Similar to someone who is convicted of attempted murder versus someone who is convicted of murder. Why does the person who tried to kill someone but was unsuccessful get a lighter sentence than someone who actually did murder someone. Just doesn't make sense to me. This is the reason why I don't really think either of these tragedies are less or more tragic than the other one.

Actually... I would not have posted anything about the thing in China because i would not have found the story about China. within 3 minutes of hearing about the tragedy in Newtown, I would have focused everything on that story and not sought out a parallel story to compare the Newtown story with any other world event. As an American, i feel that Newtown appears in a vaccuum... at this moment in time. Give me time to grieve for the lost before countering a comparison on which incident was worse.
We will have time in the future to compare the shooting in Conneticut with the attack in China and cars and knives and baseball bats... but, tonight... at least, for this American.... it's all about the children of Newtown.

Having already known about the thing in China, it came to my mind immediately when I heard about CT (naturally)... My thought was "wow, it's like a global epidemic."

Exactly my thoughts. I cringed and knew exactly what the intent was when I saw "just as bad".. Come on, this thread is areally sad attempt. Ds, How often do you start threads on amt? And it just so happens its right after a huge gun control debate and a mass killing of 5 year olds. real sad dude.

Again I didn't make up the news. Some people in this thread say they knew about this before. Well I didn't. Sorry the first time I turned on the news or computer this morning at work was to the shit in CT. Apparently this happened about 11 or 12 last night my time here in NY. I didn't hear about it until this member's post. I was just reacting to it.

So what you're saying is someone that tries to take your life but is unsuccessful shouldn't be punished? :? I really don't care what anyone thinks about what I type, the way I feel, or my beliefs. I saw a tragic news story and commented on it. What I find disturbing is the people who feel this is somehow "less tragic" than what happened in CT.

The OP who is on the opposite side if the gun control argument, I believe, pointed out that there are sick fucks everywhere which is a valid point. And then went on to point out that one sick fuck had access to guns and around 20 little kids are dead, wiped off this earth forever, he then also pointed out that another sick fuck who didn't have access to guns also went on a rampage and attacked a similar number of children and no one is dead. One society with guns ended up with 20 something deaths while a society without guns ended up with zero in very similar situations. This is the point you want to get through so instead of being outraged, ya might want to point it out.

I tend to think that when someone you are arguing makes your EXACT point for you, you should probably roll with it.

I have no problem with you saying what you have to say - even though you ignore me, I think I defend your saying what you want more often than not because you have a right to say it (this thread included), but I do think that it is fact, not opinion, that what happened in CT today is so much more tragic than what happened in China that I can't actually bring myself to believe that you truly feel otherwise. The death of children vs the survival of children. C'mon man. Surely you must know the difference.... if not, well... can't even comment on that.

Agreed! I actually mentioned this thread to a friend on the phone when we were talking about this whole thing tonight, and the main point was that the guy without the gun didn't kill 20 kids, while the guy with the gun did.

Back in 2010-2011 there were a whole mess of attacks by people in China on school children. Armed with knives, box cutters, hammers or whatever. Over that year or so 21 were killed and 90 wounded. I guess this is a continuation of that.

Nope, certaiy not saying that nobody can get killed unless there is a gun to involved (I thought that would be assumed). But I do think (know) that attacks with guns have way more potential for killing than other hand held weapons do.

Oh for sure. I mainly vote gun control out of self preservation myself. I like my chances against a guy with a knife a lot better than a guy with a gun. I can outrun a person, not a bullet.

Good point Cliffy, I just never got past how tasteless and inaccurate the thread title was in regards to the gun control debate from a few days ago and the fact that the CT events were so much more horrific. Your point is perfect thanks..

I hear you and I agree, you can't compare the two. 20 something families will never be the same in one and 20 something families are lucky as hell in another.

This thread reminds me of the first debate though. Romney made all if Obamas points for him and rather than saying "EXACTLY" he argued with him for the sale of argument

I've been away but after reading through this thread it appears to me this thread is about DEFLECTION. Deflection from tighter restrictions or more forms of gun control and placing a majority of this problem on a deranged individual. It appears he DS wants to blame the problem more on mental issues than the difference between a knife and a gun. You are usually going to have a sick individual in BOTH knife and gun attacks especially upon young children.

So the point appears to me is don't blame the guns, don't blame the knife/sword....blame the sick individual even though it takes a driven sick person to cause these tragic events in the first place. That's my take on this thread regardless of DS views on gun control. It's pointless to me, sadly.
