New York City police continue to hunt for as many as 30 motorcyclists who forced a driver on a harrowing high-speed chase through Upper Manhattan and then beat him in front of his wife and 2-year-old daughter.

The six-minute pursuit on Sunday — which was captured on video and posted on YouTube — began when the driver of a black Range Rover called 911 to report erratic bikers taking part in an unauthorized rally dubbed Hollywood Stuntz, police told NBC New York.

New York police commissioner Ray Kelly says the department is investigating whether a motorcycle group attacked an SUV driver who broke the leg of a cyclist.

The video shows the motorcycles converged on the 33-year-old man's vehicle on the West Side Highway in Harlem, and he apparently clipped a bike that cut closely in front of him.

The motorcycle rider suffered a broken leg, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. Some of the other bikers then surrounded the SUV.

"They take their helmets and start to dent his car, and apparently his tires are slashed there with a knife," Kelly said.

The video, shot with a helmet-mounted camera, shows the driver then took off, knocking down more bikes as others tore up the highway after him.

During a 50-block chase, the bikers managed to trap the Range Rover again, and one of them got off and pulled open the driver's side door before the motorist swerved and sped away.

After his tires finally went flat on a side street, the group blocked him in again. One biker was seen yanking off his helmet and using it to smash in the SUV window.

Police said the man suffered black eyes and other injuries in the subsequent beating. After receiving some stitches, he was released from Columbia University Medical Center.

No arrests have been made, but police are examining surveillance video from a nearby gas station where some of the motorcyclists stopped.

Kelly said the bikers did not have a permit for the rally and the NYPD only learned of the show-boating event — in its second year — through social media.

He said police had fanned out around Manhattan to watch for trouble, arresting 15 bikers and confiscating 55 motorcycles unrelated to the attack on the Range Rover.

Playing Grand Theft Auto 5 over the weekend has desensitized me from this type of human behavior. ;)

well ... based on my experience ... i would say it was the range rover's experience ... having spent a lot of time in the NY metro area ... i'm biased against guys who drive fancy suvs ... they are always the ones who leave traffic and go into merge lanes and do asshole things on the road ... i mean ... you hit a biker who's legs are broken and you don't bother to get out to see if he's ok? ... yeah - it's intimidating but it's no excuse to then ride through a bunch of other bikers ...

I just saw this on the news. looks to me like the driver of the suv panicked when the bikers were getting off their bike to check on the guy who got hit. I don't condone them beating him, but I understand.

You should watch the video. That's not how it went down.

I would have done exactly what this driver did.

It is unclear if they started to attack the car the first time it stopped or not. The article suggests he drove off because they were hitting his car, but you can't see that on the video.

Looks to me like the bikers got way too close to him and caused the accident, so that was wrong, but then if he didn't get out and help he was in the wrong for that too unless his car was already being attacked, in which case I can understand him taking off.

The video doesn't show the entire series of events, so it's impossible to know exactly what set off the "group/gang" of sportbikers. The article makes it sound like SUV accidentally clipped one of the cyclists, who were performing illegal stunts in the road. At some point down the road further, the group/gang then boxed in the SUV and forced him to stop in the middle of the highway. SUV driver, who has his wife and child in the car with him, panics and drives through the group of sportbikers, hitting and/or running over a couple of them (hard to tell exactly how many were hit). Sportbikers give chase, eventually catch the SUV in traffic and bash in his window. You don't see it in the vid, but the article says they managed to get the guy out of the car and beat him down.

It seems extreme, especially after watching that SUV run over those bikes, but it's hard to fault the SUV driver. If I'm surrounded by what looks like an angry mob of dudes like that and I've got my family in the car with me? All bets are off.

edit: this is coming from a guy who has owned and ridden sportbikes for most of the last 10 years, if that matters.

I think this sums it up pretty well -- if you hit a motorcyclist, you should fucking stop and help. However, if the people that the biker you hit is with is mobbing up and angry...AND you've got a wife and child with you, gtfo of there.

i read the story earlier today and they were saying the guy was talking shit to one of the riders ... honestly, i'm not sure what went down and there is a lot of fault to go around ... all i'm saying is my experience with a lot of these guys that drive fancy suvs is they are genuinely pricks ... obviously, it's a huge generalization and this guy may not be ... it just wouldn't surprise me that he contributed to this and then he made a bad situation worse ... he should have been on the phone talking to cops right from the get go ...

Wouldn't you panic if you had your 2 year old daughter in the car and an gang of bikers surrounded you?

    I would.

Where are the cops? If you watch the video these guys are speeding along the highway for miles and there's no police to stop the chase, monitor this huge gang of motorcycles, or keep the roads safe.

is there a history of bikers like this randomly assaulting families in the middle of the day on the highway?

From what I have read this "gang" of motorcycles had surrounded and harassed many drivers on the road that day.

In the video one of the bikers clearly looks back and brakes right in front of the SUV. Looks like he wanted to make contact on purpose. Then it's clear the driver stops, then from what the driver says his vehicle was assaulted (not clear in the video).

You bet I would take off if I had my family in the car.

It is tough to tell from the video what exactly went down initially, but That SUV takes off and grinds over the top of several bikes... and who knows if there were people under his SUV! He's lucky he didnt kill someone. But I do get his panic and get-the-fuck-out mentality with his wife and kid in the car. Its just a crazy situation all the way around..

The guy on the motorcycle that the SUV initially hits looks like he was trying to get hit though.

At the same time, those bikers should never have attacked him. I'm betting some of those guys will be arrested.

Kind of tough to make a call on what went down. Looks like a biker intentionally stopped short in front of the SUV (and no judgments on the guy w/ family for driving one; it strikes me as irrelevant here) and the SUV driver tried to get the fuck out of there.

Who knows what preceded this? Maybe he was the asshole. Maybe there were many assholes.

...and for the record, I know some fine folks who ride, as well as those who own them dreaded SUVs ;)

As do I. Besides, we all know the most reckless and dangerous group on the roads today are the bicyclists. :D

Land Rover should use that footage in their next commercial. To heck with climbing up rocky mountains, this thing can run over motorcycles if you find yourself in a pinch!
