Are more than 2 shows necessary on this tour?

Pearl Jam could play the same set every single night and I'd still go to as many shows as I could afford. This year I've got four or five, depending on work; as long as I love seeing the band and they keep playing killer shows, the potential of a bit of setlist repetition isn't going to keep me away.Minneapolis 1998 | Jones Beach I & II, Montreal, and Toronto 2000 | Buffalo, State College, Toronto, Montreal and Hershey 2003 | Boston I & II 2004 | Thunder Bay, Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto 2005 | Toronto I & II 2006 | The Vic and Lollapalooza 2007 | Calgary and Toronto 2009 | PJ20 I & II, Toronto I & II, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton 2011 | London, Chicago, Spokane, Calgary, Vancouver and Seattle 2013 | Ottawa and Toronto I & II 2016 | Chicago I & II 2018 | Ottawa, Hamilton and Toronto 2022 | Philadelphia I & II 20240

66 songs total, 56 different songs played, only 10 repeats

Porch
Alive

AND....
6 songs from Lightning Bolt which you have to expect because its a new album
Haha I was just about to find this stat and post it. No band on the planet does this. And for the sake of argument lets say another band does it (which they don't), they don't do it on a new album tour. There is plenty of mix outside of the new album.2008 - 6/28, 6/30

Woah is this thread for real? Someone pass me the crack pipe please! I actually had to check to make sure someone didn't resurrect a thread from 2009 or 2010. These shows are insane, they are playing as if it's the same audience every night. If tickets were 50 bucks and I could teleport to the shows for free I would go to every single one this year.0

Other bands do.
You can see Phish on a new album tour, see 2 consecutive shows and odds are you won't see a single repeat.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

Because their songs are each 20 minutes long. Their setlist consist of like 14 songs for a show.0

Will you still be glad you only saw those 3-4 shows 15 years ago?
Or
Will you be upset that you can never experience a live show by the greatest Rock and Roll band ever again?
Perhaps some introspective thought is in order for all who have grown weary of these types of shows?
Maybe it is just me... But the lamest crowd at the greatest of greatest hits shows is better then trying to remember what they use to sound like.
Enjoy it while you can, nothing lasts forever.
This x10000!
That's why I do so many shows. Having lost quite a few people close to me, I learned the hard way that you never know what tomorrow brings.
A prime example would be, the 9 fans who lost their lives. If pearl jam decided to quit playing then, I would have totally understood, but would have missed out on all these amazing experiences.
A short story I've told before... I was at the doctors office with my girlfriend who was having chemo treatments. On the news comes a story about Jeff being mugged in Atlanta. This was on CNN. When I saw this, I initially thought the story said Jeff had died. It was only a few seconds but it was in those few seconds that I decided and realized, this could end in an instant any day.
That tought me to truly appreciate every show, and to make sure I didn't miss any shows I wanted to be part of ever again. Since then I have done just that. I let go of every petty thing, and from my signature, you can see I have done every show I have wanted to since.
I don't care what they play. I don't care what they say. I don't care if I get ten new songs or hear songs I've heard (literarly) over 25 times. I go to the show because of the feeling I get hearing the music. It's the greatest feeling in the world to me. Not everyone is the same but, that's just me.
Maybe stop and reflect about the fact that you just saw arguably the best band in history. Just be glad they finally played a show in your area. It seems to be about 4-5 years between shows in the US as it is.
Just be greatful for what you have. It will hurt alot more when it suddenly goes away if you don't.
I learned that the very hard way.
Hopefully you won't have to also.Post edited by smanchac1 on0 -

I think the majority of us forget to simply enjoy the music and not take it for granted. We too often do. This board needs more posts like this. I was thinking the last few days what a great show actually means, and I believe certain factors go into that, but at the very end you have to be able to say what matters is that you were actually there to witness the music first hand that means so much to you (much like you said).2008: Bonnaroo

You've obviously never seen them. This is the typical response (I know you are just kidding around) from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.
At any given show you MAY get a 20 minute jam....2 at most. You'll probably average 20+ songs.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

What do you guys think?
To me it sounds like you are trying to justify something, but I can't tell what exactly it is...because you are going to 4 more shows.
To say they are not switching up the setlists enough and the shows are becoming predictable...are you sure we're talking about the same band? I've been to 4 shows this tour and I have one more tomorrow. The other day while at work I threw the setlists of my 4 shows into a database and did some SQL queries against it. Here is what I came up with:
4 shows
127 total songs
75 distinct songs
6 songs played at all 4 shows
5 songs played at 3 shows
40 songs played at only 1 show.
So really...I have no idea what you are talking about. They are changing things up more than they have in like a decade.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

So I have to disagree!
I think that stat speaks for it self.
and in Brooklyn as pointed out earlier had 66 songs played 56 unique songs.
very strange when peoples perceptions are so far from reality.
The numbers don't lie. I went to BK1,2 and Philly 1,2 and I was blown away with the setlists and diversity. These are some of the best setlists I've ever seen. I thought this thread was meant to be sarcastic at first.
I was at all four as well and to put it in to perspective, by night 4 (Philly 2), they played TEN songs that hadn't been played during the prior three. That, quite frankly, is amazing.0 -
Leaving Philly 2, my third show in a row, I thought to myself that two shows on this tour would have been enough for me. Same opener every night with a couple slower songs after it. MYM, Lightning Bolt, Infallible, Yellow Moon, Porch, Alive all being played in nearly the same set spot every night. Same schtick with the lights during Porch every night. I'm not saying this is a necessarily bad thing, its just much more predictable than in years past. That being said, I've got tickets to Hartford and Baltimore and I hope they come out and prove me wrong. I hope I get to hear Getaway, My Father's Son, and Swallowed Whole (my favorite songs from the album). I guess how many shows is good for you depends on whether you want to see a lot of the same stuff every night, in order to see the more rare stuff being mixed in. Personal preference for sure.9/13/98, 10/4/00, 4/29/03, 6/29/03, 7/2/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 9/15/05, 9/16/05, 5/12/06, 5/13/06, 6/27/08, 6/28/08, 6/30/08, 10/30/09, 10/31/09, 5/15/10, 9/11/11, 9/12/11, 10/19/13, 10/21/13, 10/22/13, 10/25/13, 10/27/13, 9/26/15, 4/28/16, 4/29/16, 8/5/16, 8/7/16, 8/13/18, 9/2/18, 9/4/18, 9/26/21, 9/1/22, 9/2/22, 9/14/22, 9/18/23, 9/19/23, 9/7/24, 9/9/24, 9/12/24, 9/15/24, 9/17/24, 5/16/25, 5/18/250

Went to Brooklyn 2, Philly 1, and Philly 2.
I am done for this tour. 3 shows in 4 nights is now just too much. Did the 4 Spectrum shows in 09 and it wasn't that bad (could be just getting old).
I thought the first two shows were just incredible, two of the best I had ever been to (been to over 40).
I was pumped for Tuesday but honestly was just annoyed by the 5th song as it appeared it was the same set list as Saturday. It was at that point where I thought that maybe 2 was enough. My expectations were too high after the last couple shows and I had my fill for this tour.0 -
I've seen 4 on this tour so far, and I am happy we still have one more to go to. The four that I have seen were all wonderful in their own right. We had GA for both Philly nights and seats in different locations for Pitt and Buff. My fave show so far was Philly 1. We were well rested, and didn't have to leave the city the next day. We went on our own, met people at the preparty and just had a blast at this amazing show. Having night 2 right on the next day ways cool because I was still so full of all the amazement from night one that I wanted to do it again as soon as possible
To me, they didn't disappoint one single minute.
If you are bored at the shows and stuff like repeated songs bother you you maybe need a show break, just to freshen things up a bit.
My show count is 14 right now and I am ready for more...
I cannot wait to see them again in December, and I wish we would be able to afford even more shows ... But I am thankful and overjoyed with everything I have experienced so far - they are on FIREPlease, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue!http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/148993/please-pearl-jam-consider-a-vinyl-benaroya-hall-re-issue0 -
What I did not mean to do is upset people because I know we all take this stuff pretty seriously when anyone says anything negative about PJ. I fall into that this same category and always defend them. I feel bad even posting this to begin with and regret ever doing it.
I am not saying the shows weren't awesome, they always are and I always have an amazing time. I also recognize that very few other bands play such long sets and vary it so much.
Maybe these numbers say it better-Philly 1 and Philly 2 had 64 total songs with 11 repeats for a total of 53 unique songs. This is really good. But when I throw Pittsburgh into that mix I only have 8 more new songs out of the 31 played. My numbers may not be correct but I don't think they are that far off. Anyway, the exact numbers don't matter. You all are right, no other band is anywhere near this good.0 -
there does seem to be a mentality that some folk have to do every show.....
its all personal however and the only answer is 'do as many as you will enjoy'
if you find yourself at a show and going through the motions, you'll surely realise that is the one too many0 -

I think there is a bigger problem when you feel bad for stating an opinion (wasn't even really inflammatory).
Found nothing wrong with what you said and had similar feelings.0 -

Great point!
I think the expectation kind of works against you in some circumstances when you go to a lot of shows. You wonder if this is going to be night they do something extra special and if it doesn't quite live up to that expectation, you almost feel slighted.
Mind you, this is not anyones fault but your own as nobody is forcing you to go to multiple shows. It is just that implied expectation that every show is different that makes you not want to miss attending for fear that you will miss that special moment.0 -
what's necessary or not depends on what you want. if you enjoy it, go for it. if not, do less shows. I'll be doing 9 shows, and I'm very sure I'd have fun doing 9 more. I just love every aspect of it, the traveling, meeting new people, road trips with friends.
and setlist complaining about PJ is bitching at a very high level in any case. a lot of bands have the same setlist for many if not all shows of their tour - see the foos, who I love dearly and who are an excellent live act, but after hearing the same 4 opening songs at about 5 shows I've decided 2 a tour is enough for me there. unless it's a small club show, where they might actually play something else.0
