Looks like Russell Wilson has been to the Ricky Bobby school of hand gesturing. He seems pretty creepy in the American Insurance commercial.

  • Anyone have any suggestions on how to learn more about football? I feel like I just know the basics. I don't really learn a lot just by watching - except MNF - those guys are awesome.
I have Football For Dummies and it's good. Any videos or films out there? I want to learn more specifics/details about each position and understand plays better. I want to know the difference between a Tampa offence and a West coast offense.
How did you guys learn? By playing? Your dad's taught you? Did you read books? I don't feel like I know the half of it. Any recommendations?

I think that by watching you will take a long time to gain the depth of knowledge you are looking for -- it is easier for those who can sit around and talk it. (Imagine how I feel when I sit with a group from your country and talk strategy @ a Juniors game or something like that -- as a kid raised in the cold of VT I loved and learned hockey at a young age...but it was not the obsession culturally like the NFL was, and I still learn stuff many times when I talk hockey with Canadians)
A few basics books are probably good but I think watching John Gruden or Ron Jaworkski break down film on TV is the best way on the tube you will find to learn.
Someone already mentioned playing Madden but this really is a good way and if you pay attention to what things are called and go through the tutorials it will show you how to recognize the sets and what the tendencies are from those sets.
(Attending a game from the upper deck can be a really fun thing trying to pick out what plays they are running since you can often see just how the chess match between the coaches is playing out.)

It just occured to me that Adrian Peterson was on the cover of Madden 25 last year ...

Madden now has the chance to end the careers of an entire defensive secondary!

Wow, great post, thanks. Yeah football is so complicated and I don't feel I understand it any better than I did 20 years ago. And certainly not in depth. There is so much to learn. Hockey doesn't have nearly the same amount of strategy or number of plays in a play book as football, but I know what you're saying.

I'm always amazed at some of the commentators and how they explain a play that just happened - I have no idea how they see half this stuff? I just really want to increase my level of knowledge on the game and see the things they are seeing without always needing an explanation.

Madden sounds great - I will invest in Playstation or something. Maybe buy myself one for Xmas. I like the idea of it being interactive and not just reading a book, although I do have Football For Dummies like I said and it's really good. I've been to 2 live games, but couldn't really learn much that way. It's really overwhelming and all I see are 22 guys on the field running around hitting each other, lol. I'd like to anticipate a play before it happens and know what I'm looking at when they line up a certain way - on both sides of the ball.

  • The announcers sit up high (plus they also have access to the team videos and prepare for discussion on certain plays) and are able to see formations. 1/2 of the announcing team is almost always a coach or a player because even following all of their lives and having parts of their jobs being 'Announcers' for the NFL, there is still a tremendous amount that us normal folks will not pick up on or even know.
Jaworski is the great teacher on ESPN but I think he doesnt get airtime any more like he used to and Gruden seems to be the film guy now. If you ever get the chance to watch a show or segment where 'Jaws' breaks down tape it is fantastic.

  • Gruden is great at explaining a playbook. I like watching him break down the college QBs right before the draft.

jaws is so underrated nationally. i guess he has an odd/unlikeable personality. but he's quite visible, and has a radio show in these parts. always felt he knows the game much better than most other commentators out there....he just has a weird delivery.

waiting trophey--what country are you from? i didn't realize you were not from here and, for what it's worth, i've always felt like you know what you're talking about when it comes to football. maybe you should give yourself a bit more credit!

agree jaws is fantastic - he just doesn't do 'entertainment' which is why he's not a bigger star. he just talks the game and breaks it down without having to do fancy names, hyperbole and all that other bullshit.

I'm Canadian. Thanks, I appreciate the comment. And yes I know probably as much as the average fan, give or take, but I want to learn more. At least I'm not like my wife who just chooses teams based on the color of their jersey, lol.

i hate bye weeks. i think they should just take a mid season break in week 8. give the whole league the week off at once. put college football on sunday for that weekend and then get right back at it next week. when you have 5 or 6 teams off each week, it really diminishes the amount of intriguing games.

plus doing it that way would mean nobody is at a disadvantage with having less rest than a team coming off a bye.

Anybody else getting roped into apple picking this Sunday due to their team not playing? At least the place we are going to has beer and wine tastings, so there is that...

  • Is it really necessary to walk all the way to the other end of the field to kick a field goal at the end of a quarter? So what if the clock is at zero. Kick the field goal and then take the 3 seconds off the clock to start the next quarter.

Also, a commentator made this point last week and I agree. They should stop the clock after a big gain play so that both teams can make it up to the line of scrimmage. Maybe on plays that gain 30+ yards. They shouldn't keep the clock running. It's especially not fair to the offence when there's little time to score.

  • Happy to see TB win. Don't like to see teams winless. Especially glad for Glennon - I saw him play last year and he was impressive. Should have been their starter - not McGown. Maybe TB could be 3-1 instead of 1-3.

I don't think I've ever seen worse coaching than I saw with chip Kelly today. Horrible. You've got the best running back in the league on 3rd and goal from the 3yd line and you pass. Foles should have knew better and checked to a run. The eagles deserved to lose.

How well did they run the ball for the game? I don't think they ran the ball well last week either.

Yes, the Eagles deserved to lose.

  • What an awful game tonight. Figured it would be a shootout. Not a blowout.
