It's astonishing to me that someone this brain dead and offensive could be elected. He might be the new king of the GOP morons.

And he sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Wtf? He obviously has no goddamn clue what science is.

  • BTW... I made a thread about this guy recently...

    viewtopic.php?f=13&t=194071

He sure does seem to put his total ignorance of reproductive issues on display... often.

You'd think he'd crack a book open on the subject.

Good question. My guess is that he believes that the only "legitimate" rape is when a woman is attacked and raped by a stranger in an alley by gunpoint. All those rapes that occur to children and adults by someone they know probably really don't count. Makes me wonder why he needs to try to delegitimize the majority of rapes. Thanks for setting victims' rights back by about 40 years

And that's some fancy science he's using there. All that happens when the survival instinct kicks in is that our stress hormones flare up (cortisol and adrenaline). People with anxiety disorders have high level of these hormones in their system all the time...and they get pregnant. Who knew that anxiety is such an effective form of birth control?

speaking as a missourian, this guy has been around for awhile. he is running against claire mccaskill for her senate seat. akin has been running scathing attack ads here (paid for by PACS) trying to equate her with obama and it has been working for him. he is basically running on his christianity and his staunch pro life beliefs and that he is NOT mccaskill or obama. it would not surprise me if he wins because polls show that brain dead stupid missouri voters eat that shit up...

i hope to god that claire uses this against him. she has tried to stay honorable up to this point, but with the super pacs going negative on her already she has to get dirty this time.

everyone posting seems amazed that this guy wins elections. i am not, because a lot of missouri voters are single issue voters, and that single issue is abortion.

And if Akin wins, can we partition Missouri? Maybe they'd like to join Texas and secede? Talk about going Taliban? Jeesh.

    agreed.

his stating that is so disrepectful and insulting to rape victims. as well as insulting the intelligence of anyone having the slightest clue how the reproduction system works. he's beyond moronic...there's no excuse for him expounding such total bullshit.

It's just infuriating and so devaluing to millions of survivors. He can express his views on abortion without being so offensive. I agree - he is clueless about reproduction. He may be the perfect example of why we need sexual health education in schools.

Luckily very few. Even the Tea Party is backing away from that.

Even the people who bought the existence of "death panels" don't buy the "secret rape fetus self-abortion function" of a "female body." Even the term "female body" makes it sound like it's a specimen you'd find in a lab.

    +1

So, if I'm understanding him correctly - when I am raped, I need to teach my body to react to the rape as a "legitimate rape" and "shut down" rather than depend on a morning after pill to be available?

I used to hear this stupid notion 20-25 years ago (pregnancy as a result of rape is rare, the violence of the act prevents conception from occurring) but it mostly came from fundamentalist religious leaders. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that something so outrageous is still kicking around. But the fact that it's coming from someone who holds public office is mind-boggling. And scary.

  • Something else that confuses me...

He said that if a woman's body doesn't do her magic vagina trick and abort the fetus, then there should be punishment and it should be "on the rapist."

    Does that mean...

    A) if she DOES do her magic vagina trick and abort the fetus that the rapist doesn't get punished (since that means it wasn't a legitimate rape)

    Or

    B) that the rapist must pay for the abortion himself?

I really hope it's B), because the last time I checked, rape is illegal. Although... maybe he's not aware that rape is illegal and he's going off of the assumption that it isn't?

Or maybe he means the rapist should pay child support?

Or maybe he means the rapist should be sentenced for both the rape and the act of bringing a child into the world against the rape victim's will?

HOW CAN THIS GUY BE SO STUPID?

I think he believes an old school notion that the female body
under the great stress of rape will rarely conceive, he's not alone.

    http://www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/492/26/

    http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/08 ... -not-alone

I am assuming he may have been thinking of the different types of rape
when he said legitimate, as in statuary rape which is by law rape but can be consensual.
Legitimate as far as the physical reactions he believes takes place in the body.

Not agreeing nor condoning his statement, just understanding what he meant,
nor am I into attacking him as some here are....
