Technically, you are right. It is the "opening song". It is the "opener".
But what others are saying, is, that they are playing the "typical" opening songs second now..
Every show, is Pendulum, followed by what? Release, Long Road, Wash, Sometimes, etc. Those are ALL opening songs of past tours.
So since they are doing that, people still feel that songs like release and long road are the true opening songs. Why? Because its still a mystery. You dont know if it will be small town or wash. It still has the same suprrise to it, like the old shows did with the opening song.
Thats why many are calling it the "intro" because its being played every night, like intro music. Like metamorphisis (sp?) before it. Like master/slave before it.
That's fine. I get all that.... but it's still not actually an intro. Pearl Jam has simply changed how they're doing things. That's why I said everyone calling it so is in denial. I stand by that statement.
I agree with you here. And the reason why I find it interesting to talk about is that I've never seen them do something like this. It takes away from the fun of guessing the first song or the feeling you get when you are surprised by the first notes...Even if you go to ONE show, you might have seen the setlists and now that mystery is gone. Personally, I love the mystique of the opener (in the past obviously)...I think i've only even heard intro music once or twice in 16 shows. My favorite opener was one time in '98 when I thought they'd come out and noddle into Release or Long ROad, and instead they fucking killed it bursting into Hail, Hail. They surprised the shit out of me.
My point is, I guess, that this is just out of the ordinary for the boys...and its no big deal really, just something to talk about. More than anything it really makes me wonder how they each feel individually about Pendulum. You always hear of each member disliking certain songs or preferring another...well, here's one they all seem to agree on!Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -
It never ceases to amaze me. I have to admit, I'm not a member of any other fan clubs, music or otherwise, but I'm curious if there is another fan club out there that is on its collective period as much as this one. Don't you fucking idiots understand that there are still MILLIONS of people out there who would love to see just one PJ show, EVER, but may never get to due to geography or the fact that it costs quite a bit of money? My sister is 47 years old, and when I posted something on Facebook about going to my third show on this tour, she commented "Have fun, I've never been to a concert before." Not a PJ concert. She's never been to a large scale show of any kind. She has a family and not much money. So there are literally millions of people out there who would read a petty ass complaint like this and think "wow, what a spoiled bunch of pretentious little bitches." and they would be right. Count your lucky stars and quit your bitching.0

fair point. Now start playing getaway. and I don't want to hear they're saving it. You don't save songs when you go thru NYC, Philly and Mass.
Wrong. Look what was just played in Charlotte.

Umm, chill dude... I cant afford any shows and im not seeing them at all this time but its still interesting to talk about..not everyone is bitching about it. Its just a surprise move, thats all. Pearl Jam is doing things differently, obviously. We're not all "fucking idiots" because we find it odd that they've changed their ways or that all the members in the band love to open with the same song 10+ shows in a row. Pendulum is my favorite tune on the album and I would love to see it as the opener...but im still surprised by it.Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -

It was a question about something pearl jam has never done. They have always mixed it up with their openers. There is nothing wrong with opening up a discussion with other fans that appreciate the suspense of a opener. Your sister not attending a concert has nothing to do with this topic."I wish I was a lucky man, well I guess that I am." EV

This thread is titled "Pendulum overkill". That infers a few things. 1. A criticism, not a question. 2. That all fans go to multiple shows. Also, plenty of the comments on the thread are not merely discussing the point, but criticizing the practice of opening with Pendulum. My story about my sister is just a story of how this mentality of bitching about everything the band does demonstrates how spoiled some of you are, so yes, it does apply to this topic. Opening up a discussion is different than bitching. The OP of this thread was clearly bitching.0 -

I actually quite agree with you! People bitch too much, and I don't mean that pertaining specifically to this thread. Many folks just simply take way too much for granted!
And I hope you consider taking your sister to a show sometime. I'll even paypal you money to buy her a beerMakes much more sense...

I've actually thought about that, but she and I have very different tastes in music. I would want her to come to a PJ show with me, but I don't think that would be her thing. She likes the country & western stuff. Although, I did go to the Jason Aldean show the night after Wrigley. It was tolerable.0 -
OH and for the record, I fucking LOVE Pendulum, loved it at the 3 shows I just saw and will be happy to see it in Vancouver and Seattle as well
Opener, Intro, whatever...call it whatever you want to, as long as they keep playin' it I will be happy!Makes much more sense...

I'm not the angry one, brother. I'd be happy if they opened with Row, Row, Row Your Boat every night if I was there to hear it. You and your friends here seem to be the ones who have to find reasons to whine about things the band is doing. Why not just be happy that you're alive and get to experience live performances by the greatest rock and roll band that will ever grace this planet? That's pretty cool, if you stop and think about it.0
