correct, but a CAT1 storm with the pressure of a CAT3 storm is (945mb) serious

PS (944mb & under would normally be seen in CAT4 storms)

Its a Cat1...but don't let that fool you. You are correct about the size. Where a normal Hurricane would come ashore & be gone in around 8hrs, this storm will be around for 36 or so. 36 hrs of tropical storm winds & rain & a constant pushing around of the surge water is a serious thing. I'd rather have a Cat3 storm hit my place than this one.

In Feb 2010 we had a cat 4 cyclone the size of Katrina hit 200km north of where I live. We copped about a medium Cat 2 but it lasted FOREVER. So fucking glad the eye of the cat 4 cyclone didn't hit our 200,000 pop town and instead hit a tiny coastal town. The winds lasted forever though....12-18 hours after it hit the winds were still blowing fucking hard. Flooding was nowhere near as bad as they predicted though.

    Good luck everyone!

Full moon high tide expected at the same time the hurricane hits land.
Sustained hurricane force winds for an extended period of time.
Lots of flooding and trees down.

I'm 35 miles north of NYC and its already blowing. I expect my power will go out later this evening.

    Stay safe folks!

Is Delaware going to be affected?

I had no power for three days when Irene blew through last year. It sucks, but no worries, I dont mind camping in my house for a few days. :D

Id say yes to Delaware. They are probably getting hammered with rain right now.

Didn't have power in CT for about 6 days I think. I was just watching Morning Joe and it didn't look like it'll be that bad in Central CT. (I hope)

Yeah CT got hit worse then us in westchester.

This should be less intense than Irene, but its going to last a lot longer!

winds are getting stronger by the minute here on the south shore of long island... not much rain though
  • CT state highways closing at 1pm today.
I'll be leaving work before then. Not getting stuck here, thats for sure!

Stay safe everyone. Fingers crossed we dont lose power for days. 5 days no power for Irene was a cake walk compared to what it'd be like now. Cold showers when its 90 outside is one thing. Cold showers when its 40-50 outside is no fun. I'll be workin on some nappy dreads come day 3

It just seems a bit overboard....maybe. Are they more worried about flooding or wind damage?

(Admittedly, I haven't seen a lot of news on this since I'm doing hospital duties with my sister's baby again....but I come from a cyclone prone area and the hype just seems slightly overboard....from the stuff I've read)

This is happening on the East Coast of the US. Everything is magnified. It will be a bad storm, but you'd think the world was coming to an end. Stay safe everyone.

This storm is HUGE - 2nd biggest hurricane ever...bigger than Katrina, etc. The jersey shore is already flooded...high tides are not helping with that.
