I 100% agree with you on that.... the band feeds off the enerdy specially Mike and Ed.

I must agree that the crowd was shit. To think that the people down the front were fellow 10C members was beyond embarassing. PJ rocked! Jeff was going off in the begining and then they all seemed to lose the vibe, hang on, there wasn't exactly a vibe to start with. The crowd at the first concert in Sydney was awesome so I was disappointed with the response last night.
Please 10C members, if you are going to the concert/s, you'll have kick arse seats, make the most it for the ones who missed out. Thats all I ask.

Huh? I thought there were no 10C tickets sold for Sydney 2?

I've been to hundreds of gigs over the last 15 years or so but I've never been to one where I've been sitting down so I'm a bit apprehensive about the atmosphere. I'm hoping that Newcastle will have a crowd that's closer to Sydney 1, if not I'll have to do all the rockin myself! (with a little help from Einat no doubt!)

Sammieblack, I'll be at all Melb concerts and cant bear the thought of sitting down. I hope I see your sign. There are quite a few of us 10clubbers ready to raise the roof off the place. Melb crowds - dont disappoint!!!

I was at sydney 1 & 2 and i thought it was just because i didnt have as good seats that the concert wasnt as energetic, but then when ed told us that we were like a church i knew something was wrong..

Cause we are a small continent and they double up shows, WITH NO 10C seats. I think that contributes to the failed concert. It was such a good set and i think they only gave us a chance with the good set because of the fact that we were half decent at the first show..

I was at both shows too.... I agree, no 10C seats = shitty/casual fans up front.... different vibe

  • For everyone complaining about the crowd, blame the lack of alcohol.Everyone around me was SOBER.I couldnt believe we werent allowed to take our beers in to where we sat. What the fuck is up with that??I know myself and many others that its hard to sing and dance while sober.

Anyway PJ performances on both nights were outstanding and I had a blast.Cant wait for the 3rd Sydney and Newcastle shows.

Hey, that's one row behind where I was on Sydney 1. I have section 29 for Sydney 3 ... how depressing. Know anyone who wants to swap my tickets for some better ones closer to the stage? :)

I was thinking the same thing. I was completely sober on Tues night ... in fact if I'd been drunk I probably would have burst into tears due to the emotion of it all.

    That's a lame comment.
Maybe not for die hard fans, but i guarantee you if more people were drunk the atmosphere would have been livelier, sad but true. Fundamentals of alcohol use, counters inhibitions.
Personally i couldn't care less if i was drinking or not cos i will be enjoying myself regardless, but it just seems like a stupid rule with no rational basis

Someone said most people don't know Baba. That astounds me!
I understand the bands frustration totally. Hopefully the rest of OZ makes up for it.

Yeah I know heaps of Who songs and I know Baba. Anyone who watches "House" would know it as well.

Maybe the Aussies just want to hear Pearl Jam songs and not covers?

I would have preferred to hear one of the band's own rather than RITFW as the closing song at Sydney 1 ... but that's just me.

  • nope there is no Who in our stores. youd be lucky to find YIELD!!! just multiple copies of Ten/Vs.
    1. australians arent good with that singing/dancing/clapping stuff - we're followers, if noone else is standing then theres no way we're gonna stand. and dont even think about clapping above your head if the ppl behind are sitting. - i was abused/punched last tour for these crimes
    2. no 10C tix for the second night - theres many examples in the sydney reviews of nearby people in the first few rows sitting and waiting for daughter and alive before leaving. its sad i know but so true
3.a lot of aussies like aussie music first - ac/dc, wolfmother, jet!?!?, the living end, powderfinger, silverchair, the vines and all those douchebags like ben lee, the powderfinger guy, the jebediah guy, pete murray etc etc. these take up so much air-time in australia that all is played in between is gwen stefani greenday and emo stuff and dance stuff. old music doesnt get a look in unless its like that sunshine of your love dance re-make. the who?

I LOVE House...but don't you guys get CSI down there??? All those shows have Who songs as themes. CSI NY's theme is Baba.

Yup we get CSI too. The Who is not unknown down here.. I think it's more to do with the age group of a lot of the fans at the shows. Don't forget The Who IS a band from the 1960s. :)

  • Perhaps last nights atrocity will make the ten club rethink their ticketing strategies over here... ie let us get 10c tickets to all shows like in the US!

Remember that this was the show that many many people either missed out on tickets for or were very late in buying tickets because of the ticket sale day disaster...

Good point. I'm just about crying when I think about Section 29 for Sydney 3. I would have bought 10C for all three shows if I could have.

This is true, but I'm 31 and I know who they are. I'm a HUGE fan. That said, without the airplay and stuff I can see how they are not as well known.
I'm wondering if your stations have to follow stringent programing rules from whatever your federal regulating body is (your equivalent of the FCC is) where Aussie content has to be really high.

    5) Finally they just circled up and played to each other, only looking at the crowds during the solos and the vocal parts. 6) Eddie coming out at encore break one and saying "sorry it took so long, we were having an argument over which crowd was better last night or tonight." Crowd roars not realizing he was poking fun at them (for the record night #1 was awesome, great crowd energy). He says "I was trying to support you..." 7) Crowd finally comes to life for Daughter and Alive, prompting Eddie to collectively give the crowd the finger (which they deserved for sucking all night). You could sense him feeling -- this is all you care about? Our radio hits.

do you think this will influence their set lists ?

I fucking hope not, hope they dont turn to best of shows because most of the crowd are sheep. Most of the crowd probably didnt like the show, and were probably pissed that better man wasnt played. I am bleeding that I missed this show because of the set list. Present tense, Low light, Indeference FUCK

  • Its not the ten clubs fault I know. they cant make people have fun.
On the floor where i was it wasnt too bad actually. People all around me were having a great time. But when i looked up at the stands, it was dead and I think thats where alot of the complaints are coming from, rightly so.
Hence why they got the finger ;)
  • I went to sydney 1 and I have to say I walked out of there so fulfilled at what I saw.

An absolute amazing performance and I remember saying to the person next to me how amazing it was that Pearl Jam could still fill a 20 odd thousand venue with so many people in the crowd singing and chanting and going off. The crowd participation at Sydney 1 was euphoric...truly amazing!

These people that are saying Sydney should be skipped after some poor crowd participation on night 2 are just kidding themselves.

Pearl Jam's latest record really didnt do very well here, not much is played on the radio besides alive, daughter, jeremy, evenflow and betterman. You can't expect people to start jumping around and chanting to songs they hav'nt heard. This would happen to any band. Kings of Leon played an awesome set beforehand but the arena was only half full. People were cheering for them but the crowd was very tame. This is an example of the crowd not knowing their material.

Wait until Sydney 3 and you will see something even better than Sydney 1. I was'nt at Sydney 2 but i'm sure many people left impressed.

I am an American who moved here 10 months ago. In general I love Australia and have nary a bad thing to say (hard to complain about a place with great beaches, great weather and great people. This really is an amazing country and I love living here). The one thing I wish was different -- and was reinforced last night -- is the music scene here. The radio stations are terrible. I either listen to talk radio or nothing at all in the car, because that is better than 80s pop or top 40. I have seen crowds sit through several shows in Sydney that I thought were rocking (including Ben Harper who jamed). Maybe it is just Sydney, I heard Melbourne is better.

Sydney #1, which was great, was fuelled by fan club members. Not only the Aussie PJ fans but also a ton of people who traveled (I was in row 6, center on the floor. There were other Americans around me as well as Canadians, Germans, Peruvians, Isralies and either spanish or portuegese, I couldn't tell which). I think that adds to the excitement, when you travel to a show. I am now worried about U2 this weekend and Sydney #3 next weekend. But it sounds like there are gonna be some people at show #3 ready to rock. Because it is only half sold out, maybe there will be a greater percentage of die hards who will cary the show.

As for the 10 club tickets. I thought the story was that 10 C wanted to have seats for every night, but the promoter said no. I could be wrong, but I am thinking that is the case. Can anyone confirm that? We may see this repeating in Brissie, Melb, and Adelaide where the first show rocks and then there is a big drop off once there is no 10C section. Hopefully not, hopefully the crowd will come through (especially for Sydney #3 -- come on die hards I am counting on you).

Positive thoughts -- the tour will rock.

That's a rather ignorant comment to make. Sorry, but you are very wrong and out of line to state that the Sydney 1 atmosphere and energy was "fuelled by fan club members who traveled".
So only the Americans, Canadians, Germans and so on know how to have a good time at a pearl jam concert?
    Your comment is completely baseless.

So the 20 or so international people who just happened to be front rows centre (another issue entirely) generated all that energy in a 20,000 strong venue?

    Ridiculous mate, and senseless.

As for Aussies "struggling" at rock shows, what do you base that on might I ask?
You've obviously never been to a Tool, Shihad, NIN, BDO, Homebake etc etc etc.

    Dont be so ignorant.
