Emerson , Lake and Palmer 1971 New Haven CT
I had too much to drink and vomited right where I was sitting.
I do not remember much.
My second show was Ted Nugent In Sprigfield, MA
The crazy man wore a lion cloth and shot a flaming arrow across the arena.

The Monkees, featuring "Weird Al" Yankovic, Louisville Gardens, 1987. I was eleven. "Weird Al" is officially the first live artist I ever saw perform, and I think that's fantastic. I saw one other show with my dad as a kid--a multi-act "History of Rock'n'Roll" show with a bunch of ex-members of name bands, plus Tiny Tim on ukulele and Otis Day & the Knights (the party band from "Animal House").

First show as a semi-adult (when I was 18): Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge, RCA Dome, Indianapolis, 1994. Counting Crows opened. It was a few weeks before the start of my sophomore year in college, and I was off and running. Been to hundreds of shows since.
  • June, 1987...I saw the Beastie Boys open for Run D.M.C. at the Greek here in Los Angeles. Fantastic show, 2 days after high school graduation. Something I will never forget.
Seen the Best Rock Band on the Planet a few times here and there.

14 years old and one of the first times I ever got drunk -- went with my older brother and all of his friends. It was actually a pretty cool show.

  • Blur at the Mile End Stadium in 1995. Then Reading Festival later that year - Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Neil Young (with PJ as his backing band), Green Day, Hole, Beck, Mudhoney, Blind Melon - almost too much awesomeness for my 13 year old mind!

Guns N' Roses, June 28th, 2006, in Oslo (Spektrum). At the age of 18, was pretty old for a first gig, but whatever. If I remember correctly, they opened with Jungle, It's So Easy and Brownstone, a real sucker punch and the pit was stirring. Great fun. Nightrain was amazing this night.

The good old days. What a foursome for 10 bucks. I saw U2 for 6 bucks in 1981.
How was Frank Marino back then ? I hear he is unbelievable now.

Doors - Fillmore East - 1968. I was only a kid (10 going on 11) and had been listening to bands like the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane & the likes of Dylan, etc. but I wasn't that much 'into' music and didn't know who the Doors even were. It was a Saturday and I was staying for a 'sleep over' at my friend's. Her dad worked at the Fillmore and asked it we wanted to see where he worked and watch a band. I was blown away (even at that tender age) and the Celebration of the Lizard has been branded on my brain since. My first and most amazing experience of live music.

8-)8-)8-) Imagine if you took one of those cardboard ads for the concert off the wall. It would be worth a couple grand now.

If only I had been a few years older, I could have appreciated what I witnessed a lot more (and nicked a poster or two!)
