I agree, but a big part of this "blowback" is in elected officials trying to prevent Chick-fil-a doing business in their state/area. When the gov't creates barriers to private activities due to selected speech of related individuals, it becomes a 1st Amendment issue.

I think there is a very gray line between the gov't creating barriers and a mayor giving his opinion. I haven't seen anything to suggest (I might have missed it) the gov't actually doing anything to hinder chick-fil-a. The gov't, like a business, is subject to the market and the citizens of the city are free to vote him/her out of office if they disagree.

Yikes. That line doesn't seem very gray anymore.

    Thanks.

An opinion is one thing, using your political position to impede business is something else. I won't touch anything from Chick-Fil-A because I'm not really into fast food, but they have every right to open a franchise wherever they want. If Chick-Fil-A's values aren't Chicago's values or Boston's values the people will speak with their wallets. Mayor Menino's letter definitely went to far. It's not his position to tell voters what franchises to open, period.

Chick-FIl-A's position on gay marriage will undoubtedly impact sales in some locations. The real losers here are franchise owners who are seeing their businesses put under scrutiny because Dan Cathy can't keep his personal views and his corporate interests separate. I wouldn't be surprised if a franchise owner (or owners) takes legal action against the corporation for needlessly devaluing their franchise.

My take... sometimes boycotts and protests backfire... this is one of those cases.
so what if the the owner of Chik-a-fil is against gay marriage/life style... we all should have known that going in. It'd be like being shocked that Hitler hated Jews.
    ...
For me... I personally don't eat at Chik-a-fil, not because what it's owner/CEO says or believes... it's because if I want a dry ass, shitty chicken sandwich, I'll go to McDonalds... which I DON'T go to because I don't like eating dry ass, shitty chicken sandwiches. And YES... I tried them... and even gave them a second chance. I'm just not a big fan of crappy fast foods.
The best way to deal with it is to say you disagree with the owner's opinions... and go someplace else for crappy fast food... instead of trying to form other people's opinions to conform with yours.

The Sanctity of Marriage (according to the Bible):
"If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her."

"If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her , dislikes her and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, and the elders shall take the man and punish him. They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives."

"If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you."

"If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel."

"If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you."

"But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her."

"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives."

That was a good read, thanx.
That was my take... nothing to do with the First Amendment... everything to do with me not liking their food.
    ...
I think the protests are dumb... boycott if you will... but, don't try to coerce others to conform to your opinions and boycott. And, as many protests and boycotts do, it is generating a lot of free publicity for the chain.

Not all publicity is good publicity. Apparently over 50% of the U.S. population supports gay marriage, and many more than that support gay rights and will still likely be turned off by this... I have a feeling they will be stunned by the impact this all has on their bottom line. But yeah, as I mentioned before, they will simply look like bigotted a-holes in history (as well as possibly run their business right into the ground), and that's good enough for me.

PS - I had never even heard of this chain until this news popped up. I don't know why anyone would have chosen to eaten at a place called Chick-Fil-A in the first place. It sounds like a gas station.

But, you will also have all of those types that WILL go there just because this place was brought into the light by the protests.
    ...
Regarding Chik-A-fil... I was told how great this place was/is. They've been around for a while... i just never got around because thought they were just a KFC rip-off. I finally tried it... and it was pretty bad. Just a dry chunk of deep fried chicken on a hamburger bun and a mayonaise station where you can slather on Bar-B-Que sauce, Ranch Dressing, etc..
It was cheap and fast and the people were nice enough... but, I wouldn't go back...
Except that time we were heading out to the Sierras for a fishing trip and we stopped for food/gas in Kingsburg. Again... dry chicken slathered in barbacue sauce and a coke and fries... something to keep by stomach from growling will we hit bases camp. I wanted to stop at the 'In And Out Burger'... but, it was further just too crowded.

That bump will be a small bump since people that DO go there because they are against gay marriage will realize they have shitty dry chicken sandwhiches and not go back.

The shitty dry chicken sandwhiches will not tempt those that boycott back in.

    Hopefully...

That's pretty much it. A few people also did research and found that Chick Fil A donates to causes that don't support same sex marriage (which it has for a while), but I think most people boycotting Chick Fil A aren't aware of this and are just boycotting it based on the president's comments.

Am I the only one that likes their sandwiches/nuggets/chicken strips? :? I haven't had a dry sandwich there. Anyway, any Chick Fil A I have always seen has been crowded during lunch/dinner...I'm talking about drive through lines wrapping around the store and going into the street and no seating room inside. I drove by yesterday and the line was going into the highway. I don't think they are losing much business over this.

The ironic thing is the public likes to demonize the congress, especially the republicans, for their failure to compromise, etc. And then they stop buying chicken sandwiches at all chik-fil-a's and some politicians talk abotu not having chik-fil-a in their towns because of what one guy said. Not to mention, unless you are an idiot you should have known this already.

really ... in this day and age - the most power regular folks have is in the power of their spending ... if people really wanted change - they would look towards their spending to make that change ... $$$ is all that matters ...

so, having said that ... if someone recently decided to stop spending at this place because of this guy's beliefs ... that's their choice ... just like it is someone deciding to spend more money there because of it ... people are making those choices every day already ...

What is the USA's stance on Same Sex marriage?
    60/40 For? 50/50? 40/60?

    Anyway...
If we ALL started boycotting businesses, because of their political and or religious beliefs....

We would ALL be walking around naked, with no gas in our cars, and none of us would be eating any chicken!

i'm not sure what the rate is... at the end of the day tho - i don't see why anyone would have a problem if someone decides to boycott a place ... frig ... i will boycott a place just for bad service ... we all make similar choices every day ...

i think why this particular topic is somewhat touchier is that this guy actively gives money to organizations who's goals include denying gay people the right to get married ... it's one thing to believe marriage is between a man and a woman ... it's another to force that belief onto others ... just because gay people marry doesn't change the nature of someone else marriage ...

it's like if i believed poker in all its forms should be banned and actively contributed to organizations that wanted to ban poker ... how would you feel about that?

people like palin supporting chick fil a are only driving people like me further away. palin is acting like a teenager by getting a pic of herself at chick fil a and posting it. she is just trying to piss people off. she does not even have a dog in any political race, so why would she do this sort of thing? if they are in bed with the likes of palin, fuck them too...

i think people vote with their wallet, and as polaris x said, our dollar and where it is spent is the only real power we have anymore.
    Honest question...
    Gimme an honest answer...

    In the last 5 years...

I totally agree with voting with dollars- yet another reason I rarely eat at most fast food places.

Chipotle Grill is an exception. They support local and (quite often) organic farming. Oh- and you probably won't so photo ops of Wonder Woman (I wonder what she'll do next for publicity  ) there.

Didn't chipotle just fire hundreds of workers that were in the country illegally?

In regards to the OP, I don't eat at Chick-fil-a because the food is garbage. I support their right to free speech and I support those that choose to go there or not.

It's another non-issue that is being used to distract from the real issues.

    probably about three hundred bucks.

up until about 1.5 years ago i used to eat it all the time when i would go to the mall or when i was out in the valley. then i started hearing about how they were trying to run their business according to the bible and that turned me off some. i didn't mind if they did, but once they started proclaiming it and being public about it and speaking out against gay marriage i began to have a problem with them. they need to realize that they might be representing the best of what religion has to offer, but by doing so they also represent the racism, bigotry, and divisiveness that religion has caused, so they also represent the worst of what religion has to offer. at that time, i still ate there but i did not go out of my way to get it. i started going to the malls on sunday afternoons due to my schedule and i would have eaten there but they were always closed. now i refuse to eat there. a drug rep tried to bring us chick fil a a few weeks ago and i asked him to bring me lunch from somewhere else. was i a pain in the ass for him? probably so, but if he wanted to bring me lunch, meet with me and potentially get our business he was not going to spend money there on my behalf....
