Are more than 2 shows necessary on this tour?

Hello fellow PJ fans! I am one of the guys who reads a lot of what goes on here but has never posted before. After being at Philly 1 and 2, I wanted to throw something out there and see what you guys think. I am sure I will immediately get bashed by a lot of people but I really don't mean this in an insulting way and am hoping that you can help me feel differently about this year's tour.

I have been to London, Pittsburgh, and Philly 1&2 this year and can't help but feel I don't need to go to any more shows on this tour. I was at both Philly shows and was disappointed that the band played so many of the same songs between the two nights. This seems to be so contrary to how they usually do back to back nights doesn't it? These two shows however, can't be the judge of an entire tour right? What I can't help but think about is how similar all of the band's "core" songs have become on this tour so far. It seems like if I chose any show and sprinkle in a rarity or two, I can pretty much predict the set. I don't remember the band being like this even a few years back. Am I wrong?

I had a great time at the shows and have tickets for four more shows on leg 2. I can't help but wonder if I will miss anything by not going? I have never felt like this before and can't shake it.

What do you guys think?

I am at the point now where I appreciate the hits almost just as much as the rarity so I think two is preferred (hard to say necessary when its just a concert). I was so happy to make 4 shows and looking forward to my fifth and final on friday

20 new songs for me this tour . I would have been bummed to miss the stuff in Philly if I did not travel.

2 shows exactly for me this tour.

It def does seem that there are many similarities to shows this tour, with each song maybe bearing a new song or two from the previous stops.

I say 2 is fine. Brooklyn shows were a bunch of repeats 2
  • Thanks for the honest responses. I do appreciate the hits but I also liked the way they would mix them up from night to night. For example, if you always want to play even flow and alive, I am ok with that but to repeat the same hits night after night seems a little weird. They used to mix it up a little more but lately haven't at all.

They also used to only play a rarity once or twice and move to new ones but now they seem to play the same rarities (come back, parachutes, blood, etc). All of the songs I consider rarities I actually heard twice which made it less fun.

I just wonder if this is a slump or if this is the PJ of the future? I am wrong or is this a complete rotation of the way things used to be?

Personally, I think the band is very proud of the new album. More so than the past couple. I think they like playing the new ones live. Next year's shows will be more "wide open".

I'm not a big fan of the pattern we've been in since '09....the slow encore start. It's just too predictable.

 damn, reading that last line...we are a picky bunch aren't we?

    2 Brooklyn show:

66 songs total, 56 different songs played, only 10 repeats

    (concert staples)
    Do the Evolution
    Porch
    Alive
    Given to Fly

    AND....

6 songs from Lightning Bolt which you have to expect because its a new album

    2 is usually my max.

It has to do with $$$

    1. It's expensive to go to multiple shows
    2. Seeing the crazy merch lines, stalker fans, people breaking promises with one another. I can do without all that.

It's similar to Vegas. It's all fun and a good time, but anymore than two days of it is overkill for your mental well being.

I agree about the concert staples, but we didn't get GTF in Worcester 1. I just love that song live. The others as well are always good to hear, although I could do without Alive every time.

2 is too little, 25 is not enough. If you can afford it and have the time, as many as possible. If you can only do 1 or 2 then that's fine, too.

There is no rule saying you have to go to a ton of shows. I personally think that if I went to more than 4 or so during a tour I'd kind of ruin it for myself. As it is, I'm only going to 1 (or a very slight chance of 2).

i saw london ,pitt and buff and that seems to be enough. i have said already that there is a group of songs they play plus some others . i love the band but i don't like the same songs every night. they are still better than most as all other bands play the same songs every night. but those three may be enough for me. too many hits played.

  • I've actually begun rethinking my own concert attending habits. Over the past three or four years, whenever I've seen multiple shows in a week, it seems like the first one rules, but I'm not as into the second one. I attended all four Spectrum shows in 2009 and it was like a sensory overload. Way too much. In 2010, I caught Virginia on May 10th and then MSG on May 21st and the 11 days between shows was awesome. MSG seemed like I hadn't seen them in a while...like it was a whole new tour. But Brooklyn on Saturday and Philly on Tuesday this year....I dunno...I just wasn't too into Philly for some reason. Maybe at this point, being older and having seen them a bunch of times, less can be more for me. I saw five shows in 2003, 4 in 2006, and four in 2008.....and it didn't seem like enough. This year, two seemed like plenty.

I'm very much looking forward to going to twice as many shows as "necessary" come November.

  • I agree, i feel the set-lists have been similar. Yes, they change a few songs out. I understand they're trying to keep everyone happy. I'm amazed they haven't played getaway. I think its the best song on LB. I also don't understand why they keep opening up with pendulum.

Yeah, well them opening with Pendulum every single night is really fucking me up in the PJ fantasy tour, so I really wish they would stop that.

  • It seems like everyone feels the same as me but maybe I have been going to too many. I have only been going to shows for 5 years but when I look back at old tours, it seems different? Is it just me?

Now, I only wish there was a way to donate 10c tix to someone who could use them. There is no way to get my tix into the wishlist foundation or something right?

Thanks guys for the responses and advice.
