The reason that they travel with security and bodyguards is because Ed has had serious stalker problems in the past (that lady who threatened his life, broke into his house and even crashed her car into the wall of his house that one time, among others), and Jeff recently got attacked as he was leaving the studio.

I shook his hand after the soundcheck in Cardiff 2000.
Wish this had been me but during the Vandals support in Dublin 2000, my brother and mates were watching within the pit area. A guy with a hoodie up walks up and stands beside them. It was Eddie. He asked them not to make a scene but was happy to talk with them for a bit. Took a request and during the show he dedicated Off He Goes & Small Town to the people from Donegal.Kearnsy0 -

Bothering someone while they're eating is incredibly rude. I spent all of Smoosh's set at Lolla '07 standing beside Matt Cameron. Matt Cameron is actually my idol...and he was with his family, and there was absolutely no way I was going to say anything to him.
I realize the members of Pearl Jam are just people and not gods...but shit: I want my rock stars to be gods. I don't want them to be real people. I don't want to shake Eddie's hand and realize that he's just like me. I want to keep that barrier up. If Quadrophenia taught me nothing else, it taught me never to get too close to my idols because they're bound to let me down...even if they're only letting my down by being real people.Minneapolis 1998 | Jones Beach I & II, Montreal, and Toronto 2000 | Buffalo, State College, Toronto, Montreal and Hershey 2003 | Boston I & II 2004 | Thunder Bay, Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto 2005 | Toronto I & II 2006 | The Vic and Lollapalooza 2007 | Calgary and Toronto 2009 | PJ20 I & II, Toronto I & II, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton 2011 | London, Chicago, Spokane, Calgary, Vancouver and Seattle 2013 | Ottawa and Toronto I & II 2016 | Chicago I & II 2018 | Ottawa, Hamilton and Toronto 2022 | Philadelphia I & II 20240 -
I think that the reality is...if you are staring all crazy eyed at the guys, well...its going to start things off on the wrong foot. (Not that the OP was doing this...).
These guys are just people, albeit with a fair amount of status behind them ;-) To say they are the same as us? Well...not really...but there's no reason to be anyone but yourself if and when you have that chance encounter. Both times I have met or encountered the band, it has been incredibly positive. That said, the second time I was within an arms hair of Vedder and just let him be for the most part as it was fairly obvious he wasn't hoping and wishing for me to tug on his arm and chat about life. And believe me, it wasn't easy as I know those chances are few and far between.0 -

Yep, the only time I've had the chance to walk up to a band member, Mike and Jeff were talking with people. I'm never going to interrupt a conversation. And I wasn't going to stand around like a stalker waiting for the conversation to end so I didn't get to say anything to Mike, but Jeff did look over at me so I said a quick "thanks for the show" and kept walking by.0 -

I saw Ed a couple times backstage at the Missoula show. We were walking by the backstage area and he was walking and talking with his friends. I said "hi, hope you have a great show" and he waved a thanks at me. Second time I saw him that afternoon I gave him the Shaka sign and he returned it. That was it, I left him alone. He seems like a nice dude in person.
I thought it was funny that in Missoula you could walk right backstage if you wanted. There was an opening in the fence by the stairs. I saw their dressing room and the stage being setup a few hours before the show. Was interesting.
I hope to be backstage at the Calgary show to have a beer with them.

I've met Ed a couple times and just like everyone says he is super cool and genuine. I've also talked to Jeff and he was super chill and awesome. When my wife and I had just started dating, she was a newbie and the first album I played for her was No Code and after hearing Lukin she wanted to know the name of the song so I told her and she said that it'd be a cool name for a kid.
I think I blurted out, "I Love you... I mean... Cool." Seven years later, we named our son Lukin and it suits our rockstar toddler well.
He loves Pearl Jam just like his parents! Whenever he's throwing down, 95% of the time if we throw on some acoustic of the boys he'll pop his thumb in his mouth and just chill.
Oh, and for DTE he always yells, LOUDER!0 -

Yeah... being in L.A. and going to a lot of local Queens and Foo Fighters goings ons, I've met them a few times... mostly, Josh. The best times were when he popped by to catch a Foo Fighters related gigs because he doesn't have to play onstage and can relax and enjoy. He's pretty funny and is pretty cool with the fans... but, he doesn't seem to like to sign shit... especially those Stratocaster guitar pickguards that will find their way on to a 99 dollar Squire and end up on E-Bay for 500 bucks. Alain Johannes.. I can't say enough nice things about this guy. Really, a nice person.
I've met the various Foo Fighters, too. Those guys love to play side gigs in little dumpy bars. Dave rarely shows up any more because he is too much of a distraction from his band mate on stage. I was able to buy him (and his then, future wife) a beer/wine at some divey bar on Hollywood Blvd. that usually hosts Tejano music. Chris was playing there with his 'Jackson' band. I love the Foo Fighters and them and their crew being really nice people, helps. Chris is a really good guy and has always treated the fans well.
The Pearl Jam guys are cool... but, i have to admit, i understand why Eddie sometimes shuns the crowds. I've seen some pretty odd behaviour from some fans. I didn't think Jeff was unapproachable... he just doesn't like to sign shit because of all of those E-Bay types out there. I suppose a lot had to do with the fact that we were in a cool record store and he was looking at all the cool stuff they had. Stone is cool... seen him be a bit scarcastic with fans... but, in his defense, some of the fans say some really weird and kooky things to him. Matt is also cool, but I get the feeling that he just wants to get in and get out as fast a possible. Mike is the coolest of the cool. Always nice to every, even those E-Bay seller types that have 20 things for him to sign.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Awesome
I always wonder how people magically have a LP copy or a book or whatever with them when they bump into the band "by accident" People are weird. I would probably be like StoneThank god I'm not a celebrity. I would hate it.
