bullies use the "it was just a joke" all the time. now I neither applaud nor condemn Smith for his actions. but in a business driven by appearace to large degree, maybe question someones choice in dress but not physical being.

thinking rock should be glad it happened on stage and not in an alley. slap is mild compared to what could have happened.

They are both weirdos.  (The Smiths)

You come off as a well adjusted person, with comments like that.

They are weirdos.  The whole family is, just a fact.

excusing violence is an odd take.

had will be a normal human being, he would have stayed calm, and used his acceptance speech to bring light to the disease his wife has and how distasteful rock's comments were. that would have been more effective. or,  obviously not knowing yet that he would have that platform, go up to rock on stage, whisper in his ear "my wife has alopecia-apologize now or we have problems". but no, he chose violence.

the fact that so many people are applauding this/excusing this is beyond me.

Haven't seen the video - but do you think he cares enough? Even with Will Smith being embarrassing, I would be embarrassed about joking about someones disease/condition that obviously affects that person -- seemingly affects her enough for a person closed to her to get up on stage during the Oscars and slap me.

Maybe, and bear with me a second because I know this might be a huge stretch of logic, but maybe Chris didn't know about her condition?  And maybe, just maaaaybe Chris didn't even write the joke and was reading off a teleprompter.  And maybe, just maybe, no joke justifies physical assault?  Violence apologists are so cringey.

You want to make millions by living your life in the public eye then you need a thick skin.  Given her condition then probably shouldn't have made that joke, but nonetheless, it wasn't worth doing what he did.

More than that, it was assault.  It could have easily escalated and Chris could have been seriously hurt depending on how Will struck him.  The applause for Will, the fact he was allowed to stay there and not immediately charge, and then given an award and went up there justifying his actions as being a 'vessel for love' and 'defending his family' was absolutely appalling.

Don't see how it would affect the comments made.

Thanks for the advice, and the thought, though.

Yeah. I love the Smiths. They are an insanely talented family. And while I understand why Will Smith did what he did, I don't think that we as a society should condone it. He should be punished just like any other citizen should be.

If this were a random audience member at one of Chris Rock's standup shows, then I'm willing to bet that, at the very least, that random audience member gets escorted out of the auditorium. Whether to press charges would, of course, still be up to Chris Rock in this hypothetical because that's the fucked up country in which we live. I'd press my luck here, though, and bet that Rock would press charges against a random audience member over Will Smith.

correct. I just said this to my wife a bit ago, that if it was some random "seat filler" that ran up on stage and attacked Rock, they would have been tackled by security and arrested immediately. But....rich and famous.

If I was called a witness to a crime - wouldn't that mean authorities had made the decision that my information was important, even with me not seeing the crime?

In that instance, it wouldn't be a matter of it making a difference to me --  but whether it made it to them?

I thought the joke was funny w the bald head.  I had no idea that she had alopecia.  I thought that was something you had all your life and not something that got worse as you got older.  My buddy and his daughter both have that.

Of course he has.  Why in the world would he want to waste time with all the court b.s. over a face slap from Will Smith?   I'd just want to move on from it.  Now, if Smith has a history of violence that would be a different story.

Just saw the uncensored clip. Will Smith has had it with Hollywood and people making fun of him and his wife’s situation. The man is on the verge of becoming a Hollywood statistic of someone who loses it….I’m looking at Mel Gibson for similarities.

The funniest thing about this is he upstaged his own Best Actor win.

But hypothetically, do you think he would waste time with all the court b.s. with a less monied and less celebrated violent offender (that is to say, one with no chance of fighting it in court)?

I just feel bad for the next average American goon who gets offended by a comedian's joke at a standup show and now thinks it's OK to assault the comedian because there will be no legal consequences.

if some nobody just slapped him across the face on the street? I agree, probably not. But in this instance, he's probably so embarrassed he just wants to put it behind him. plus, even if he didn't know about the alopecia before, the look of charging Smith makes it look like he's whining about a consequence that many feel is justified.

If someone thinks this is free reign time on comedians then they are foolish.

I could see charging someone you thought would be a repeat offender.  But if you thought it was random, felt like the offender was sorry, and wasn’t going to endanger someone else or yourself, then it seems like something I would move on from assuming no injury.

I would bet there are bar fights every day that are much worse than this that don’t result in charges on either side.

Yes, I've been in my fair share of those. Probably would've only been one time if I had been charged with assault, though....

So fucking weird Will smith won Best Actor after this. Like what are the odds. But, ofcourse him being nominated and a big star makes him being placed on the front row. Otherwise maybe he would have been placed on row 2 or 3. And that would have made it harder to have that kind of an outburst. So in a way the odds were bigger because of him being a star and nominated.

If Smith should be charged with anything, it should be for slapping like a bitch. If you're gonna slap a man (which is already pathetic) in defense of your wife, you need to hit him with some palm. Make him feel it. Rock hardly flinched. I could see why people thought initially it might've been a joke. If someone told me to slap them in the face as a joke, I'd slap exactly as hard as Smith did.

I've noticed the change in human behavior where this will becoming more of a norm.  People running on to ball fields or wanting to do something drastic for their IG.
