feel" the difference i just laugh, he must be smoking again lol

Compressed as in MP3? I wonder how people would fare in CD Quality Flac Vs. HD FLAC? :)

I missed The Killers one right at the start. 4 in a row afterwards. Bass deeper on DC sample, clarity and headroom for The Eagles. Bass and depth on DP and I fuckin' guessed the other one.

Well, the sampling rate is only one part of the equation. The bit depth is also a factor in terms of hearing the dynamic range (the difference between the highs and the lows). Like the sampling rate, some say that 24 bit depth is overkill.

Quick question. I finally received my shipping confirmation for my Pono device. How long after folks receive those confirmations does it take for it to arrive? I received a UPS shipping confirmation two days ago stating that a label was being created and shipping info would be updated shortly but haven't seen any updates since then.

Nope. Listened to it today in the car - even though it is 16 bit, still had gaps. When using the Pono App on your compy, you can set it to gapless, but the feature will not hit the player itself until 2015. I read that on the forums. Hope that helps - great question BTW.

Well, received the early bird Black Pono Player today. Small custom box. On the UPS slip it said .. Total Value For Duty .. $454.40. So .. I had to pay $105.78 for customs. Totally gutted. The early bird Black Pono Player was $215 shipped to Canada. They put $454.40 on the custom form. I sent them an email & soon a scan of the paying slip. Doubt they will do anything about it. Totally blows! :(

Why in God's name do companies use UPS for shipping international packages? WHY? Please DO NOT use UPS!! I'm begging you. If you are shipping anything internationally, never in your LIFE use UPS.

OK so I stepped up the headphone game a bit. The Momentums were tight around my ears and while they are light and look beautiful, I felt they were just lacking something. Just too meh. I needed closed cans to keep the kid noise out so I bought the NAD Viso HP50 and also the PSB M4U-2. Both of these are designed by an audio God named Paul Barton, and all I can say is that I now worship at the Temple of Paul.

First let me just say that they both look ridiculous on your head. This is not the kind of thing I would wear out of the house or office. Let me also say that after listening to them, I give zero fucks how they look.

Now to the important part...the sound. And HOLY SHIT. I am listening to Ten Redux, an album (albeit remixed) that I have heard literally 10,000,000 times since I was 14 years old. There is so much freaking subtlety that I can hear with both of these headphones that I just never heard before. It's like I'm hearing this record for the first time. Eddie asks for spare change in Even Flow? "God bless"? When the fuck did they add that part to the song? How could I not hear that the first 10,000,000 times I've heard this record? Oh, and the bass end...good lord the base...it's just...beautiful. I can literally hear their fingers sliding on the instruments, hear the piano clearly in Black, hear every little high hat closure.

Now the hard part: which one of these glorious devices to keep. The hell if I know.

    Yeah, that does help. Thanks.

I was trying to figure out how to set up the player to gapless but couldn't . Now i know why>LOL>I don't think that makes sense that they didn't have that feature right from the get-go. Who wants to listen to a concert with GAPS between EVERY song?

    Thanks again.

They will be releasing an update for gapless playback.

I purchased the HD Flac of Moline, it is amazing. I can't get enough of Off He Goes.
