Where is the middle ground on this issue? Why can't we try stricter gun control measures? Keep your guns but with limits. I've said it before and I'll say it again.....I've worked in a school with an armed police officer and that is no way for students to spend their days. School is supposed to be a caring and nurturing environment not a police state. What's next - martial law?
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...
Did the NRA even think about how expensive it would be to put a cop in every school?
LaPierre also called on Congress to act immediately “to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school in this nation.”
I'll be waiting for the small government republicans and the tea partiers to speak out against this plan.
If a cops making 50 grand a year (quick google search)... Total cost for one year would be:
$7,000,000,000
This doesn't account for use of squad car, equipment, training, etc.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

wait just one? what if they are on the other side of the building? won't we need one in every classroom, every hallway, bathroom, gym, teacher's lounge, lunchroom?
gutless not to take questions from the media. the NRA, like the Republicans in congress, are stuck in a stubborn world where compromise is weakness. so we have these nutjobs coming out advocating idiotic programs like this. commen sense isn't so common anymore.
My dad was a teacher, my sister-in-law is a teacher. The idea of either of them being armed in a classroom is absurd.
When I was growing up the NRA wasn't as nutty as it is now. It's kind of like what's happened to the Republican party - how it's been highjacked by extremists. (I'm a Democrat, but my husband and a lot of his family members are Republicans and they're sickened by what's happened to their party.) There must be moderates in the NRA. I grew up in a small town in Virginia where people went hunting. No big deal.
Sorry, I'm ranting now. But this NRA response is really really scary. And wrong. LaPierre is a freak.
It's amazing to me that they convinced so many intelligent people to fear their guns being taken away from them so much. If we could just get the normal hunter to stop believing in their bullshit, we'd all be so much better off.
uhhh ... this is pretty much the solution to everything ...

I was thinking the same thing... I grew up hunting, and I remember going to an NRA sponsored safety course, and my father in his late teens was an NRA certified shooting instructor. Unless I was just naive to the political side of things, they seemed to be an organization that was just about helping sportsmen, then any of this other crap.

I think what they did by waiting a week was respectful.
Fwiw, I cancelled my NRA membership earlier this year.
I disagree with arming teachers. I'd rather schools hire a trained guard. There are about 100,000 public schools in the country, pay the guards $50k annually. That is $5B. We sent out over $70B in foreign aid, mostly to countries that hate us. There's the money. Cut foreign aid.
Where will the funding come from to have an armed guard in every school? Will schools need to cut other programs to offset the costs of an armed guard?
This is exactly what I was wondering when people were suggesting having police in schools. Where is that funding going to come from? A lot of cities have decreased hours for public safety workers and schools have had to cut extra curricular programs, so who is going to pay for this?

But how effective will one lazy security guard going to be?
As insane as these shooters have been, they have planned these attacks (bought ammo, wrote about it in some cases, planned where and when, etc). How hard is it going to be to plan how to kill or avoid one lousy security guard.
And even the best trained security guard is going to get lazy. Just think about it, in 99% of these schools, nothing is going to happen, a guard is going to have many many long, slow days of walking around doing nothing.

Good points.
It exponentially increases the chances of a student getting shot during any kind of incident that trigger-happy cop might feel shooting is justified.
Why do people need assualt rifles and semi-automatic weapons?
Why do gun lovers equate gun "control" as the government coming to take their guns away or outlawing all guns?

and in the end,if they want armed guards ,bring all the troops around the world back home and put them in every corner of the country.....let those fuckers around the world solve their problems alone..

Why no mention of putting a cop in every movie theatre?
(scared to look if they actually made that suggestion :? )
What about every church, synagogue and mosque service?
And what about putting armed cops in roller skating rinks and bowling allys and workout gyms and public libraries and fast food resturants and public parks and .......

Shootings have happened at colleges that have armed police and army bases (i.e. VA Tech and Fort Hood). Clearly having trained cops/guards with weapons doesn't prevent mass killings. My campus has a campus police dept and there have been times I've hit the panic button and they haven't even responded. Not only do I think this idea is not the solution, but it will probably provide a false sense of security.

I agree. I think I would feel less comfortable if there were cops & guards standing around like i'm walking on eggshells.

That said, their blaming violent video games strikes me as ridiculous.
I think violent video games combined with a lack of good parenting contributes plenty. Not the whole problem mind you.
Armed guards in the schools is not the answer, arming teachers is an even worse idea. How bout we arm the kids.
Not the kind of atmosphere that kids need to be in. It's another step away from a real solution. I think people have the right to protect themselves and their home, but measures need to be taken to insure they don't fall into the wrong hands.

fun facts: the game got a 16/100 from Gamespot ... which makes it one of the worst games ever.
They also have released NRA: Varmint Hunter and NRA High Power Competition video games.
