Before the liberals get too high and mighty in this thread, they should check out pictures of late term abortions that they support. Talk about barbaric.
this has nothing at all to do with abortion. not even close. this situation is a company punishing one of its employees for embarrassing the company. this is not a free speech issue because the constitution only protects you from the government throwing your ass in jail for what you say. it does not prevent a company from punishing you or firing you for what you say.

but since you brought up abortion, i will speak on behalf of all liberals when i say that we do not like abortion. we do not like the procedure. we do not like how it is done. we do not like the fact that a fetus dies as a result. it is a terrible, unfortunate, thing. but we support a woman's right to choose what happens within her own body. it is a rights issue. the government can not force a woman to carry a fetus to term. and that is why i will always fight for women's reproductive rights. if men could carry a baby, abortion would have never, ever, been illegal in the first place. anybody that thinks liberals "like" abortion is an idiot.

I know this thread wasn't about abortion, but Republicans were getting trashed in it so I just wanted to clarify that each side has problems. I understand the liberal belief of freedom of choice, but at the end of the day liberals protect laws that kill innocent babies in brutal fashion. Yes, liberals have their reasons, but facts are facts and you can't deny that millions of babies have been killed legally due to liberals' votes. I'm just stating facts here. I never said liberals like abortion, but they certainly support it and it is a record/history that they cannot run from or try to justify away. Legalized brutality - not a legacy I would want to leave behind and that is what the liberals have chosen. I hope the freedom of choice is worth it. Did not realize choice/options trumped life (unless safety of the mother is involved).

I understand your view on abortion. What I don't understand is your view that your opinion should outweigh that of any pregnant woman making a decision about it. I don't think that mine does.

As far as "brutal killing", yes I don't like that. Most abortion, largely done before a fetus or embryo or fetus can feel pain, doesn't qualify. Late term abortion involves the balancing of a woman's rights and a fetus's, and the born woman wins, in my opinion. Factory farming and modern slaughterhouses do their fair share of brutal killing of billions of animal a year. If this is what you oppose, not becase of your religious belief that a human life begins at conception, I sure hope that you are a vegan. Otherwise, I will point out your own hypocrisy

I tuned into Duck Dynasty a few times over the last few days.

I really don't see how that show can be that popular. Just absolute stupidity. It's obviously scripted...about as far away from reality TV as you can get.

This one episode I saw had one of the morons losing his wedding ring in the swamp. Si had a metal detector back home so he goes back to get it. As he's walking out of the shed with it it goes off and he just happens to remember that he buried a can of coins at the spot in his yard 40 years ago so they ditch the wedding band search and dig up the can.

Meanwhile the other morons give up the search on their own and decide to get a tattoo of a wedding band but the moron is afraid of needles. Then lo and behold the moron conveniently finds the wedding band in his pocket and the show is over as they all gather around the dinner table.

The commentary they deliver in between scenes is so goddamn stupid I can't handle it.

I agree with you, man. But it's just nice that this guy is standing up and telling people to stop idolizing him. It's a first step. But yeah, with the millions he's making, he could be donating it to the Vet fund.

It is stupid. What does one exactly expect from reality TV other than to veg out to someone's else's dull life?

The whole concept of television may be for entertainment, but it's become more a vehicle of "stupid" entertainment, a "dumbing down" of society so to speak. Don't even get me started about the dumbing down of America through the commercials! We all have a choice of shutting it all off.

i was thinking of starting my own porn production company and basing my first line of films on duck dynasty. instead of making duck calls, the family will make women's sexual toys. the guys will all wear these big fake beards, and the women will be much hotter than the women in the show. i am gonna call it "Dick Dynasty"...

can you imagine? that series of films will practically write itself. i could make millions...

unfortunately, Prince of Dorkness might have already beaten me to it...

My brother, who, possibly not coincidentally agrees with Phil's take on homosexuality, was telling me last night about this very episode, and I thought, how can a scenario like that NOT be scripted??? It sounded so utterly moronic. And my brother, a very imtelligEnt person despite his religious bigotry issues, loves this show.

Thing is, everyone finds different things entertaining. I used to love WWF/WWE. People laughed at me for how utterly stupid it was, and therefor by extension this made me stupid. Also, my sister, another very intelligent professional, watches every reality show and American karaoke show there is.

Let's try not to judge those by what they watch, and more by what they do themselves.

Fair enough, but I wonder exactly what it is about these types of shows that suck people in? I mean if the show actually showed a bunch of backwater morons and their follies... it might be entertaining, but the obvious scripted element to them makes the show seem like baseline entertainment at best.

Watching is doing, sitting on the couch is doing. If you spend your time watching every reality and karaoke show, that's basically what you're doing. If you make your life by choosing to watch someone elses? That's you doing nothing. (not you personally, your sister's)

It's psychological manipulation and the fact that there's nothing intelligent on tv else to watch. And the choice of sitting and watching tv.

For some tv is for thought provocation, for some it's entertainment, and for some it's escapism and further still for some it's to shut their brain off from life. I think that's the draw for some of these shows. And no, it's not my sisters whole existence, it's her time between her son's bed time and hers. Some people read trashy romance novels, some spend endless amounts of time talking to strangers on the internet about what others watch on tv, and some just watch tv. How is one possibly better or worse than another??

Touche, but I challenge my beliefs and learn from others from debating online, I (and everyone else) turn to jello vegging out to reality tv. It serves no other purpose.

Sometimes it's nice to just be...entertained.

I watch the show on occasion and enjoy it.

I get that some is contrived. I also get that some of everything is contrived; videos, twitter, PR, "news" segments, Hollywood, politics.

    And on.

That quote about focusing on other, more important things...isn't that correct? All this furor over his words - not his actions, least from what I know - and he's saying to shift energy to issues that really matter.

(and from what I've read, the family is quite charitable)

I feel pretty good saying that I'm not an idiot, hateful or misguided. Most people I know, whom I respect and who respect me, would neither attribute those qualities to me nor write me off for watching a television show.

  • I (and everyone else) turn to jello vegging out to reality tv. It serves no other purpose.

And that exact same argument could be made by someone who watches reality tv about someone who watches a pearl jam DVD more than once. Or watches any type of game show. Or soap opera. Or sports. My point is every single person falls into this same category of watching some type of brain numbing entertainment. So none of us have any more right to judge someone for the content they find entertaining than anyone else.

Awesome attempt to derail the thread with your regressive way of thinking.
Bet you think homosexuality is a liberal choice as well

Wasn't trying to derail the thread. I don't post much on the Train so itsn't like I'm out here trying to push an agenda. The point of my post was clear in that liberals are bashing Republicans in this thread for their "backward thinking" and it seemed ironic to me considering that liberals support legalized killing of babies. That is the truth and even you can't disagree with it because there is a law on the books that liberals got on the books for abortion.

If you can't recognize that a legacy of dead babies is fucked up, then I don't know what to say. Just like you can't understand a Christians views based on the Bible, some of us can't understand supporting abortion.

Anyway, we all deserve a little criticism when we get to high and might, holier than thou, etc... so I just wanted to send the liberals a reminder that they still support baby killin' so nobody is perfect.

Just because someone bashes a Republicans doesn't mean they are liberal. I bash Republicans a lot and I am not liberal.

    Just thought I'd clarify that.

I guess that just means you are okay with the inaccurate generalizations he made...and by that I mean him thinking all African-Americans were happy and did not hate whites before Civil Rights.

I know he said he personally never saw them unhappy, but he also stated all were happy, too.
