Way more than just a nice guy. But I won't speak for his baseball knowledge. I'll let the baseball players who do recommend his talent speak for itself.

Playoffs are a crapshoot. It's that simple. A .551 winning percentage speaks for itself.

People have seen ONE championship in this city in the past thirty years, and Christ, they act like they demand excellence like they've been used to championships or something. Gimme a break.

I don't disagree that the playoffs are a crapshoot, but I do disagree with a lot of the starting pitching decisions he made in huge playoff games (as I have noted over the years). I do think he cost them some playoff games during his tenure.

All in all, I'd grade him a C. Yes, he did bring a title here, which I will always respect him for, but I think he kind of sold this team short by being such a moron.

I feel really bad for sandberg. As long as Ruben Minaya Jr is still around he's in a no-win situation.

I'm just happy the phillies did something. Hopefully this is the start of many dominoes falling

I respect him. And i'm thankful for the 08 run. He made many many bad moves, but he kept the clubhouse together and that prob wasn't easy.

they choked as WS favorites two consecutive years. I think fans have reason to be disappointed after choke jobs of that magnitude

why wasn't that easy? it's not like they had a bunch of bad guys on the team.

I think he gets too much credit for that crap. The in-game decision making should take precedence over him being a nice guy, and that was something he sucked at

I wish it was Amaro that was gone, but I think everyone knew this was coming.

Doing good... living the dream in Langhorne! Hope all is well with you!

It's clear that the Phillies were willing to let him get his 1,000th win, and then it was endgame. Not sure there was any harm in letting him coach out the rest of the year.

That's awesome. I just bought a house in Stonybrook a few months ago. Having my 1st baby in Nov. Next week is my last APA match for a while as well. I gotta take time off with the boy coming. Will you be at both shows?

The time frame makes no sense imo. But it had to happen sometime I guess. Next year they'll have some money opened up, so will see what happens.

They lost in 2009, 2010, 2011 because the offense failed to show up more than the ineptitude of a manager. I'll take the majority over specificity. And the majority of the problem was the offense being shut down in big spots. They had plenty of time to win all three of those series without the what-if's of the pitching.

2009 all goes back to game 5, not game 6.

2010 comes down to failed offense, and being burned by a scorching aged offense of SF (getting hot in the playoffs at the right time because there's no reason why that SF team beat them as much as they did. And tell Madson not to throw another homer to Uribe (pretty sure that was Uribe) at a huge spot in the clincher). Plus, it doesn't help when your ace is burned by Cody Ross and other randoms. You got beat by the team that won the World Series. That's it.

2011 comes down to Cliff Lee and a failed offense.

There's a reason the best team in baseball doesn't win the championship almost consistently every year since the inception of the wildcard. And it's complete and utter randomness.

My point is blame is more to go towards the players than the manager. There's a reason they are called a manager and not a coach.

Saying a guy stumbles into a great team is lunacy, especially over an entended period of time. Saying they "should" have won two or more three titles over that time is just hilarious when I hear it. I don't think anyone realizes how fucking hard it is to win multiple titles, let alone one.

I judge a manager over seasons not 5 or 7 games of a series. Something that happens over a long course of a time is a constant, not an exception.

At any rate - none of it matters now.

I liked the Sandberg hiring at the time for the future. So on with the future....

I judge a manager over seasons not 5 or 7 games of a series. Something that happens over a long course of a time is a constant, not an exception.

2009 - ryan howard being ryan howard...and inexplicably starting pedro martinez TWICE in the WS (phils would obviously lose both of those games)

2010 - ibanez dropping the ball ross hit in first inning of game one (when doc continued to beast with a pulled groin -- god I love that dude). Cost phils the game and set the tone for the series. Honorable mention to game 6 when the phils had sanchez on the ropes (game where utley strolled halfway to the mound and benches cleared after the beast got HBP), then only scored two runs in the inning...and didn't score rest of the game (lincecum out of pen). brutal

2011 - starting oswalt, who had nothing left, in game 4...which meant lee only pitched once in series. I remember freaking about this prior to game 4...then after...then after game 5. One of the dumbest decisions in philly playoff sports history going with oswalt over halladay (short rest)/lee in games 4/5. Even though they won 100 games that year I thought the phils were overrated...but they did lose to the team who won it all, so who knows if they would have gone on a run? manuel made sure we never found out.

Do you really think manuel was a good manager? Because he definitely wasn't. It took him 5 years to figure out what a double switch is.

    http://crashburnalley.com/2013/06/08/ch ... other-win/

It's probably not right to throw dirt or glorify the guy. He was a nice guy, bad strategist, below avg manager who won with good players. I give him credit for winning in 2008, but I'm glad he's gone.

Now put amaro in the guillatine and get this thing pointed back in the right direction

Was at nicks roast beef at 20th and Jackson when the Manuel news went down and amaro pretended to cry. Probably the best place to be. Fucking hilarious

Haha. That press conference perfectly sums up this organization. Amaro is such a loser

David Murphy is phenomenal. He's a breath of fresh air...unlike turds like salisbury, stark, brookover, and the rest. He's too good for philly.com...I think he'll be scooped up by a national site soon. Anyway, his thoughts about the flaws in the organizational philosophy are exactly the same as mine. He just presents it in a more eloquent way than I do.
