that's not the feeling I get, but I know what that feels like. I think people just get a bit riled up when they feel that their lives and how they choose to live on their own property are no longer in their own control, that's all. you can start to think "what the hell are they going to tell me I can't do next?". Here in Winnipeg, I saw a headline that says people are going to start getting fined if they don't mow their lawn enough. What if it's an elderly person that has trouble? what if someone broke their leg and can't do it for 6 weeks? is this going to be taken into account? or will you get a ticket no matter what for your grass being too long and then have to spend time and money fighting the ridiculousness of it all? I mean, I hate it when my neighbour's lawn is super long and full of weeds, but it's HIS PROPERTY. I don't feel it's my right to tell him he has to mow it.Gimli 1993

In my city, code enforcement will ticket you - regardless of circumstance - for non-working cars parked on the street in front of your home, vehicles of any kind in the yard (front or back), grass over 6" tall, trash cans left out overnight, more than 5 cats/dogs, fences/gates in disrepair and many personal freedom infringements. But there's no code on clothes lines! My neighborhood is older, so we don't have an HOA. But just try to keep a trashcan out overnight and our neighborhood watch will report you quick!2003 Dallas

The principle behind these kinds of bylaws is not one of control, but rather an attempt to protect people from those people that will just let their property go to absolute shit and lower everyone's property values. I wonder if anyone considers what might happen if those rules weren't in place? The alternative may be worse. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. The clothesline is a "gateway" yard accessory though.
Once you get used to the clothesline and let your guard down, the next thing you know, here comes the wheelbarrow and rusty backhoe setting up shop.0 -

Pretty sure the 'get a life' comment comes from the fact that the argument is entirely petty to begin with. Defend or support and you want to argue semantics.
I find your homes, streets, cars, telephone poles etc. to be an eyesore. I truly enjoy nature and find all the mass of stuff that men have built to be eyesores. So if I throw my cig butt in the street, fuck you. If I'm hiking in some pristine wilderness then it goes in my pocket until I find another pile of litter(ie. streets and buildings) to throw it in.
And for the record I'm always an asshole.#FHP0 -

This one, nope.
How is it OK to willfully contribute to something you don't like? You really don't think it's a shitty sloppy thing to just toss a cigarette butt (or any other trash) onto the street?
That mindset is part of the eyesore.
A mindsore, if you will.0 -
This thread has gone n a weird direction. From what I can tell, many if you have the idea that or society should pretty much be an absolute free-for-all. As long as no one is being literally hurt, fuck all y'all, I'll do whatever the fuck I want... for you apparent extremist libertarians - with that attitude, it would be chaos. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. I enjoy nature too, but I also enjoy many things that are man-made. It doesn't have to beone or the other.
It really? You have no qualms about littering as long as it's not out in nature???Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0 -
the cigarette butt thing is an epidemic in cold climates. they don't get washed away by rain/wind/etc for 8 months. they sit in the snow and then the snow melts and the city is a disgusting mushy cig butt wasteland.
it's fucking gross.
however, I was once guilty of this as I was once a smoker who would think nothing of tossing my butt when it was finished. but you can now buy mini-butt-out things that you can keep in your pocket that work well. I've seen them at my local video store at the till with all the other shit that people don't buy.Gimli 1993
