I do think that Chris Rock should press charges. Pretty clear case.
Haven't seen the video - but do you think he cares enough? Even with Will Smith being embarrassing, I would be embarrassed about joking about someones disease/condition that obviously affects that person -- seemingly affects her enough for a person closed to her to get up on stage during the Oscars and slap me.

It doesn't matter if he cares enough, a human being committed a violent act upon a another human being. The offender should be charged.

We let shit like this go all the time, and it spirals into "stand your ground" laws and the like in the US in which violence is actually encouraged by the law.

If my best friend slapped me in anger, I would press charges. This is, of course, a hypothetical because I don't have any friends.

I wish that law enforcement agencies could press charges on their own in cut-and-dry cases like this.

we don't know that chris knew about jada's condition. he may have thought he was making a "style choice" joke, which is fair game at awards shows; always has been. if he did know, it was a slimy joke. but not worthy of assault.

will smith should be charged. I'm stunned he was allowed to stay. best actor or not. then those boobs in the audience give that fuck a standing ovation? anthony hopkins said "I agree with everything Will Smith said...every word". WTF. what universe do these people live in?

You want to make millions by living your life in the public eye then you need a thick skin.  Given her condition then probably shouldn't have made that joke, but nonetheless, it wasn't worth doing what he did.

I literally never watch award shows. My wife said she wanted to, so the four of us sat down and watched it. Now I have to explain to my daughters that what The Fresh Prince of Bel Air did and said "love makes you do crazy things" is exactly what an abusive partner says.

I find the american way so backwards. in canada it's not up to the victim if charges are brought.

Yes, in my opinion, LAPD Oscar detail officers should've had the authority to remove the violent offender from the event.

By letting him stay and receive his AWARD, it sends the message that this is acceptable behavior.

I mean, If I get caught clocking someone in the bleachers at Fenway Park, at the very least, I don't get to watch the rest of the game.

comedians toe that line all the time finding where that boundry is.some get knocked on their ass for it.  call it childish, both ways, but do any of us really evolve past the schoolyard? like to think I have. somewhat. but that doesnt mean the primal thought doesnt show up.

bullies use the "it was just a joke" all the time. now I neither applaud nor condemn Smith for his actions. but in a business driven by appearace to large degree, maybe question someones choice in dress but not physical being.

thinking rock should be glad it happened on stage and not in an alley. slap is mild compared to what could have happened.

They are both weirdos.  (The Smiths)

You come off as a well adjusted person, with comments like that.

They are weirdos.  The whole family is, just a fact.

excusing violence is an odd take.

had will be a normal human being, he would have stayed calm, and used his acceptance speech to bring light to the disease his wife has and how distasteful rock's comments were. that would have been more effective. or,  obviously not knowing yet that he would have that platform, go up to rock on stage, whisper in his ear "my wife has alopecia-apologize now or we have problems". but no, he chose violence.

the fact that so many people are applauding this/excusing this is beyond me.

Maybe, and bear with me a second because I know this might be a huge stretch of logic, but maybe Chris didn't know about her condition?  And maybe, just maaaaybe Chris didn't even write the joke and was reading off a teleprompter.  And maybe, just maybe, no joke justifies physical assault?  Violence apologists are so cringey.

Maybe watch the video before commenting on it and talking down to others about it?  Just a thought.

More than that, it was assault.  It could have easily escalated and Chris could have been seriously hurt depending on how Will struck him.  The applause for Will, the fact he was allowed to stay there and not immediately charge, and then given an award and went up there justifying his actions as being a 'vessel for love' and 'defending his family' was absolutely appalling.

Don't see how it would affect the comments made.

Thanks for the advice, and the thought, though.

Where have I apologized for violence? Or was that just a thought?

I hope you're never called a witness to a crime you didn't actually witness, since actually seeing it makes no difference to you.
