that's not just an american problem. we have the same issues here in canada. I was just having a discussion at a friend's place over the weekend, where things got fairly racist against aboriginals and their "laziness". they were saying that they sit on their asses all day drinking and smoking and getting fatter and using our health care because they eat shit instead of vegetables, yadda yadda yadda. My response to that was not that it's the fault of the aboriginals; you give anything to any group of people, any economic class of people, and they'll use it up and ask for more. it goes from being a gift to being a right. that's just human nature, not of any nation or any race or any class.

it's a flawed system of government that throws money at problems instead of getting to the root of it and trying to help people help themselves. and it's almost irreversable. if not totally.

People can whine, bitch and moan about the evil corporations of America.

But the freeloading pieces of garbage, who abuse the system for free groceries, piss me off more than the Evil Big Business.

They whine bitch and moan about our government.
But they have NO PROBLEM collecting that government check.

yeah cause its the people on food stamps that have brought your country to its knees.. those freeloading pieces of garbage.

Anyone here from a European country? Since many of their countries are set up to provide social services much more than the capitalist US, I'd like to hear how those who aren't getting by easily are treated in a more socialist country. Because we know that they are getting care, much better than here.

I find it sickening that people can be so wrapped up in what other people have and have not that they can barely function here in rich US. If you can't help those who are less fortunate then do them a favor: stop eyeing them like their stealing something from you. It's that sign of insecurity that's rampant here.

Not everyone takes advantage of the services, like you say hedonist, but boy do some like to think they do. Whatever. I may be getting help right now (not food stamps) but because I'm disabled and actually want to work again, there are programs set up to help people like me to get back into the workforce. Very noble. But let's just keep complaining about those getting services because it's easy, hateful and fun to do and besides, we can group them all into the Free-loader category, because it sure seems like they all are. *edited*

That's what I was saying though...that not everyone does, but when they do, it's "c'mon, it's designed for that". I have no tolerance for anyone milking any system, just as I want those who legitimately need help to get it.

My saying/thinking that is not akin to lumping anyone into a group. I hope I've been misread/misinterpreted, because there was no hate coming from here.

i would disagree ... although we have people exploiting programs ... i don't believe our system is set up for the purpose of exploitation ... big difference ... we actually want to balance our books in this country and although we do subsidize the big industries (mainly oil and gas) ... we don't run a system of gov't that's primary purpose is to redistribute funds into corporations ...

The abusers are just as bad as the system.....I have witnessed food stamp abuse almost daily. A cashier at my store told me (she has been working there for about 4 years) that she has only had three people pay for live lobster with legal tender all others are paying with food stamps. Our manager making 80,000 a year was using food stamps till a cashier brought it to the attention of the higher ups.....the cashier was accused of racism (cashier is white) and then quit and the manager does not use food stamps any more.

Now if this women just got laid off I would think it is time to sell the car to get food to eat....sell her jewelry....take responsibility for her own welfare.......if she is shopping for her mom she should do the same thing and help her mom....

It has always upset me when I see people coming in and buying 40-50 dollars of candy on food stamps

Then a few packs of cigarettes

    And some beer

We need to have a nutritional basis applied to the food stamps.
then that is the store's fault. not one swingin john could ever buy beers & smokes with a food card. unless the store is a corrupt store saying they sold bread instead of beer.

she could also be getting food from a church basement, from the salvation army, from a soup kitchen, from a number of food donation places. if you aint been poor shut your mouth because you don't know a fucking thing about much of anything, truly
My family went through some hard times. I know people who've gone through even harder times. I know others who haven't but still get it, understand, empathize, etc....

Whether or not one's experienced it firsthand, everyone still has the right to speak about it. Agree, disagree, maybe educate the ones being told to shut up?

I tell ya, this place is strange this morning.

Time to go have a smoke in a tree...!

But, one doesn't have to give in to the begging. Why not just do what's right? Take what you need; I'm more than willing to give to anyone needing a hand-up. Just don't take advantage. Those that do fuck it up for those legitimately in need.

    :lol::lol:

sorry but c'mon ... don't take this personally but america is a me-first nation ... take as much as you can ... however you can ...

and i would disagree with the notion that this isn't purposeful ... you have to remember that on the flip side to the person on food stamps is a retailer, a manufacturer, a supplier who is getting paid ... your gov't is in massive defecit because it chooses to spend tax dollars on feeding corporations ... whether they be defense contractors, prisons or the purveyors of cocoa puffs ... people are getting paid ...

there is not interest in "cleaning this up" ... it's a system that is designed this way for a reason ... all this talk is purposeful only in so much as dividing the population base and distracting the people from the true problems ...

I don't take it personally because some don't take the "me-first" mentality at the expense of others. Strange concept, I know ;)

My point was that just because something (or even someone) is begging to be taken advantage of, not everyone is chomping at the bit to do so. And I'm not willing to give a pass to those that do take the bait because it's what we do...because it's expected.

    Really?

Amazing that contemplating saying "maybe I'm naive" is even a consideration of mine in this conversation.
I wouldnt say naive. Idealistic yes, but naive no.

I too like to think better of people. Sadly all too often I get proven wrong. But I shall continue to think the best, its one of the few things I like about myself.

Right on. And I'd guess that you, like me, temper that idealism with realism and practicality.
