Question for aussies - never been to Australia (have seen PJ in NZ) and thinking of hitting melbourne and sydney shows and from there have 2 options - either go to Adelaide for the show and check out that city or go anywhere else in Australia for like 3 nights with Cairns area being the front runner. Honestly, if you are going to 3 shows ... isn't that enough? Adelaide is a shithole. If you are going Melbourne/Sydney and have limited time, I would stick to the east coast. Whether that be up Cairns way like you are thinking, or closer to Sydney (e.g. northern NSW, places like Byron Bay).

For 2 people! Now I see why you booked so quick! I plan on doing Auckland-Sydney shows. I got nothin against Perth or Adelaide but I gotta get back home as early that week as possible. I haven't decided if I'll do both nights in Sydney or not.

I've seen PJ in Australia and a few places in Europe in the last few years and IMHO they always save the best sets for Adelaide. That's coming from a melburnian.
It's far less than an hour from the city to homebush by train. Direct services to Olympic park will be running on the day. Central, Redfern, Strathfield, olympic park. About 20-25 minutes

Is the presale really even necessary for Auckland? I read they sold out Mt Smart in 2009 but since there seems to be a lot of hate for BDO and it's in a big park I am wondering if I need to commit just yet?

I'll be moving from NYC to Brisbane the month before, so this works perfectly! 4-5 shows in NYC and Philly, then Gold Coast as my welcome to Australia.
