I really can't imagine a Pearl jam show - other than an acoustic set - were the crowd all sit down. That's just weird!
  • And to think they skipped the south for this! HAHAHAHAH

Oh I agree with your first paragraph. In response to your second, I was referring to those on the thread who were saying stuff like ‘if it were in the States or in Europe it would have been so much better’. I’m sure those there enjoyed it and if they didn’t there’s no need to rub salt in their wounds.

Sorry, now, I know what you mean...boasting that can diminish the celebration of those that were able to enjoy the shows... I thought it was a more generalized statement. (We Americans have been hit with lots of those lately - and definately encountered it while traveling in Europe -it is such a drag) But all the Pearl Jam fans we met were very cool - united in a common love for PJ music.

  • I'd hate to see this turn into a fan competition though or for us to start sounding like the Americans 'oh we're the best blah blah blah'. I'm just sad for all the genuine fans who were there for it and who had waited for that one night... actually no, I'm not, they got to see PJ last night fuck them.

Ow..I didn't mean it that way.
I just wanted to say that I'm proud of European fans and our "performance". :D
And about those so called genuine fans...if they're genuine they must have had a great time...

  • This all seems like a big overeaction to me. i doubt the crowd was that bad, and from footage ive seen and from people who were there and have settled down it doesnt sound like the major problem some of our overseas friends seem to think. It also doesn't seem like the band were angry or anything, the jabs at the crowd were more of the 'making fun' type, and an example of ed's cheeky, sly humour.

Agreed ... Ed always says what's on his mind, especially after a few bevvies. Enjoy the Melbourne shows.

I was like that at Sydney 1. I was the only person who knew every word to Gone and got some strange looks when in the encore break I yelled out Come Back a few times.. The guy in front said "yeah, don't worry they'll be back. I laughed at him and said "I meant the song actually".
are you fucking serious(about the come back part)?????????????
WTF was that guy doing at that concert anyway????????????????????????

I thought the show was great, I loved the set list. I was on the floor, towards the back. No-one around us sat down the whole concert. People were sitting down on the elevated levels at various points in the evening, but considering the age and amount some of them get out to see bands, I was surprised how many were standing up on the elevated levels! I will ONLY buy floor tickets because regardless of the band, once you are off the floor, you are in the realm of the sit down and watch concert goer, or the industry guestlist too cool to stand up section, which then just seems to spread the sit down and watch vibe.

I thought the band did pull back into themselves a bit, the little knot on stage around the drum kit didn't move too much once they withdrew to that position, BUT it wasn't a bad thing, I thought it was incredibly powerful, very very controlled on stage, and combined with the set list, I LOVED it. It was actually very similar feel to the first time they played Sydney, that was seated floor at the Ent Cent and they let the first 8 or so rows surge forward in between the stage and the seats and security kept the ones further back, back in their seats, very strange having all the 8 or so empty rows then frustrated people trying to sneak past security, that put a dmaper on those shows.

Security on the floor WAS tight. I had a seat next to the inside aisle. They had fluro pink tape down the entire length of the aisle. If you put so much as a toe over that tape, security was there pushing you back behind the pink tape. Maybe the first Sydney show they weren't quite as pushy and for some reason they upped the crowd control the second night. It was quite oppressive standing on the edge of aisle, even if you weren't edging over the pink tape, someone in a row in front was, and the security guys were always stalking past ready to move people back behind their seat. The comment about maybe security is tight making contributing to it being like playing to a church didn't help - it made more people edge over the tape and security got even tenser around where I was.

    On a side note....

What was the mini song before Elderly Woman? The setlist has it as (A Sort Of Homecoming) I know it but couldn't place it (argh I'm sounding like an elderly woman...) I even knew the words enough to recognise them.
  • The outsiders looking in are getting the impression that the whole crowd was dead, it wasn't. Everyone around me was into it (on the floor, rows 7-10).
I dont know what happened up front, but my friend up there said some people in front row were falling asleep, must have been promoters friends. Thats disgusting. There are people who would die for those seats and they get given to uninterested people.

Sydney 3 is going to have to be something special or PJ are not going to be enthused on ever coming back to Sydney.

And someone needs to make the band aware of the ticketing situation, over zealous security and promoter handouts up front to non-fans. I realise they cant do alot about it now, but surely they need to know, if they dont already. I know whats its like to attend a concert with tight security (Vegas 2000 comes to mind) and it sucks so i feel sorry for those people on the aisles. You cant relax and enjoy when you feel someone is watching your every move.

Ed tells us to move around, but security say no. What we need is a rather large group to take action and i hate to say it, break some rules here. If one or 2 people do it, security steps in, but what can they do if 20, 50 or 100 people say screw the seats, I want to move around. Are PJ going to stop playing because we are following their orders and actually having fun? I dont think so.

Im not trying to start something here, but it's food for thought..
  • no you're right. it just feels like we are getting our hands tied regarding this whole tour. it's great that fans are still so passionate and we overcome it all and still have a great time, but srsly.

I agree. Let's all stand on our seats on November 18 and scream "fuck you, we're not gonna take it anymore".. then dance on our seats all night.

Fore a start, they could ditch Coppel for the next tour, bring back 10c for every show, and have a half decent system to announce the shows.

  • all reports the crowd in brisbane tonight was great and the band were pumped. 10c shows really make a difference.
  • certainly does. ill be at brisbane2 so i dont wanna curse it yet but yeah there are no 10C seats for brisbane2.

3 sold out shows in Sydney (each one 18,000 seats)...and two in every other major city...

I don't think you could get that in North Carolina...that's why they're here!

And fourth, review security. Despite what anyone says, security played a BIG part in dampening the crowds spirits at sydney 2. Sure they didnt make people sit down, but those that wanted to go nuts werent allowed to.

Sorry but people saying that Sydney dont deserve PJ, get off your high horse, especially if you weren't at this show. There were certainly many many people totally into it, obviously everyone including the band are focussing on the negatives.

As for Ed comparing sydney 2 to the Bris 1 crowd, thats a little rough. 10c vs no-10c, who do you think will win almost every time?

Its a shame people are focussing so much on the negative aspect of Sydney 2. It was an amazing setlist and the people that were into it, were really into it.
And are you all forgetting Sydney 1?? Possibly one of the best PJ shows in Australia EVER. But that's not important is it.........

and walkthamile, its 3 sold out in melbourne, 2 1/2 in sydney (not that Im ever one to jump to melbourne's defence, but facts are facts).

If PJ want to test the faith of Australian fans, give us a fan club only show. I can assure you they wouldn't be complaining about the crowd there.

I don't know much about Australia, but from what I know Melbourne's the place where the music/underground/art scene is, and so my guess is that Melbourne will be the place on this tour of Oz. Just wish I was there. Nice weather, and Pearl Jam. Sounds like a winning combo.
  • I was at the 2nd sydney concert (ROCKED HARD), floor seats and would love to try and justify said "churchlike" behavior. I was sitting on the front of a section and was told by security numerous times not to go acroos a pink line of tape on the floor and was threatened with expultion from an event i wait years for! there was no less than 6 security muppets within 2 metres of me, and i couldnt risk being thrown out! my love and admiration for pearl jam knows few boundaries, but its hard to go "nuts" with security constently on your case!
If i behave can u arrange a hole in the ground? somewhere nice, make it nice, where the land meets high tide.

and as far as all this bullshit whinging about sydney 2, imover it....i was there, and i had a great time, thats all i care about.......

if PJ really wanna get people jumping around, heres a clue...dont turn the fucken house lights on when theres 3 songs or so left...that dampened things for me.....the house lights should only go on right at the very end, as a sign for ppl to leave....its hard to rock out with the lights on

  • Ive never been a fan of the house lights on during any songs. But they've been doing it for years.
I think they should leave lights off for the whole show.

I love a chance to see what the place is like with people jumping up and down. I'm sure the band feels the same, the reason why they turn them on so they can get a good look.
