  • Where will the funding come from to have an armed guard in every school? Will schools need to cut other programs to offset the costs of an armed guard?
    By cutting welfare of course.

Do we really live in a world where people want to put more guns in schools?

The fire department just issued a statement saying that they are now going to pour gas on to fires instead of water, because you have to fight fire with fire.
    well played. :)

  • What a horrible world they want to create by having teachers armed with fire arms all for the sake of some people can cling to some small degree of feeling powerful and 'in control'. I think this kind of environment would have a profound effect on children's lives and their values and upbringing. Fuck guns, the world doesn't need 'em. The amount of tax you American's pay for your military if you still feel unsafe and need to arm yourselves you should ask for a fucking refund.

Banning fire arms won't solve the entire problem, there will always be incidents but ban them and watch the number of murders drop faster than you could imagine. If you don't think there is a correlation between the availablility of optaining these weapons and the amounts of deaths (murder or accidental) then you're living in coo-coo land.

why the open their mouth today?
to catch up before the worlds ends?or they wait all funerals end first?

I think by waiting till today they believe they showed restraint. I'm sure there were calls from members to issue a statement the day of the attacks.

I wonder what the percentage is of those who are for teachers with guns and those who oppose what the NRA would like to impose?

  • We should just heavily fortify and arm people in schools, malls, churches, theaters, etc etc etc... That makes much more sense than trying to reduce guns.

You know those images we have in our heads of people in Afghanistan from TV/movies, where a young boy is carrying an AK-47, or random guys have them slung over their shoulder walking around their village? I honestly think that's how the NRA would like to see the US some day.

    There are 100,000 public schools.

    There are 33,000 private schools.

    There are 7,000 postsecondary schools.

Did the NRA even think about how expensive it would be to put a cop in every school?

LaPierre also called on Congress to act immediately “to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school in this nation.”

I'll be waiting for the small government republicans and the tea partiers to speak out against this plan.

Where is the middle ground on this issue? Why can't we try stricter gun control measures? Keep your guns but with limits. I've said it before and I'll say it again.....I've worked in a school with an armed police officer and that is no way for students to spend their days. School is supposed to be a caring and nurturing environment not a police state. What's next - martial law?
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

If a cops making 50 grand a year (quick google search)... Total cost for one year would be:

    $7,000,000,000

This doesn't account for use of squad car, equipment, training, etc.

wait just one? what if they are on the other side of the building? won't we need one in every classroom, every hallway, bathroom, gym, teacher's lounge, lunchroom?

gutless not to take questions from the media. the NRA, like the Republicans in congress, are stuck in a stubborn world where compromise is weakness. so we have these nutjobs coming out advocating idiotic programs like this. commen sense isn't so common anymore.

My dad was a teacher, my sister-in-law is a teacher. The idea of either of them being armed in a classroom is absurd.

When I was growing up the NRA wasn't as nutty as it is now. It's kind of like what's happened to the Republican party - how it's been highjacked by extremists. (I'm a Democrat, but my husband and a lot of his family members are Republicans and they're sickened by what's happened to their party.) There must be moderates in the NRA. I grew up in a small town in Virginia where people went hunting. No big deal.

Sorry, I'm ranting now. But this NRA response is really really scary. And wrong. LaPierre is a freak.

It's amazing to me that they convinced so many intelligent people to fear their guns being taken away from them so much. If we could just get the normal hunter to stop believing in their bullshit, we'd all be so much better off.

uhhh ... this is pretty much the solution to everything ...

I was thinking the same thing... I grew up hunting, and I remember going to an NRA sponsored safety course, and my father in his late teens was an NRA certified shooting instructor. Unless I was just naive to the political side of things, they seemed to be an organization that was just about helping sportsmen, then any of this other crap.

    Totally agree. What happened?

This just showed up on my FB page:

    The Rachel Maddow Show

It was hard to tell at times whether Wayne LaPierre was serious or had become a spectacular performance artist, making a dramatic statement about the absurdity of the NRA's increasingly twisted worldview.

I think what they did by waiting a week was respectful.

Fwiw, I cancelled my NRA membership earlier this year.

I disagree with arming teachers. I'd rather schools hire a trained guard. There are about 100,000 public schools in the country, pay the guards $50k annually. That is $5B. We sent out over $70B in foreign aid, mostly to countries that hate us. There's the money. Cut foreign aid.

Exactly. This is not the solution

This is exactly what I was wondering when people were suggesting having police in schools. Where is that funding going to come from? A lot of cities have decreased hours for public safety workers and schools have had to cut extra curricular programs, so who is going to pay for this?
