I don't think the Aussies deserve a return after the slap in the face they gave the band. However, they still have a chance to revive themselves on the 18th if the band is willing to forget about that disaster last night. Aussies should be ashamed of themselves!

I can't believe how dead the crowd was. Eddie doesn't usually address the dead crowds but they must have been pretty bad. Hopefully the tour gets better

  • i was there last night, and i didnt think the crowd was dead...

the only time the crowd didnt participate was in Baba O'Reilly.

That was pretty much the only let down.

people who think the crowd sucked last night must have just been pissed off coz they didnt have as good a seat as Sydney 1.

They can get stuffed for all i care

It's important to remember that only the first sydney show was 10C, makes abig difference in crowd participation particularly with the avo songs.

  • Veteran of 9 shows. Toronto 2005, Asheville, NC in 2004 (a 7000 seat area full of 10C fans) stand out as greats regarding fan particiption. Last night was the other end of the spectrum. I don't mean to complain, but am posting this more for sympathy from other die hards. I was there, and this is my honest account.

And let me first say… despite the terrible crowd, the band rocked. Thank you to them for trying for those of us who cared.

    1) DTE to start -- which should send the crowd through the roof -- nothing. 90% of the crowd just sits there. No response at the church choir part. 2) Crowd was sitting in the top sections and half the lower sections for most of the night. 3) Ed says something like the following after the 4th song "How you going... maybe it is an overabundance of security out there, but don't be afraid to express yourselves. It feels a bit like a church in here". 4) You could see the frustration mounting in the band, looking at each other with the shoulder shrug "what is going on?" look in their eyes.
    5) Finally they just circled up and played to each other, only looking at the crowds during the solos and the vocal parts. 6) Eddie coming out at encore break one and saying "sorry it took so long, we were having an argument over which crowd was better last night or tonight." Crowd roars not realizing he was poking fun at them (for the record night #1 was awesome, great crowd energy). He says "I was trying to support you..." 7) Crowd finally comes to life for Daughter and Alive, prompting Eddie to collectively give the crowd the finger (which they deserved for sucking all night). You could sense him feeling -- this is all you care about? Our radio hits.
    8) They play Baba O' Riley... and I know this is hard to believe but I am serious... No one knows the words in the "Don't cry..." part. I am singing at the top of my lungs and am the only one around me doing it. Eddie looks at the crowd and says "COME ON!" obviously frustrated. 9) They finish with indifference, with the lights on, as people are walking out. Eddie has his hands in pockets. The bands gets of the stage as fast as possible once it ends. Mike McCreedy walks off obviously swearing he is so frustrated.

Now... to be fair. There were no 10 club seats for this show, and there were diehards scattered about and rocking out. And again the band rocked, trying as hard as they could to get people going. They even played some great edgy/angry versions of whipping, not for you and porch. So they were great... it was all the crowd’s (and not the 10 Club members) fault.

I have lived in Sydney for 10 months and after 5 concerts feel it is the worst place I have ever witnessed live Rock n Roll. The crowd here are terrible.

    Wow... that was cathartic.

Okay... positive thoughts for night #3. They can still bring a great show. Hopefully the diehards will be there (unfortunately, no 10C seats) in force.

  • I was at sydney 1 & 2 and i thought it was just because i didnt have as good seats that the concert wasnt as energetic, but then when ed told us that we were like a church i knew something was wrong..

Cause we are a small continent and they double up shows, WITH NO 10C seats. I think that contributes to the failed concert. It was such a good set and i think they only gave us a chance with the good set because of the fact that we were half decent at the first show..

My husband and I are Australians and die hard PJ fans ... we're going to 5 shows (bris 1, melb 1, adel 1 & 2, perth). We didn't get tickets to the Sydney shows - mainly because we couldn't get time off, but we didn't try really hard either because Sydney is well known as being completely lame when it comes to the 'rock' scene. I'm so disappointed that the crowd was awful last night, but believe me when I say that Sydney isn't indicative of the crowds in Australia. The other cities are going to completely rock out - especially Melbourne! Things will be better I promise!

Damn... I couldn't get time off to go to Melbourne. Wish I could. Rock out for me. Wish I could be there.

  • I have to agree....the crowd was a little quiet. However, I still had an absolute ball. I am still trying to choose which show I actually enjoyed more. Both sets lists (and performances) were killer. If you count the crowd, I would have to say the 1st night was better, but if you are just going off the actual show its a hard decision.

It is awesome to see PJ back at their best. The last tour was a bit dull, however still enjoyable to a fan like me. They were totally pumped that first night in Sydney.....and trying to be pumped for the 2nd night.

Cant wait to see what they come up with for their 3rd show in Sydney. I am so pumped at their performances I think I will try and get tickets for the Newcastle show and get up there too.

I went to Sydney 1 (10c tickets - 14th row on the floor) and am going to Sydney 3 (no 10c tickets - Section 29). I intend to go nuts. Watch out for a mad woman standing on her seat and repeatedly getting told to sit down. :D

Dude... I am on totally on board. We can make it happen. Nothing but positive energy. Its gonna work.

I like the sign idea. I gotta find out which row we are in, but I think it is either first or second row on the side of the stage and might have a perfect spot to hang a sign (the elvated part that is on the side, or just a little behind and gets well lit by the stage lights). I will see what I can do.

Die Hards unite and make it happen!

Great! There is no chance of me holding up a sign from Section 29, they wouldn't see it anyway. Get working on it now. :)

The only positive thing from the dead crowd is the bootleg will be very clear with no sign of audience noise. Compared to the Athens show, this might be a relief to some.

I cannot imagine being there based on everything I've read. What makes a PJ show special is the audience participation and you know the band feeds off it, especially Mike who runs around like a madman and throws his arms around trying to connect to the crowd. But to have what happened last night, I can only feel for the people who were die hard fans. I hope the band puts this show behind them and continue on rockin.

I was like that at Sydney 1. I was the only person who knew every word to Gone and got some strange looks when in the encore break I yelled out Come Back a few times.. The guy in front said "yeah, don't worry they'll be back. I laughed at him and said "I meant the song actually".
