plus is it possible that it's disappeared from our popular culture as a reference because at some point someone decided that it was a racial slur (it is by law) and stopped using it? plus if it's just a fucking team name then who the fuck cares if they change it?

nobody anywhere uses this word as a slur. nobody anywhere cared about this until our stupid national media told people to care about it.
first people do use that as a slur, go stay some time in places bordering native or first nation reservations and you'll hear it. second, by law it is recognized as a slur that's why they can't trademark the team name. third, by your logic if we all agreed to stop using the term "nigger" today, then in 30 years we could name a team the New York Niggers with a black mascot, doing some form of bastardized hip hop dance and shooting a gun, and no one could complain. that's most ridiculously flawed of all your ridiculously flawed arguments. just change the team name it's not going to hurt i promise. and finally this fight has been going on for a lot longer than 2 months. think of all the universities that have changed mascots Stanford, Syracuse, Marquette, St. John's, etc. those things happened 20-50 years ago, hardly a new problem. guess how many of them lost money on the change? how about none ever.

difference between redskin and ni--ger is that word is used as a slur on a daily basis. have you ever heard anyone use redskin as a slur? i haven't. and no, don't tell me you've heard it used on a reservation at the boarder because i doubt you have ever been there.

if there was a major groundswell in this country of native americans who were outraged over this, i could understand, but the truth is there isn't. there are no marches in washington.

It's funny watching sports media trying to drum up a bunch of fake drama for the Colts / Broncos game. They are like a bunch of children trying to wave a sparkler in our collective face.

I did notice during the Colts/Chargers game that the announcers were talking about that game so much that I got the feeling they wished they were calling that one instead.

At least there is SOME public interest here. Peyton going up against his old team. It's more funny to watch ESPN try to drum up interest in some lame-ass MNF matchup. Trying to make a big deal out of two horseshit teams, create some half-ass rivalry by bringing up some 20 year old blown call or rowdy game nobody remembers. I don't watch it anymore, but when I used to watch ESPN, namely PTI and ATH on a game day, it was truly hilarious. Because they do updates each commercial break, and are trying to keep the news flowing in, and they just reach so far. They'll drum up some old high school rivalry, or find some player who has a third cousin who just gave birth, something.

Dude I grew up in very far upstate New York (Watertown) where Native American and First Nations Reservations were all around. Anyway, this is probably the best argument and critique (all the way around) out there since it's written by an Indian (the legal term) http://deadspin.com/redskins-a-natives- ... 1445909360. Can't wait for the Cowboys-Eagles game Sunday...all these fat guys on steroids wearing pink to make money on cancer is always fun ;)

Imagine if someone made one of the greatest regular season plays ever during October. A play like that great Steve Young run against the Vikings. Or that great Michael Vick run against the VIkings. Or the time one of the Vikings ran the wrong way for a touchdown. Forever and ever they'd show that clip and it'd look so stupid with all the pink. Also, the Vikings really need to get their act together.

yeah. i think about this kind of stuff all the time. like picture some classic footage of the 85 bears defense just destroying an opponent...but dressed in pink cleats, socks, wrist bands, and gloves. just doesn't look right.

    way overboard

Pretentious NFL, in the same vein of having the players read the Declaration of Independence before the Superbowl.

Part of me cant wait for the Bills to move so I can be freed of this garbage

That's the bottom line. Thursday games, London games and pink football gear, it's all about the bottom line. Forget the fact that the product on the field is suffering with mostly mediocre teams.
    Alright, alright, alright!

why did the clock stop there? seahawks had no timeouts and it was a holding penalty on them....shouldn't that have been a 10 second run off at the end of the half? :?

I was wondering that too. I always thought there was a 10 second runoff for the offense under 2 mins when they don't have any timeouts left. I feel like I learn a new NFL rule every week...

i've had old students swing by at various times over the last few years and have found that these experiences were us proving that we knew the rules more than watching the game. the nfl has a shelf life is all i have to say. it'll be weird when other sports matter more to us, but that's the nature of life methinks.

unless, i'm crazy, i honestly think the ref's messed up and you and i are the only ones who noticed.

if how it played out was correct, then every team would purposely get a holding penalty or something if they are out of timeouts and in field goal range at the end of the half/game. :?

P.S. Indifference and Juggler I thought the same...it's just crazy that there are rules for rules and some are changed year-to-year and others aren't. Some make sense, others are inane. This game is so dumb, but so compelling at the same time.
  • Jason PJason P Posts: 19,138
The rules of football are a big reason why the NFL will not succeed outside our borders. I can't imagine understanding what was going on if I didn't grow up playing and watching it. Hell, I can't figure out what is going on during a rugby game.

The other reason it isn't popular is the cost of equipment.

That's why soccer is so popular. Hey kids, here's a ball and a few traffic cones. Kick the ball through the cones and if anyone comes near you, act like a sniper took you down. Have a go at it.

It looks like it was the right call....apparently the 10 second runoff doesn't apply to holding. That doesn't make much sense to me...I thought it was any penalty on the offense with less than 2 mins.

That's weird because I know the Cowboys lost this game against Washington because of holding in the last 10 seconds http://www.pro-football-reference.com/b ... 120was.htm ... edit there was a hold with 0 seconds on the clock meaning they didn't get to replay the down.

This is absolutely satisfying to see...just a joy to be witness to since the Pats quite possibly have the biggest litany of bullshit (no)calls that have influenced the outcome of games in their favor in recent history. Sucks doesn't it?

No that would have been the tuck rule!
Nothing more satisfying than seeing the Patriots lose on a call.......Sucks doesn't it.
