Thanks very much for this wonderful review !!You said it all!!
To the American calling this a "C setlist"? fuck off, we got Breakerfall, Sleight, Garden, Glorified G, Last exit, You Are and Little Wing, which don't exactly get played every night. still can^t get over the audience response... the crowd was ASTOUNDING. a bit rough in places, but overall excellent. Never seen Jeff so animated either... he was more dynamic than Mike.

Go was the perfect opener for the show... even before it began you could tell the crowd were going to be exuberant. I felt the floor move a lot. As usual Even Flow got a vigorous recpetion, Mike put a twist on the usual solo and Matt pulled off his Bonham tribute perfectly, but that wasn^t quite enough to divert attention from a young lady on somebodys shoulders with something (well, two somethings) to show everyone for the duration of the song. Glorified G was great to hear, as was Sleight of hand... Army Reserve sounds perfect next to it. Elderly woman got everyone singing along, as did Jeremy and I never imagined that I would live to hear ten thousand Swiss singing along to the fastpaced Satans Bed... a real treat. And to whoever said You Are was a "yuck" setcloser, maybe its one of those things you have to be part of to appreciate. The extended jam worked beautifully and the lightshow helped make it even more mesmerising.

When they came back out Ed asked if he could say something "in American" (fair share of boos, surprise surprise), and threw in the beautifully coined "Danke! Danke very much" which got some laughs too. Low light sent shivers down my spine, and Evolution-Alive got everyone jumping again. The second encore was a bit of a haze, Last Exit was superb, Ed was on absolute top form and screaming his lungs out with great effect, he ran up to the barrier to sing the last bridge of ritfw and naturally gave a few tambourines out. Ledbetter was tagged with the full version of Littke Wing, with vox and all. Mike owned the left side of the stage, came over a few times here and there. Stone was in full duckwalk mode, and still can't get over Jeff, throwing himself all over the place.

The first few rows were pretty hardcore I have to admit, and there was plenty of crowdsurfing too. But not violent or dangerous, it was people having a good time. Im so glad that the shows over here are GA, we get the privilege over the USA who get seats, Im damn thankful for that. Thats all there is to it. Overall a top show with an unusual but competent setlist, roaring crowd and the lads at their best. As Ed sang, "It's been six long years/never dreamed you'd return..." better not leave it so long next time. Keep on ritfw.

    Guetenächt and danke very much
    The waiting drove me mad!!!

What does everybody think about the sound at the Bern gig? It was better than I expected, considering that the Bern Arena is an ice hockey stadium, but of course still quite far away from perfect due to the reverberation mainly. I could hardly hear Eddie during "Go", but it got better quite fast and after a few songs, I could live with it.

    Hey Manu,

same oppinion, at the beginning I was like WTF? But they got it adjustet pretty quick.

I just saw your signature, seems like we had the same 2 experiences :)

Hopefully we can add another one soon!

I read that the Arena should get reconstructed soon? Is that right?
From the viewing I have never been at a better place!

What did Ed say... "Thanks for coming..."

    Man... We had to thank!!!!

That would be great indeed! Definitely one hell of a live band. I was 16 back in 2000 and Pearl Jam was actually my first "big" concert. Hope that we don't have to wait another 6 years now. :D

Cannot give you an answer I'm afraid, but I cannot find anything about that at http://www.bernarena.ch/ . However, there aren't many big concerts at the Bern Arena actually, most of the big ones here are at the Hallenstadion in Zurich.

Of course WE had to thank. No big show and blabla, just 2 hours pure energy and music, that's how I like it!

I don't think that the sound was bad because of the acoustics of the arena. I was pretty much in the same spot in Arnhem (2 or 3 meters away from the barrier in front of mike). The gelredome isn't known for his good acoustics aswell, but the sound at the front was nearly perfect. At Bern I couldn't hear Ed at all at first. It got better during the gig but even after like 10 songs the sound was still pretty bad.

Why was it bad then in your opinion?

I think that places like these don't have ideal acoustics. However, I want to stress that it did not affect the brilliance of the concert in any way!

Best sound I ever heard was Jethro Tull in a concert hall here in Lucerne. Man, that was perfect, never heard something like that before and probably never will again.

Well, I don't know it. Maybe the pa was set up wrong. What I'm trying to say is that even if the acoustics of the arena are bad, the sound at the front should still be better then it was.
You are right about the brilliance of the concert. It was really amazing.

Cannot judge that either, but there are certainly many aspects that can affect the sound quality, and these kinds of stadiums might be one. Anyway, I don't want to start a discussion about what could have been better, was just wondering what you guys think about it. ;)

girlfriend just read a review in a swiss paper and thought i`d share some things with you.
the band already had the italian leg of the gig arranged before the bern gig but had tried to book a couple of venues in zurich but they had been booked solid so the only place that was available was the bern arena.so in my opinion they took the arena as a last option otherwise there probably wouldnt have been a swiss gig at all.
As for the PA being set up wrong. Not a chance.
the acoustics in the hall were not built for rock concerts.period.
the review touched on this fact that at times the sound had more clarity than at other times.
i dont have a copy but i will try to find one tomorrow and scan it to anyone who is interested.
    cheers..

I think the concert was great! Okay the sound might bot have been the best, but it was my first PJ gig so yes..I'm happy. espcially cause I got Stones guitar pick!

Otherwise, great show! Loved it too death!

Acoustics, you guys ever think that the constant noise of the crowd could have drowned the acoustics? I mean they hardly shut up... even during betterman they/we were loud ;)

It had nothing to do with the loud crowd. The soundmix just wasn't good.

Bern was my first show ever, after fourteen years of knowing this
band, getting all excited when a new record is coming out, pulling
my hair out when I was in Chile and Pearl Jam was playing in
Zurich, wanting to hit the wall when I left Chile back to
Switzerland... two days before the concert in Santiago... and
then... finally I got to see them live. No words to explain what a
experience this has been. Starting with meeting the ten club fans
on the waiting row, amazing people. Great vibes, everything felt
just right. Then the concert? Lights go off, heart is pumping out,
finals exams are peanuts compare to this. Here we go. I don't care
if they play Evenflow everytime, or if the sound was not perfect
or the opening song should have been this or the other. I've never
felt so complete in my life. I was there, first row (thank u 4ever
Alex!), getting pushed and squeezed, so what? Ed was drowned in
the flu and even like that he was able giving it all, smiling and
bringing a hell of a concert. The most impressive thing is this
hypnotic electricity that was made in there, flowing between the
crowd and the band. I've been in other concerts, and the intensity
in here was way beyond anything I have felted or seen before. All
I could do after the concert is go home, check for tickets to
Italy, pack pass and toothbrush and leave at 5 am for Bologna, in
the hope that there will be still enough tickets.

    And there was!!!

I think the set is great.

    *shrugs*

I thought it was great too. But then, I'd love watching them play my least favourite songs.. I just love watching them play :)

My only complaint was the sound. But I think that was more to do with where I was stood. I could only really hear Mike.

    Bern is a awesome place.

It was well worth the flight and everything, I am 16 and this is the 3rd show I have been too. I think it was the best. No one has mention the awesome pyro. The lighting was brililant, especially when the light was reflected of the mirror ball and such. IT wasn't like that at the Astoria or Reading.

The Venue kicked assss, I got a perfect, uninterrupted view standing in a seating tier. As im small and the arena was awesome, the guy was massive infront and i could still see fine.

I loved Keep on rockin' , that was the shit. Garden, glorified G were sweet.

Here are all my pics. I took quite a few but i have narrowed em down to the best ;p
