This was the first of four 30th Anniversary celebration gigs at The Fillmore in San Francisco.
This was the first time in 12 years that The Call of Ktulu has opened a show. The last time it served as an opener was on November 23, 1999 in New York, NY during the S&M gig at Madison Square Garden.
This was the first time in over 20 years that the full version of No Remorse was performed.
This was the first time in 19 years that The Shortest Straw was performed in the Bay Area. The last time it was performed in Northern California was on September 24, 1992 at Oakland Coliseum.
This was the first time in over a year that Leper Messiah was performed. It was last performed on November 21, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia.
This was the first time in over a year that The Day That Never Comes was performed. It was last performed on November 16, 2010 in Adelaide, Australia.
This was the live debut of Carpe Diem Baby.
This was also the live debut of Hate Train... a song that didn't make the cut for Death Magnetic.
This was only the third time that the band has performed an acoustic cover of Nazareth's Please Don't Judas Me.
Metallica brought up a lucky Met Club member named John Dent to jam on Wherever I May Roam.
John Marshall came out and joined the band on Sad But True. For those that don't know, John filled in for James in 1986 after he broke his wrist skateboarding and after he lit himself on fire in 1992.
While Apocalyptica set up their gear, Robert Trujillo performed an impromptu jam on Cliff Burton's famous solo (Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth.
Apocalyptica provided strings on No Leaf Clover.
This was the most unique performance of One... the first half was performed by Apocalyptica with James providing vocals and Lars, Kirk and Robert joined in at the "Darkness" bit.
A man who needs no introduction... Jason Newsted joined the band on Harvester of Sorrow and Damage, Inc.
Bif Byford of Saxon performed a cover of Motorcycle Man with Metallica.
There was a mini four-song Diamond Head set featuring Sean Harris and Brian Tatler.
This was the first time in over two years that The Prince was played and only the sixth time the song had been played since 2004.
This was the live debut of It's Electric.
This was the first time in 21 years that the full version of Helpless was played.
This was only the eighth time that Metallica performed the full version of Am I Evil? since 1984.
All of the special guests joined Metallica on stage for Seek & Destroy including Jason Newsted, John Marshall, Sean Harris, Brian Tatler, Bif Byford, Apocalyptica, and the Soul Rebels Brass Band.
Metallica performed 17 songs off of nine albums and three non-album tracks: Kill 'Em All (2), Ride the Lightning (1), Master of Puppets (2), ...And Justice for All (3), The Black Album (2), ReLoad (1), Garage Inc. (4), S&M (1), Death Magnetic (1), and three non-album tracks

Wow, what a good way to put things on sale. Kinda wish another fan club would do things like that.

Agreed! I had such a wonderful time at the PJ20 festival, but I'll tell you what.... the Metallica shows last week were on a whole other level. From the way the shows were set up, the pre-show contests and events, to the setlists each night with the special guests who came out for one song sometimes. I sincerely hope that Pearl Jam attempts to do something for their fans like this.

I was fortunate enough to be at Alpine Valley and two of the Metallica shows. Both were amazing and of course had a very different concept. We know about Alpine Valley; In Metallica's case, they wanted to make it sort of a "private party" with clubbers. Each night featured pictures of their career as well as video messages ranging from actors and sports stars to musical legends and peers, such as Rush, Aerosmith, Lemmy and Jimmy Page in which they were congratulating the band. Videos and pictures were shown between sections.
U2 deserves a special mention, as they did sort of a joke by visiting the psychologist (similar to Metallica's Some Kind of Monster). The Edge traumatized because of how fast Kirk was, Bono about James' singing and so forth, really funny.
Nights started with a band playing Metallica's covers with metal instruments. Really really cool! Afterwards, Jim Breuer had a stand-up comedy set, while also hosting a couple of contests:
* Metallitrivia, in which contestants had to prove their general knowledge about the band
* Name that riff, in which the contestants had to guess the name of a song from a riff snippet
Every night there was also a section to talk about Cliff Burton; from his dad to his best friend and other musicians shared their own histories with Cliff, really emotional. Then there was the openers; from Apocalyptica to Death Angel.
Something I really liked is how informal the setting was. The band members would show up since the beginning to talk and introduce sections of the show. Instead of their usual openers, they just informally showed up on stage and started chatting and joking before playing. From saying: "we are the house band tonight" to James playing a snippet from One. They were very talkative throughout the shows.
On top of the amazing guests, Metallica asked fans to send short videos via YouTube showing their musical skills. One fan was invited on stage per night to perform with them. Night 4 had one fan, plus a couple which played Master of Puppets at their wedding.
At the end of each night, they released balloons from the ceiling, each including one or more commemorative coins. Each night had a different color, hence the coins, ticket stubs and one skull shirt model changed colors accordingly: green, yellow, silver, red.
They also featured a small museum and changed the Fillmore's decoration so it would feature pop-art pictures of all band members through the history of the band.
During the days and night off, clubbers organized different events. I attended a fans picture at Alcatraz where clubbers brought banners and flags; in one off night, there was a gathering with a cool Latvian house band performing Metallica covers and their own originals. Some clubbers also jammed to Metallica songs after that band. The bar was packed! There were other events but I was not able to attend.
Finally, they had a lottery in which the winners were taken to Metallica's headquarters; winners got to see their rehearsal room as well as how everything works with the band and the club. Lars was there for a while and ended up having a BBQ. I wish I won that :(
There is no perfect fan club, but both 10c and Metclub are really close to that. Would be cool for both organizations to look at each other's wins to take ideas and improve their offerings.
I feel fortunate to have experienced the 20th and 30th anniversary of my two favorite bands. Will never forget how cool 2011 was!

Excellent review and you had me until the bolded part. Be honest now - these days, I wouldn't even put the Ten Club in the "average" category. It's light years (pun intended) away from the MetClub which has some flaws from time to time but very rarely and nothing (and I mean NOTHING) to the level of the ticket pre-sales debacle that comes with every PJ tour.

i emailed the met club and they replied saying that the left over merch will be offered to met clubbers first, so looks like i'm out of luck unless either they have not sold them all in a certain time period, or somebody offers to buy a t-shirt for me, and i'll paypal them the money.

I've listened to the first show 3 times since I downloaded it last night. I went to bed with it on.... and woke up to Seek and Destroy playing. The mix is great! Wow is all I can say. Metallica really did a fantastic job with these 30th anniversary shows and give their clubbers excellent value for their membership. The only fanclubs I've ever been in that were worth a hoot are Tenclub and Metclub.

Only half-way through it so far but it is just awesome. One of the best boots I've heard. Sound is great and the performances are spot on. And to think we've already got night #1 less than 2 weeks after the show. Pity all bands/fan clubs can't be so good in organising their anniversaries...

Howsabout we wait to see how Pearl Jam distributes these shows before getting all complainy. The fact that the Canadian boots are available points to some sort of special release for the Alpine Valley shows. I will download these Metallica boots right away, but in the back of my head I'm wondering if they will do some cool physical release. Then won't people be bummed that they feel compelled to buy the same shows twice!

as far as i'm aware metallica only release digital download format, on the other hand in this situation for these shows, they may well release some sort of set, whatever formats who knows, as far as the pj20 goes, the fact that the canada boots are already available, and not the alpine shows leads me to think that they must also be doing some sort of special release... and again whatever format who knows. and maybe hopefully pj are timing it right because they've already had a few money spinning products out there, and with xmas around the corner, they realise the average fan is skint(ish) and will wait until after the new year.. who knows, time will tell i guess

Agreed! I had such a wonderful time at the PJ20 festival, but I'll tell you what.... the Metallica shows last week were on a whole other level. From the way the shows were set up, the pre-show contests and events, to the setlists each night with the special guests who came out for one song sometimes. I sincerely hope that Pearl Jam attempts to do something for their fans like this.

thats good news, is PDT Time on the west coast of usa. so that'll make it 9pm uk time if i'm correct, think i'll go get me at t-shirt.
It's light years (pun intended) away from the MetClub which has some flaws from time to time but very rarely and nothing (and I mean NOTHING) to the level of the ticket pre-sales debacle that comes with every PJ tour.
thanks for this review, its great to get a better insight as to how things where, sounds like it was a great week, not only the shows, but all the extra activities too... makes me wish even more that i could've been able to afford a trip to these shows.
What shirt or merch did you want? Let me see if I can get you one and you can paypal me. Just need to see what the total in my cart is at the time to make sure I can afford it all.

Then won't people be bummed that they feel compelled to buy the same shows twice!
as far as i'm aware metallica only release digital download format, on the other hand in this situation for these shows, they may well release some sort of set, whatever formats who knows, as far as the pj20 goes, the fact that the canada boots are already available, and not the alpine shows leads me to think that they must also be doing some sort of special release... and again whatever format who knows. and maybe hopefully pj are timing it right because they've already had a few money spinning products out there, and with xmas around the corner, they realise the average fan is skint(ish) and will wait until after the new year.. who knows, time will tell i guess
oh no, the bootlegs must've been ......... sabotaged
WHich is super retarded cvos i thought James' voice now was fucking best ever, maybe he peaked a few years ago and is just getting old now.
