Pendulum overkill

I think it is great that they're giving every fan an opportunity to experience Pendulum as the opener. When they opened with it in Pittsburgh, I loved it and I was hoping that was the song they'd use to open the tour. It's a great opener.
When they opened with it in Buffalo, I was still pretty happy to hear it again (and I was surprised). I think that they'll have Pendulum open for leg 1 & 2, then they'll add it to the rotation.
Pendulum was one of the top songs that I wanted to hear off the new album, but Getaway was the one I wanted most. Glad to see they've debuted it last night.Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Noblesville - May 07, 2010

As manic as most of us are as fans, the VAST MAJORITY of music fans are normal people who only go to shows IN THEIR TOWN (or not more than 30 min away). AND... wait for it... they only go to ONE SHOW, even if there are 2 shows in their town.
IN OTHER WORDS... for the majority of people at any given PJ show, they will only see that ONE and ONLY show.
PJ apparently feels that for this LIghtning Bolt tour, Pendulum as the 1st opener sets a tone they like. They want every fan to experience. Tough nougies for those of us who go to 2, 5, 15 shows on every tour. Deal with it.
Me, I only saw 2 shows, but I really enjoyed it, and if I were going to more I'd think of it as intro music for the tour and love it still.0 -
I hope they'll open the european shows in 2014 with Pendulum too.
Such a great song!0 -
Since I'm only going to one show this tour, I'm fine with it opening the show, especially since they've been doing traditional openers after it.Tres Mts- 3/16/2011

Agree with the OP, hate knowing already what the opener will be before I even get there...it's almost to the point, lets go in later just to hear the next song. Kind of takes the excitement out of the opener anymore. That being said, I understand why they are doing it with the new album and all so hopefully once the Lightning Bolt tours are over they will go back to normal.

I'm sure this has been said, but it's being followed with traditional openers so its like a bonus.
Be glad they didn't release it in 09 when it was recorded!0 -

Well really, I'm just saying that I understand why some people are wondering about it and hoping for a switch up. I personally don't mind... it's just not the norm for the band, so seems like a surprising choice, at least for the two show venues.
Ok, ok, we're still friends.
And you're right (as usual), it is pretty surprising but I think that it's just another ingredient in this weird mix that has helped define this release and tour. There have been a lot of cool and different choices made this time around (probably only noticeable to us crazies) that I think are keeping things fresh for a band that's been around for awhile yet still clearly excited about this record. I think they love the song, it sets a tone and it's a nice warm up for Ed's voice. And then, and this is what's so cool about them, they give us a traditional opener right after. That's not by accident. That's clearly done on purpose and I appreciate that.0 -
pure madness.... amazing song into an amazing follow up.

If they're doing the whole song, it's an opener, and maybe the "it's just an intro" people are in denial?
Anyway, love the song, I think it's good enough to be played at pretty much every show for this tour, but I don't see why they keep opening with it night after night, especially twice in the same city. that's just not like them, so understand why some going to a lot of shows wish they'd mix it up.
If it is not their new intro then what is? As far back as I can remember they have also come out to a song, be it metamorphosis, master/slave, red dot, etc.; there is none of that. The one show they didn't play the song, it was the instrumental they walked out to. Is it that much of a reach to assume they are using a live song to set the tone/ anticipation typically created by entrance music?
Thank You!! Spoken like a champ!0 -

What this person said...
As long as it doesn't interfere with "normal" openers, it's all good.Is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?0 -

Since when did an intro get listed as the first song in the official setlist?? Never, that's when. Pendulum is their first song on the setlists, which means it's the opener.
And they haven't used any intro music for a while. They didn't use any in Missoula, I know that for sure. They just walked on stage and started the show. Did they use intro music in London or Wrigley? I don't think they did, but am not positive. I'm pretty sure they have simply stopped having intro music like Metamorphosis, and are just starting with their opener... Which is, for the time being, usually Pendulum, because yes, it sets the tone, which is what an opener does. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. i still dont understand how no one realizes the opener is the second song now, sometimes third too. in fact dont even count pendulum as the opener because its not, its the intro to the show just like when they did metamorphosis 2, or master/slave, or that Baba thing. having 2-3 openers in the start of the show is 100000x better than starting with corduroy, why go, animal, last exit, etc because you can see those songs deeper in the set. so when you're anticipating to hear a new opener each night wait until after pendulum.Beacon '08

Release since 1991 has basically always played first, now its been played second. how is that not an indicator? i dont know what else to tell you, dont go to shows if it bothers you that much.Beacon '08

It's not a intro. They stand on stage and play the song. It is the opener. If they were only playing Pendulum and skipping the traditional openers altogether I would have a problem with it. But getting Release, Wash or Long Road in the two spot is still getting Release, Wash or Long Road.
Curious if we will see less of Pendulum on the second leg.Post edited by JimmyV on___________________________________________

All that Release being played second means to me is that they are now playing Release second instead of as the opener, and really going with the slow build up with their shows now. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Ill try and clarify what i said earlier.
Technically, you are right. It is the "opening song". It is the "opener".
But what others are saying, is, that they are playing the "typical" opening songs second now..
Every show, is Pendulum, followed by what? Release, Long Road, Wash, Sometimes, etc. Those are ALL opening songs of past tours.
So since they are doing that, people still feel that songs like release and long road are the true opening songs. Why? Because its still a mystery. You dont know if it will be small town or wash. It still has the same suprrise to it, like the old shows did with the opening song.
Thats why many are calling it the "intro" because its being played every night, like intro music. Like metamorphisis (sp?) before it. Like master/slave before it.
I hope you can see why we are saying that.
Now, i have a question. In the Boston 1 show, they did not play pendulum, but, it said they came out to the song with no lyrics.
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=220408
Anyone know if it was the cd? Or the band playing with no vocals?
Lastly, i really love this song, and every time i hear it now i think of a show starting, which is even better. If it had been released in 2009 when it was recorded, do you think they would have still started each show with that song? I cant believe it was written and recorded 4 years ago and we just now are hearing it live.0 -

That's fine. I get all that.... but it's still not actually an intro. Pearl Jam has simply changed how they're doing things. That's why I said everyone calling it so is in denial. I stand by that statement. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0
