Probably not the right spot but I trust you guys that post here more than others, lol. I need to upgrade turntables and I'm looking at a few around $500. But this vinyl kick will be around permanently so I ask you wax gods... How big is the difference between a $500 table and say something around $1000? Because the next table I get I plan on keeping for a damn long time.
Obviously upgrade the speakers and all the other stuff as well, but I'm ok with taking my time and getting quality at each piece.'08- Camden 1-2 '09- Chicago 2; Spectrum 1-4

I wish I could help you but my Music Hall mmf 2.2 was $449. I plan on using this for as long as it lasts, great turntable. There's plenty of upgrades...... acrylic platter, speed box, cartridge, etc. I'm only upgrading the cartridge soon. The reason I bought this table is because it came highly recommended from a buddy who used to remaster & engineer albums. He said for the money, this table puts out fantastic sound.

Great info....I need to dig around those sites a bit. But I hear that a lot, the vintage vs. new argument. What exactly is the difference? Because I know people love ones in the '70's and 80's but you think modern technology would have surpassed that? lol'08- Camden 1-2 '09- Chicago 2; Spectrum 1-4

Personal preference really, I picked up a Technics SL-23 doe $50 from a Ten Club member. It was made in the late 70's, and everything works. I cleaned it up and replaced the belt, best $50 I ever spent. It all depends on how much your willing to spend. If you know what your looking for, you can find great deals on vintage tables through Craigslist and garage sales. If you have the patience, you can find gems out there. Also, this equipment is vintage so parts and repairs can cost more.Pine Knob Music Theatre - Jul 31, 1992 Crisler Arena - Mar 20, 1994

I think there are many factors at play. A $1000 table could be a big leap above a $500 table, but to really hear that jump, you are going to need to have a great tone arm and cartridge for that table. Which means increased cost on that $1000. Some $500 tables are pretty upgradable. You can outfit a Rega P1 with a great tone arm and cart and get amazing sound. Ultimately, to get better sound you are going to dump alot a cash into the hobby. Once you get the table, you need the tone arm and cart. Then maybe you need a better amp or receiver. Then speakers. Then wires. Then maybe you need a metal platter and a clamp. You see how this goes and its a slippery slope for marginal improvements in sound.
I have 3 tables, an Audio Technica, a Debut III and a VPI Jr. I'd be lying if I said I didn't get the best sound out of the VPI Jr. It was probably a $1500 table in its day (I bought it for less than half that 3 years ago). Its got a good cart and a good arm. It can pick up some details my Debut III can't. But for the most part, there isn't a huge jump in quality. I play my Debut III way more (mainly because its in my office). Its certainly not worth a jump between the $400 III and (lest say I paid) $1k for the VPI. I could outfit the Debut in a Great Arm and cart and put on an acrylic platter and get a speed box for the table, and come in around that $1000 price tag. I bet, doing a blind test, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the III and the VPI.
Going down the Audiophile road is a slippery slope. IMO its much better to get a good table mid tier table (like you are looking at) and do some improvements and save all the extra cash for LPs.0 -
Also audiophiles are pretty insufferable. Way worse than entitled Pearl Jam fans. And thats saying a lot.
For proof: go to the Steve Hoffman forums and try to read that place without rolling your eyes. Keep it simple and you'll be happier in the long run.0
