My best friend that i've known since i was 14 and i went up the long 4 hour bus journey from Cork. We've been fans since we were at school ten/vs but due to exams and life getting in the way we'd never been able to get to see them, missing the famous Millstreet (what i wouldnt give to have been at that gig)and Point gigs. He always says that no code is better then yield but sorry yield just stands out for me as a proper rock moment.
Anyways the gig, we'd both seen REM, U2, Radiohead, Counting Crows at gigs over the years but pearl jam was always that one that eluded us due to their 6 year absence from our shores.
When we heard that Paddy Casey was supporting ,from a security guard at the gig ,we were needless to say a little bit surprised we were hoping someone with a little more of a rock edge to really get everyone going. Pitty(he had previously supported REM in 99 and gotten boo'd off the stage).
So we went to the pub.
Expectations were high, we'd spent the previous months asking the same questions who would open and what would be the first song...severed hand or something older like brain of J? would they close with yellow ledbetter? as they had done in so many other shows and was eddys voice still up to it?
When Inside Job started all questions doubts fears and nerves vanished. Eddys voice was so clear and solid, if anyone had questions about the strength of his voice, they were answered in those first few seconds. The rest of the gig was a sheer joyfull frontal assualt on the sences. Breaking only briefly for a joke about a conversation with a famous irish singer and for a emotional highlight -Indifference and of course the confusion over boooom. The rest was all out rock without a hint of hesitation. They were on safe ground here 5thousand hardcore pearl jam heads and the ticket skalpers outside unable to sell any tickets as noone wanted to give them up, damn right too.
We were siting down back of the point dead centre, I know you are not suposed to stand up there and dance but we couldnt help it, every song recieving a sweaty armpit standing ovation. We couldnt believe it we had finally made it, we were finally at the gig we had waited so long to go to. This was a defining moment in our lives. Epic. I wanted to join you guys down on the floor so much and with my tenclub membership card in my pocket i stood wishing i had tried harder that day to get the 10club tickets (i still have issues with alocation-but don't we all).
And for the final encore everyone was up no security guard dared tell us to sit down , probably because in truth they were enjoying it too.
Hearing it all live for the first time with a really good crowd hammered home just how good a live band could be.
The opening seconds of Corduroy hearing the whailing vocals and crashing guitars of given to fly.
Does stone always look so focused? By the end of it your wondering where did time go, that was not 2 hours too short. A sweaty teeshirt burning vocal chords and the biggest smile youve ever seen, we walked back to temple bar(no sign of eddy) on a natural high thinking what could top that?with my friend mumbling something about Roger Waters and darkside of the moon live, while i was taking photographs of every yield sign i could find. The sign outside The Point saying the date and SOLD OUT in big letters as everyone walking passed taking photos.
Better live then on any album we concluded.
thanks PJ

Just got back into the states last night from my first trip to Ireland.
The show was fantastic, and the overall trip was just amazing. I really can't believe how beautiful Ireland is, and how nice all the people are, even to us Americans.
In regards to the show, I met some pretty cool people in the very long, and confusing line waiting for the fanclub tickets, and wristbands. It seemed nobody knew how it was suppose to work, and what should have been a very easy process was very draining. I guess you'll have that with it being the first European show to kick off the leg.
I had planned on picking up my tickets and trading them for seated ones, since I didn't realize there was a special pit, and didn't want to have to worry about coming/going since you can't drink inside the arena part. However is it was such a pain I just waited it out, chatted it up with other pj fans, and kept the GA ones which worked out great.
As others said, there was a nice pit that had more then enough room. One could easily get < 5th row if you had shown up around the time they allowed us in early. The fanclub eventually got packed as it got later in the night. Also, as the night went on, more and more people without the tenclub bands were getting in the pit, and by the end of the night the pit was really packed, still probably not as bad as it could be. They were supposedly checking to make sure they had the bands and saw many being turned away, but it didn't seem very hard to get into the pit once the show started.
Setlist was great I thought, although wish it was a tad longer. Most the suprises weren't that much a suprise. Since you could clearly hear the soundchecking from outside the venue.
One cool little thing was right around the time the doors should open, a bunch of us noticed somebody looking out through the glass door. None other then Eddie. Once people spotted him, they started chanting Eddie-Eddie. He then sort of looked suprised and jumped on his skateboard and skated off inside the venue. Prob freaked out the regular GA people, since it was the side 10club lined up, so they couldn't see what was going on. It was cool though to see him tear off on his board.
The poster was so-so. I picked up one for me and my friend but might dump mine on the bay, because I'm not sure I'll frame it. The posters did not seem to sell well at all, and you could prob get one up until the 1st encore at least. I assume because of the GA nature of the show. It was a pain to hold onto, although my wife was nice enough to do it for me.
Didn't see any unique shirts, or other posters such as the Klausen ones forsale. I couldn't believe the amount of merchandise they were selling. Maybe it was because it was the first time in Ireland in forever, but I think everybody in the venue must have got a shirt. I tried to pick up 1 a few times and just quit because the lines were so slow, and crowded.
Stunk you couldn't drink in the arena, but oh well, gave me a good chance to hang ou the smoking area and meet some real cool Irish and English people.
Overall great trip, wish I had longer to see the country 7 days wasn't really enough.
Oh here's my video of leash at the point. Not sure why, but it seems most shows I go to, I think to take a video when this is played. Wish I would have got education or something instead. :( Oh well.
Hey spaceboy, don't think I met you. We did meet SOMEBODY from Boston pretty early in the day (I was with newagehippie, from Kentucky) but I think he was looking for a ticket so it probably wasn't you.

so the first gig i'd ever been to was PJ at the point in oct '96 and the 1st song played then was RELEASE...which i'd hoped they might have opened with on the nite...i must admit INSIDE JOB was indeed a surprise! but after begining with 3 glorious numbers from the best album of 2006.......i couldnt blieve that ANIMAL, DO THE EVOLUTION and GIVEN TO FLY were played in such a quick raucous fashion.....we we under 30 mins into the gig yet i was drenched i sweat the skin on the palms of my hands was all shrivalled, as if i'd placed them in a bowl of water for some time!!
Corduroy.......Betterman.....Black....Daughter....Alive....Indiffrence.....I was in a state of unparalled adulation....yet some how in the back of my mind i knew that this gig was indeed goin to live up to the hype that was all over this very forum and indeed my own wee ginger head!! as it was the 3rd time i'd now bore witness to my favourite band of all time...all of which in the same venue...last wednesdays will forever stand out slightly more so than the rest...why?? i dont know!! maybe LEASH helped!!
i like all of u here are nutty bout this band and i cannot wait for the gig in PAris in 11days time........as im missing the start of college for it...and i've only gotten round to bookin my flights and hostel tonight...all for under 100euro...sweet ass!!
sadly we had no BABA O REILLY........SONIC REDUCER.....NOTHINGMAN...and starangly had NO CODE, BINAURAL and RIOT ACT completely ignored which saddened me a little bit.......anyway heres hopin gay ol parieeee will be slightly different!!!

I think Paddy Casey did ok, considering people from outside ireland were bashing him before ever even hearing him! We were unfortunately over by the medics station when he was playing, but I could clearly see the crowd rocking to his set!! Yes, I kid not! A bit Hypocritical I thought, or maybe the bulk of the crowd were just a bit more open and didn't care.
All my favourite singers have stolen all of my best lines.
My wife and I flew into Dublin Tuesday AM and loved the city and more importantly.. loved the people we met!
Before the show we hit the Temple Bar and met Damian and shared a few pints. My wife and I hung on his every word as he told us about some other shows he had attended (pearl jam and others).. and on his advice, we just rented U2 Live at Slain (sp?) castle.. the crowd was everything he promised. We made a new friend and he proved that Ireland's best trait is her people.
Shared a cab to the show.. a sea of people in the smoking area where my wife and I killed some time as we soaked up the scene and people. We made our way to our seats (didn't opt for GA seats)... fell into amazement when we found them. First two seats in the first row of the first section next to Mike's side. Our first time on Mike's side... Both Boston shows on VFC along with Albany and Boston 1 this tour were on Stone's side, so it was a nice change.
As for the show... omg, watching the crowd from above was amazing. The crowd was sick... jumping up and down from the front of the floor to the back. Not at all like other GA shows we have seen in the past where the first 1/4 jumps and the rest stand still... the entire floor front to back was bouncing, singing and having a fantastic time. Best crowd we have ever witnessed.
Only drawback was when we jumped to our feet during the opening song (Inside Job).. the guard stationed next to us quickly ran over and made us sit down. It wasn't until after the show that we learned a fan at a Smashing Pumpkins Concert was killed at the venue (I believe by falling over the balcony) so it was understandable why the venue was nervous.. but still a bummer.
The show flew by... must have a curfew in the venue because it felt like it clocked in at about 2 hours. While the setlist may not have been long.. it was filled with fantastic moments and was solid begining to end. The band obviously fed off the crowd frenzy.
Highlights for us:
1) Encore #1 - Indifference-->Black-->Crazy Mary-->Alive. Indifference and Black were amazing with the crowd participation tops! Beautiful version of Black.. left us speechless.
2) Getting to see the 'AC/DC' intro to Severed Hand instead of the pre-recorded track. I loved it when I heard in on the Cinci boot and was psyched to get to hear it live!
3) Boys are Back in Town: Nuff said
4) The crowd, the seats, the venue.. all simply amazing!!
We feel blessed to have been part of that special night. We just got back to the states and I have not had a chance to read the other fan views yet... I am sure if some out there look at the setlist or the length of the shows they might not realize how amazing or special that night was.
1991 - Warwick RI
1994 - Boston Garden 1
2003 - Mansfield 1
2004 - Boston 1 & 2
2006 - Albany, Boston 1, Dublin Ireland
2008 - Mansfield 1 & 2, EV Boston 1
just back from barcelona, great show but not a patch on Dublin
what a gig,one of the best I ever been too,I was thrilled they played education but as someone else commented earlier, the responce from the crowd for the song was not great.got loads of pics & clips which i will post soon,I also got to meet mike the day after the gig, what a cool guy,we ended up chatting about phil lynott & thin lizzy
speaking of lizzy here is a clip of the boys are back in town enjoy

Lovely review - glad you could join us . Black really was special, wasn't it! And the crowd were probably the nicest crowd I've ever seen at a rock concert... and soooo young too. I think the majority seemed to be teenagers.
Will, where did ya meet Mike the next day? And what was he saying about Philo?

He's a singer/songwriter. Actually pretty fucking huge in Ireland and I'm sure he can sell out the point himself. I suppose he's similar to David Gray with catchy babylonesque tunes... but about ten years too late to be interesting. It was a really strange choice of support but I get the impression that it seems to have been a last minute kinda thing. It was never announced and, although security told us when we were in the queue, we didn't really believe it til he came on stage though. The crowd were quite scary at first but he'd a good sense of humour about the whole thing 'at least yas aren't throwing stuff' and people soon warmed up to him.

Yep, the point is 8000 standing, 6500 seated. The astoria was about 1600 I think.
Yeh, David Gray was huge here long before anywhere else but, even though Paddy's similar, like I said he's too late to be interesting really.

bigger than I thought, site? fbi?? what is this, are you a foreman on a work-site or what
...........perhaps this paddy's not too late, since david Gray, these sentimental, soft guys with their acoustic guitars havent stopped springing up--ray lamontagne,Blunt(thats all he's getting),jose gonzalez and more.
.....................................................................pearl jam have really picked a bad time for me, there no question Id have gone dub at any point in the last couple of years but this year...bah!

Yeh, I did, lol. There are some photos back on this thread I think. But yeh, Paddy's been big for a couple of years now I suppose but he's not so sentimental... rather more like the livelier acoustic songs with a bit of an Irish feel but he had a full band at the point (more like David Gray meets The corrs, lol, I'm probably not doing him any favours here ). I'm sure he might have a myspace you can check out
Lol, ahhhh the confusion Al and RR... Rita, I meant 6500 when it's fully seated cos it's not always a standing venue. Al, I believe it's 8000

i like all of u here are nutty bout this band and i cannot wait for the gig in PAris in 11days time........as im missing the start of college for it...and i've only gotten round to bookin my flights and hostel tonight...all for under 100euro...sweet ass!!
sadly we had no BABA O REILLY........SONIC REDUCER.....NOTHINGMAN...and starangly had NO CODE, BINAURAL and RIOT ACT completely ignored which saddened me a little bit.......anyway heres hopin gay ol parieeee will be slightly different!!!
au revoir mes amies!!!!

I actually quite liked him - some of the tunes were spot on...

Yeh, David Gray was huge here long before anywhere else but, even though Paddy's similar, like I said he's too late to be interesting really.
Wow, it's hectic here this morning  The site was broken into over the weekend and it seems like the fucking FBI are here . Talk about fucking dramatic. Sites are broken into all the time - that's what insurance is for

...........perhaps this paddy's not too late, since david Gray, these sentimental, soft guys with their acoustic guitars havent stopped springing up--ray lamontagne,Blunt(thats all he's getting),jose gonzalez and more.
.....................................................................pearl jam have really picked a bad time for me, there no question Id have gone dub at any point in the last couple of years but this year...bah!
Heineken
did you have a gathering of people back to yours ike you were planning(I seem to recall)
I thought it was 8000 altogether!!!!
Lol, ahhhh the confusion Al and RR... Rita, I meant 6500 when it's fully seated cos it's not always a standing venue. Al, I believe it's 8000
