I guarantee every paper in every other country tomorrow morning will at least mention the US somewhere on their front page...probably with a headline as well.
Nope, nothing here but a brief mention of the USA in the Olympics.
Sorry to break it you, but the rest of the World really does not give a toss about America. No more or less than any other country. And as for 'culture', I'd never heard of Snookie before. I had to Google it. Not sure if you were joking, but if that's your idea of culture....?
The U.S cultural influence on the rest of the World is really pretty minimal. And outside of fast food restaurants and t.v shows, I'm pretty hard pressed to think of anywhere where any other country's culture has been greatly influenced. Korea and Japan spring to mind with their love of U,S fashions, baseball, and basketball. Also, the Chinese love basketball. God knows why. They also love KFC, but that's not culture. It's just trash.
Though you won't find many people in Europe who could give a toss about U.S fashion or sports.
It's at the top of the page. It mentions how many Americans appear to suffer from ego-centrism, and attention-seeking. I suspect it stems from a media and/or culture that teaches people that 'success', and ultimately self-worth, can be measured by how many Facebook friends you have, or by how many people get to see your face on t.v. It may also be related to a culture/media obsessed with promoting fear and violence - see 'Bowling For Columbine' if you need some elaboration.
It was an attempt to understand the repeated incidents of extravagant violence that keep occurring in the U.S.
And your following posts helped corroborate my point.
Thanks again.
"And your following posts helped corroborate my point." Pretty typical of your posts. You try to be some "World shaker" without actually saying anything. Sorry to inform you that the US culture dominates the World. If you choose not to believe it that's fine...that's your opinion. I notice from your signature - list of PJ concerts dates - that you visted Canada about 15 years ago. Is that the foreign trip your were referring to above?
I'm not having a dig here. I'm genuinely curious. Have you ever traveled outside of North America?

Yes I have. Through Europe actually. They played a lot of US shows on TV, US music on the radio, and they all wore jeans. Pretty sure the entire continent spoke English as well...but that was just pure coincidence.
What's that language you're speaking? Looks like English to me.
This went over his head B.
But back to the subject - yes, I believe in the US, it would have been a shooting and many more would have either been dead or seriously injured. I don't think any reasonable person can believe otherwise.
That's your opinion and I respect everyone's opinion. But I guarantee every paper in every other country tomorrow morning will at least mention the US somewhere on their front page...probably with a headline as well.
Hmm...Sorry this paper decided to splash their front page with a huge picture of the Olympics (which BTW are pretty meaningless here in the US even though US still ends up in the leaders...sorry but the truth) but when you go to the actual news section of this paper....there the US is. Perhaps you can find a college newspaper somewhere? :fp:
but you guaranteed me it would be on the FRONT page... with a headline as well :fp: :fp:

A teenager has been arrested after killing nine people and wounding four others in a knife attack in northeast China, state media reported Thursday.
The 17-year-old, who was identified only by his surname Li, barged into the home of his girlfriend armed with a knife following an argument and killed two relatives of the girl, the Legal Daily said.
As he left his girlfriend's home in Liaoning province's Xinbin county, he stabbed six more people to death and wounded five, it said.
One of the injured died Thursday in hospital, the paper said.
Li was arrested near the scene of the attack, late on Wednesday night, and was taken into custody, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

So I guess I should've used my first ever, usually avoided "+1"
I could go out on a limb and say it wouldn't have been a bunch of old londoners being attacked. Aside from that there aren't that many conclusions you could assume about it being here.
As I have pointed out, assault rifles are less likely to kill a person than a cutting tool so jumping to the conclusion that this person would have jumped at the chance to buy a gun just shows the bias of those assuming.
If it was in the US, seemingly the entire world, but mostly just 24 cable news, would talk about it for months on end and there would be a push for machete banning around the country. There would be a few good jokes written about it on night time tv. Probably also would be a bunch of people standing up for the rights of Americans to buy and own machetes who would march on the location about a week after the attack holding signs that read "Machetes don't kill people, people kill people" and they would be right, and others would counter that Machetes are dangerous and they would be right too...
You're right in a few places -- Machetes are very dangerous. I could probably hack at like 3 people before I was likely stopped, as opposed to 70 or more people before my 'machete' jammed on me.
and yes, I'll agree: assault rifles are less likely to kill a person than a cutting tool...but I think our responses were just some light sarcasm...and anyway, you're more likely to be shot with an assault rifle in the USA than you are in the UK, and THAT is no joke. When an AR-15 is almost as easy to get as a machete, that is a fucking travesty to me.[/quote]
have you tried to buy one?

First of all, US culture does not "dominate the world." Secondly, its his choice of words that comes across egotistical. Dominate? And the bit of US culture that seems to seep over to other countries is nothing to be proud of, as was already pointed out - McDonalds, KFC, Snooki... :fp:
Street signs in English is a US culture thing? :? I disagree. Maybe Americans are just able to travel and countries want them to be able to tell how fast to go?
If I was proud of the fact that US baseball is popular in other places, I would not say US baseball DOMINATES THE WORLD. I would say Us baseball is quite popular in Japan.
You're quote got all screwed up. I didnt say that last part.

No, I have no need for an AR-15, just as most people outside of the military do not. But from what i've heard, read and seen, its pretty easy to get one. Wanna do an experiment? How about everyone on this site send $5 and I'll see how easy and quickly I can get one legally?

The "sun never setting on the British Empire" was most responsible for the global presence of the English language, not American influence.
Americans don't bother to learn other languages, they just expect everyone else to speak English. Yes, if you go to Europe you'll find English-speaking people everywhere. You'll also find that they speak French, German, or Italian plus 3 or 4 other languages besides their own. When I went to Germany years ago, it was a little embarrassing how indulgent people were of my shaky German and what linguists so many of them were. They could hardly expect to visit the U.S. and find that every 3rd person or so was fluent in German.
Five people hurt in church hall 'machete attack'
Five elderly singing group members have been injured after a man reportedly armed with a machete burst into a church hall.
An 84-year-old man was among those hurt during the incident at St Paul's Cray hall, in Orpington, south-east London, on Tuesday night.
"None of the injuries are believed to be serious and none were caused by the machete," a Met Police spokesman said.
The force said a man, 56, had been arrested as part of investigations.
He was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage and was being treated in hospital for a hand injury, the police spokesman added.
'Smashed car'
Members of the group said a masked man with a Mohican haircut, or wearing a wig, broke into the hall and staged a random attack.
Two women, one in her 80s and another aged about 60, and three men - one aged 84 and two in their 60s - were injured, according to the Met.
Ginny Warner, who had been singing in her local ladies' barbershop group, said a man "went to the vicar's driveway and was smashing up the vicar's car and then he started walking towards where we were".
"I was trying to peep through the curtains to describe him to the police on the phone without being noticed," she added.
Ms Warner said it took two passing strangers to bring the attack to a halt.
"A black guy who was a complete hero arrived and wrestled the guy on to the grass," she said.
My guess is that if this had been in the States we'd be looking at multiple deaths via a gun... god bless the UK.
If this had been in the US the bad guy would have a gun and machete
like they do here in Atl...
some little ole lady would be a sharp shooter and take him out
before he made it to the church...

There's not as much of a necessity here to learn other languages, although I took four years of French in school! Here, you typically have to take that or Spanish as part of the curriculum.
I would think part of the multilinguistics in Europe is tied into their geography. And agreed, they were very kind to not laugh as I unintentionally butchered some of their languages when I was there

I had a funny experiance where when I first started visiting US national parks, the foriegn visitors outnumbered local visitors by such a margin, that I started using the pre-fix of "Excuse me. Do you speak English?" before asking any further questions.
But really, why would our education system focus on different languages? Spanish and French our taught due to our proximity to countries that speak Spanish and French. The chances of interacting with someone who speaks Portuguese or German is infinitely smaller and would be an unwise choice for the education system to focus on.
Countries in Europe may teach a wider variety of languages because they have a wider variety of languages in their proximity. It's not because Americans are arrogant that we don't know 3-4 languages. It's about proximity.
