Lastly, what the fuck did he play from foxymop???

He said: "Uh, we've got tape rolling, so uh if you wanna turn this room into, you know, a choir, we'll see what we can do with that...." And he showed his thanks afterwards for the best US chorus of "No More" so far...

Regarding tales of his daughter, and I'll add more from my notes tonight, go here, 4th post, and sure, why not bump it over all these inane Given To Fly posts: http://forums.pearljam.com/showthread.php?t=280944

Same thread for Foxymop, post 10.

    Cheers!

I am flying from St. louis to LA on Friday and will be attending the show on Saturday. This fanview is making me crazy. I've been trying to keep this trip in perspective ever since I completely wigged out and dropped a small fortune on the auction tickets but I'm going to lose my mind waiting to get out there. This airline controversy is REALLY inconvenient and I'm not even flying American Airlines. THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to say to the couple in front of us, who were 1st in line to get inside on Tues., who we chatted with, glad we got Zippos! Hope you had as much fun as we did.

  • 12 hours since I heard the Mr. McCready showed up and I still can't believe that the one show I didn't go to in the Bay area was the one that the greatness shows up at. This will not happen in the future.

I am still basking in the afterglow of the amazing night. I noticed a pretty good amount of people around us (Row F Orchestra) bailed after/around Society...wrongly thinking that Hard Sun would be the end. I still can't get over how hard those three guys rocked Watchtower. The high has not worn off yet.

ok, so I didn't have time to read through all these posts, but I'll throw my two cents in there, not really knowing if what my review details has already been discussed or not. enough disclaimer!

I guess I can sum it up in 1 word: WOW.

I've been to about 20 shows now, and this one was probably top 3... can't beat the first row center spot I wrestled my way into at Sporthalle 01, and it's hard to beat Eddie and Bono singing RIFW... So I'll put it a solid 3. Although it’s pretty much a 3 way tie for first. And a further note, I had the last row in the balcony, so basically the worst seat in the house, and it was still AWESOME. Small venues are sooooo fucking awesome!!!! Anyhow, Liam was really awesome to start with, and totally rocked hard core. I’m a huge fan now… Eddie started out a little slow, mixed up some lyrics, had to restart a few songs because of some cob webs from the night before… but really got going after the first few songs. I was really supprised by the remarkable beauty and simplicity of the into the wild songs… I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they were played magnificently and with great passion… we even got to hear some little back ground stories to the songs too…. It was a really memorable night, and I have to say I will never forget it….

Anyhow, this may get quite lengthy, but here goes....

    1. Walking the Cow - really good start, got him warmed up...
    2. Around the Bend - Ed got lost after the first verse, and played the same cord about 20 times before stopping and saying "I totally forgot where I was... I got into that same warm tropical place I wrote the song and got totally lost"
    3. I am Mine - started talking about how he was depressed ... or hung-over from being up late. said he felt a little off. I couldn't tell if he was hung-over, drunk, high or other... but he was in RARE form. He totally beat the shit out of his guitar on this song, I'm supprised the strings lasted.
    4. Masters of War - talked about how the young republicans in the crowd last night wouldn't sing along to war protest songs, said he must not have been doing his job... after the song, he said that he should have scared away most of the young republicans in the building.
    5. Dead Man Walking - amazing. really soulful, and his tenor really poured over the striking guitar riffs (this was a theme that occured to me many times last night, ed's soulful and brooding voice was palpable, and was a really great counterbalance to him thrashing the shit out of his guitars.)
    6. I'm open - talked about how this song was about being open to god, or at least being open to that thing that is just slightly below women. it was a short song, but beautifully preformed...
    7. MOTH - this is where Ed got really talkative, and really went onto really deep tangents. First I think he was sort of apolagizing for his preformance, even though by now he was totally rocking. he said he never really liked hackey sack, but it was much quieter than what he was doing on stage. he also then said we could take off and watch a bad drum circle, and he then turned his guitar over and played a little drums for us. He then talked about the torture museum in amsterdam, and how there were these devices used in the 17th century for torture... I think he got off course here, and started talking about the 'horse' which would pull your legs downward while your legs were split with a wood frame which eventually split you in half... so he then got back on track, and said he should possibly have to wear the 'flute of shame' which was an instrument attached to a huge mask which you had your hands attached to as if it were a flute if you were a bad musician.... he hoped he wouldn't have to wear one after last night, and said if he messed up this next song he would give up (or something to that effect).. but MOTH was played beautifully and he really hit his stride. He also said he maybe just play 15 minutes of maggot brain for us instead of his set...
    8. Broken Hearted - said this is a song he wrote and that he hoped no one was in this situation
    9. Setting Forth - just introduced as a select few songs from 'Into the Wild' soundtrack. - these following songs were really true to their album form, very melodic and intricate... very well executed by Eddie, and again a good combination of his soft and powerful voice melting over delicate yet blistering guitar rythems - simply amazing, I was really blown away by these songs.
    10. guaranteed - talked about how his daughter really loves the into the wild music, and knows emile and sean... she thinks that Eddie has a bear at the studio when he goes to work, and she really loves to dance to the songs... but wondered about the 'don't come closer or i'll have to go' lyrics. What did they mean? Ed explained that this was Chris singing from the movie, and not him, but she still wondred what that meant, so Ed said that Chris was talking to the bear. He said 'all you parents know, you have to think quickly on your feet.' Later he also added that it was great that he has seen quite a few todlers and infants at the show with headphones and ear plugs at the shows (I saw his daughter at the Toronto Show with Bono - so he's been there too) He also saw a woman breastfeeding during a show in the crowd, and he loved it... Anyhow, he also said that he recalls from years ago, when he... well when Jill breastfed his daughter, he hasn't fed her in years.... when a baby is breastfeeding they get a little drunk or euphoric, so he was happy to see little babies tripping out at the shows....
    11. no cieling
    12. Far Behind - ROCKING guitar on this one. He was now really cooking
    13. Rise - brings out Luke the Uke
    14. Millworker - uses Luke's older brother
    15. Soon Forget - introduces as perhaps the other end of the last song
    16. Driftin - thanks the fans for allwing him to 'get lost' in himself and drift around all over the world and come back to a welcoming family (or something like that.)
    17. Foxy Mop - said he would play that one, but he doesn't have an accordian with him. says 'a spanking, that's the only thing I want so much, so much' with a laugh
    18. You got to Hide Your Love Away. - said that this was another sean penn song, and that it was the only beatles song left he could cover. also said it was 'lennon's dylan song'
    19. Trouble - really well done, very melodic and a great cover
    20. Picture in a Frame - dedicated to a special couple in the crowd (Sean and robin?)... but if any couples thought they were special, he dedicated it to them too.
    21. Forever Young (can't remember much here)
    22. Porch - absolutely blistering.... both with his voice, and how he really tore into his guitar strings. really top form eddie, and a good end to act 1.

    23. Society - with Jerry Hannan - really sweet, and a great mixture of eddie and jerry singing. Jerry has more of a raspy and earthy voice over eddie's more flowing and soothing tone here, so they were a great juxtaposition.
    24. Pulling into Santa Cruz - by request from a crowd member... eddie says, 'sure why not' and mentions that there is a big difference between Vancouver BC and the bay area... and responds to a shout in the crowd about how it's much different than Edmonton (or calgary? Montreal? can't remember)... where everyone tries to one - up each other (I think about this moment, he was sort of tired of people shouting stuff at him between songs - earlier he said he was annoyed that no one came up with good comments or questions, and how he was disappointed since it was a college campus) Anyhow, so he says he just had this vibe coming into santa cruz and wrote that song the morning of the SC show (he could have been pulling our leg) He also said that if we sang along the chorus well, it would be worth recording.
    25. No More - introduced by saying that he won't say anything more about the song (since he had mentioned it 3 other times, that the previous night crowd wouldn't sing along... and asked that we really sing along well, so that we could be like the 'chorus' to the song - or maybe he said we could be the 'chorus' to the santa cruz song...) anyhow, he was moved by the crowd response and sing-a-long.
    26. Arc - dawned the lab coat, and tore through this song..... really moving. it was amazingly beautiful, and I think one of the best things I have ever heard. anywhere. amazing finish to act 2.

27 Sean Penn song - a little roast to sean penn, I would call it ‘acting hack.' I won't try to get all the lyrics, but maybe someone can help fill in the blanks.... (eddie also mentioned earlier in the show that he enjoyed Sean’s response to finding out Jill was prego by saying “ that’s great, just wonderful, I’m so happy for you…. now who’s the father?” Eddie went on to say that it was nothing about the woman he was in love with, but just goes to show you how much of a fucking ass hole sean penn is…. He then recanted and said, ‘he’s one of the greatest assholes I know.’

Sean, the name of a boy or a girl
Penn, the name of a writing utensil or a state prison
Thank god he's not just another, just another, just another old fucking acting hack

(the rest of this is really fuzzy, but Eddie mentions movie characters he’s been, including how well he played a coked out lawyer, how it was a natural role, how he dressed up like a priest and beat up Robert diniro)
Thank god he’s not just another, just another just another fucking cock sucking mother fucking Hollywood asshole fucking acting hack.

28 Big Hard Sun … complete with fog, rocking guitar and drums and also really amazing singing, everyone was having a grand olde time… eddie was dancing all over…
    29. Yellow Ledbetter – mentions he is supported by the band, he’s got Stone’s guitar, Jeff’s rug, Matt’s drumsticks, but he laments that he has nothing from Mike. So he says he made a call, and had something fed ex’ed down last night… and mike is brought out on a dolly to an enormous response from the crowd…. At the end of the song, mike starts his solo, and is joined by Liam Finn and they totally rock out the solo… Mike at his best, completely ripping through the cords and blasting the guitar ending… very fast, uptempo, blistering… it was awesome. Ed joins on drums, and they all ROCK OUT. Mike finishes solo in typical melodic form
    30. Watch Tower – blew my fuckin mind man. This was an amazing song, and everyone just tore through it and really blew it up…. Amazing guitar by Mike… the true master!!! Ed blows through all the lyrics without fail and with amazing clarity… Liam is in rare form as well, throwing drum sticks here and there and totally kicking ass…. WHAT AN END!!!!!

    Post show :
Met up with fellow ten clubbers after driving my g/f back to the city, and coming back to Berkeley to get some stuff signed. Met some really cool people, and ran into Sean Penn… shook his hand, thanked him for into the wild (I’m bummed I didn’t say ‘Hello Lady’ to robin… Also got a signature from Jerry Hannan on a Sniper booklet… so then I’m hanging out by a group near the bus, and turn around and –poof- eddie appears out of nowhere!!! I thank him for the show, along with a hefty throng of other fans…. And I get him to sign the same booklet as Jerry… how kick ass!!!! (Sean wouldn’t sign it, boerns)

post post show, had some wine and some smoke, hung out with Smitty, and was afraid of the security dude... really chill evening with some really great fans... awesome!!!

    That’s about it. Cheers!

  • somebody yelled out "vitalogy" and ed said "ok here's the first song" and then "have you got 45 minutes" then something about "8 minutes of noise" and then he did the spanking voice and laughed.

I also think he looked offstage, maybe to mike? That's just me though.

just a couple of things here:

he said he'd always been prejudice against hackey sackers until now because of the two day drum circle outside his bus, he said hackey sack wasn't so bad no because at least they're quiet.
he didn't say he hoped he wouldn't wear the flute of shame, he thought that was needed for the drum circle.

he didn't say he loved seeing breast feeding, just that he loved the fact that a baby was high at his show.

foxy mop- he said it was 8 minutes of nice, then did the voice and asked about the accordian for "bugs'

and he was totally hungover, I met him night 1 and he was druuuunk

    awesome review though.

I can't believe I actually saw two people sitting when mike was playing AND people left before hard sun, alot...can you imagine how they feel now?

Haa.. yea I saw some empty seats around me pre-Hard Sun and pre-Mike... I thought the same thing. They must feel pretty shitty. I said something to the dude next to me and he responded, "I learned never to leave a Pearl Jam early, and not until they start taking the shit off the stage.. "

I bet the people who left are not very big fans, because if they were, they wouldn't have left early due to knowing how EV/PJ typically have 2 encores for each show.

He then recanted and said, ‘he’s one of the greatest assholes I know.’

    is she pregnant again?

i'm still in shock that last night even happened!!

my sis and i saw mike back by the bus when we were arriving at the venue, now mind you i am blind as a bat, but i can spot that man a mile away haha we saw him driving off in someone's car, he looked right at me, like shit, i'm busted lol

i kept it a secret save for one other friend, which was fun...and even though i knew he was in town, i thought maybe he might not come out on stage. despite all that, i STILL lost my shit when he came out. it was out of control. and seeing ed on drums? WTF? DAMN!!

these shows have been a true gift.....just freaking beautiful :)

    :D

it really was....i kinda felt bad that i did tell you just because it would have been fun to surprise you as well! but just the timing of having you on the phone, you would have known something was going on. surprised my jaw didn't hang up the phone when it dropped hahaha

the fact the show happened so close to home just adds a whole other level of goodness to it too....and hearing the crowd take over YL in some parts, hearing mike shred in that hall, sounding SO damn good. i'm still high from it all, and i don't feel like coming down for a long while :)

PineappleAna and Chiquimonkey! It was really nice meeting you guys. Sounds like you got to meet the man last night :-) And I love the fact that you shared the "secret". I went apeshit when Mike hit the stage. I got tipped by someone earlier though that a "special guest" would be at the show tonight. Never thought it'd be Mike. I did however, think secretly that the whole band might come out or something. I know, it's crazy.

I can't believe I got to experience Santa Cruz, Berkeley 1 and Berkeley 2! Most intimate one was Santa Cruz but Berkeley shows just simply kicked ass as well. Of course, the last one being just insanely beautiful.
Will I be seeing you guys in LA?
was nice to meet you as well! we didn't get a chance to see ed last nite, but i can safely say i am well acquainted with every bench and tree within the zellerbach radius :p lol

it was fun to share the secret for sure....i don't think i could have kept it to myself, i would have had to tell SOMEBODY, so i'm glad i could spill it to ana! i can't describe the feeling seeing mike come out on stage....i haven't seen teh whole band play since '06, so even having just mike out with ed, gave me that wonderful familiar feeling. like seeing an old friend or something :)

true the santa cruz one felt really intimate, just cuz that venue was microscopic! hell they couldn't even fit ed's whole name on the marquee lol the show last night was exquisite. i give props to the 1st berkeley show cuz of 'parting ways'.....wow!

won't be going to LA sadly, but perhaps it's for the best...dunno how much more goodness my poor little heart can take! haha

I wish Liam would release one of his sets from these shows! he and EJ simply rocked out!! And you're right, he's so sweet. Really cool guy. We got to meet him and EJ in Santa Cruz.

Agreed on all fronts. The one disappointment with Liam's live CD, EJ was not on it ... not that she's the be all end all to his stuff, but, she adds another great layer to the music that seems to put it over the top.

That's exactly what I thought. If you go to Liam's MySpace page, they have live videos there I think from SXSW.

I saw that entire SXSW set on DirecTV's channel 101 (HD music channel), funny thing is, on this night, he was a last minute fill in for the Lemonheads as Evan Dando was sick ... after seeing that, I knew I had to get to Berkeley early to catch them.

I just noticed EJ has their Letterman appearance on her myspace. (note, as does Liam ... and he's got a pretty cool interview on his site)

It works out how's it's supposed to work out ... sometimes.

I had Tues TM tix first (and so bummed that morning, Mon gone in the blink of an eye) and just started to doubt, to worry, to freak. OK I needed to go Mon as well, just in case. Just in case. That's the 10C night right? OK I had better get my ass there.... (And again, thank you 10C member outta the blue!)

Wait, hmm Sat in Santa Cruz? Hmm. He's a surfer, that might be more his element! Saturday night, college town too. Ocean nearby. Oooh, I had better get my ass there!

And I'm so happy I got to see the trifecta.
But I had the right tickets all along!
