Somebody over on IORR just turned me onto the "Philadelphia Special '72" bootleg, some of which is on the Unreleased Decca Live Album, but the whole thing is really good. The version of Gimme Shelter on there is probably one of the best versions, rivaled only by the version from Brussels '73 (the first show, not the official bootleg, the unofficial one).
Taylor's guitar work is unreal here. So is Keith's rhythm playing. The whole thing is unreal.
I got this a few years ago. A friend's dad is still a huge Stones guy and he put me on to this bootleg blog. This is a great, great show.

Is there any debate as to whether or not these guys are the best band ever? With all due respect given to every other big band... does anyone come close to paralleling these guys when you factor in their catalogue act and 50 years of rock and roll service?

Too bad Grohl was so timid while playing with the Stones!
But seriously, he did a great job interacting with them!
I saw Anaheim 2 and LA 1.....both shows were great, but Anaheim 2 was much tighter. It was great to hear Shattered! If they'd do away with the 2 new songs, I wonder if they'd throw in a few more variables each night?
They should have gotten Dave to also play on "It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It)", it was great when the Foos played it with Jagger on SNL. I thought the Jagger/Foo Fighters version was better than any Stones live version as it was played similar to the album arrangement and not the straight forward Chuck Berry style rocker like the Stones have always done it. When I first heard it live it took me a minute to even realize what song it was, when Mick started singing the chorus I realized what it was.

There should be no debate. The stones are the best band ever! As a side, I sat near Grohl at the stones show in Newark last December. He was rocking out as much as anyone in the arena. My cousin and I talked to him for a minute after the show and he was telling us how much he loved the stones and how he thought the show was great. My cousin started the conversation with him, I had no clue who we were talking to for a minute (I like nirvana but I'm not a fan of foo fighters).
He was very nice -- seemed like a cool guy.
Four songs for Taylor last night, including Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Sway. That's more like it. Far Away Eyes worked into the rotation too.
1. Get Off of My Cloud
2. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)
3. Paint It Black
4. Gimme Shelter
5. All Down the Line
6. Far Away Eyes
7. Sway (with Mick Taylor) (Vote In Song)
8. Doom and Gloom
9. One More Shot
10. Can't You Hear Me Knocking (with Mick Taylor)
11. Honky Tonk Women
12. You Got the Silver
13. Before They Make Me Run
14. Midnight Rambler (with Mick Taylor)
15. Miss You
16. Start Me Up
17. Tumbling Dice
18. Brown Sugar
19. Sympathy for the Devil
20. You Can't Always Get What You Want
21. Jumpin' Jack Flash
22. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (with Mick Taylor)
Definitely sounds better than the Licks and ABB tour versions, which were too fast and bouncy, they got the groove back into this one. And of course Taylor nails the solo portion of the song.
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
Backreading, I have seen that more $85 tix will be going onsale closer to show date. Would they be offering them the day of the show? a day or two before? I'm interested in seeing the boys in Toronto, but don't want to lose my shirt.

It wasn't that good. The writer came off as a snarky hack writer (in the vein of Jimmy McDonough and his Neil Young book), and he spent very little time actually discussing the music that went into Exile. We all know the debauchery that went on at Nellcote and the sex/drugs etc etc etc...this book lacked the rock'n'roll...
Don't waste your time on it.

That was quick!
Thanks for the review. Interesting you compared it to Shakey. I didn't enjoy that book very much and at the end of it, I found myself skimming when things bogged down to get the read done: very dry and lacking insight.
So, what is the quintessential Stones book to read then?
Four songs for Taylor last night, including Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Sway. That's more like it. Far Away Eyes worked into the rotation too.
.
I was there last night. First time I ever saw The Rolling Stones. INCREDIBLE. They were amazing and I screamed as if I were a groupie and it was still the 60s.

I've heard really bad things about that book but I wasn't going to say anything just in case you liked it. "Life" by Keith is great if you haven't read it.

I bet it was the shit. Looked like a great show on paper and the few videos I've seen.

I've heard really bad things about that book but I wasn't going to say anything just in case you liked it. "Life" by Keith is great if you haven't read it.
All the bad things were probably true. Technically, the writing was fine - the author built to appropriate crescendos and starting/stopping points...but what he was saying was either uninteresting or just speculation and in the end, provided little that I didn't already know. It's just not worth reading.
As far as good Stones books go...I don't really know that there are that many. I've read several, and generally speaking, unless they're by one of the guys (I agree about Keith's Life - it was good), most authors write about the Stones with their ultimate point being, "man, those were some crazy times..." which is not only uninteresting, but also cliche and done to death. Most Stones fans know that they did drugs heavily, that Mick slept with everyone, that Bill Wyman was stiff but also weird as hell, that Keith should be dead 10 times over, while simultaneously downplaying or skipping over the shit that made them great.
Yes, Mick was a sex-crazy prick at times and Keith was an unreliable lout...but the fact that they ended up here, 50 years later, still playing and writing such fantastic music over such a long period of time speaks to that unique trait of greatness that true geniuses have. When I think of true genius, I think of obstinate visionary spirits imbued with natural talent, trampling over others in the process, serving themselves first to the injury of others, all in the name of a legendary end they always seemed predestined for. Isn't that truly what makes the Stones interesting? Don't you instinctively throw their names in the catalog of other bullheaded, single-minded but historic talents? Isn't their surviving all the sex, drugs, and personality wars - which so many others from that era were casualties of - far more interesting than the drugs and sex themselves?
Obviously, a book that sings the praises of the Stones in that way wouldn't make for a very interesting read (who wants to read 300+ pages focused simply on how great something is?). Unfortunately, too many writers about the Stones have taken that difficult task as a sign that they should focus on the other shit, presuming that this other shit is what makes the Stones interesting, legendary, iconic. Too few writers have been able to accurately convey the import of their significance for music without getting bogged down by the ancillary shit that has gone on around the band.
Consequently, I can't say that I've read too many books about them that are really that interesting or worth reading, and yet I continue to do so, in spite of myself.

Have you checked out the 50th Anniversary book yet? I've been meaning to, but haven't gotten around to it. I think it's mostly pictures but I hear it's really cool. I haven't even seen Crossfire Hurricane yet, since I cancelled HBO a couple of months before it aired. It just came out on DVD and Blu Ray yesterday (here in the US, been out longer elsewhere) and I have it on the way from Amazon.

I have not, but I'm working through "The Rolling Stones: Unseen Archives," which is a cover table book full of pictures. It's alright.
I have HBO, but missed Crossfire. Have to catch it later.

so the shows are clocking in at 2hours and 20mins on this tour...right?
anyone know a start time?
thanks!
In Anaheim last Saturday, they came on about 45 mins (8:45pm) after the ticket start time (8:00pm).
They were 45 minutes late in Vegas too.
Saved me cash in the casinos, but cost me lots at the just-a-little-overpriced-mgm-drink-vendors. A break even deal!
thanks good people!!!
looks like they are planning to end the show around 11pm which works for curfew times, i suppose
no sense rushing into the venue when the beers are cheaper in the parking lot!
I should probably unsubscribe to the damn site. They tempt me daily.
I have that box, it's pretty cool. I mean, "Ladies & Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones" is an amazing concert film, I'm talking about the box set extras. "Stones In Exile" isn't the greatest rock doc ever, but it's still pretty interesting, and there are some good interviews and stuff in there. Some other somewhat interesting stuff. The coolest thing (other than the movie itself) is the Montreux rehearsal footage, but I think that's on the regular version as well and not just the box set. The book is really nice, and the box itself is really cool.

Ok, starting to get nervous here in Toronto. I'm hoping to score a pair of the $85 tix for tomorrow nights show. I'm just confused as to where or how exactly to get the tickets. I've checked the Stones website often the day before and day of for previous shows, but the $85 link never seems to go live, and then by 7:01 all the ticket links dissappear and a sold out link appears. Has anyone here scored the $85 tix on the day before or day of the show? Were you emailed a link or did you just happen to hit the Stone's website at the right time.

I got this a few years ago. A friend's dad is still a huge Stones guy and he put me on to this bootleg blog. This is a great, great show.

Really cool.
Is there any debate as to whether or not these guys are the best band ever? With all due respect given to every other big band... does anyone come close to paralleling these guys when you factor in their catalogue act and 50 years of rock and roll service?

But seriously, he did a great job interacting with them!
I saw Anaheim 2 and LA 1.....both shows were great, but Anaheim 2 was much tighter. It was great to hear Shattered! If they'd do away with the 2 new songs, I wonder if they'd throw in a few more variables each night?

There should be no debate. The stones are the best band ever! As a side, I sat near Grohl at the stones show in Newark last December. He was rocking out as much as anyone in the arena. My cousin and I talked to him for a minute after the show and he was telling us how much he loved the stones and how he thought the show was great. My cousin started the conversation with him, I had no clue who we were talking to for a minute (I like nirvana but I'm not a fan of foo fighters).
He was very nice -- seemed like a cool guy.

Definitely sounds better than the Licks and ABB tour versions, which were too fast and bouncy, they got the groove back into this one. And of course Taylor nails the solo portion of the song.
Best setlist so far...

I was there last night. First time I ever saw The Rolling Stones. INCREDIBLE. They were amazing and I screamed as if I were a groupie and it was still the 60s.
I've heard really bad things about that book but I wasn't going to say anything just in case you liked it. "Life" by Keith is great if you haven't read it.
I bet it was the shit. Looked like a great show on paper and the few videos I've seen.
From what I understand, $85 tix have been going on sale the day before and day of the show.
Consequently, I can't say that I've read too many books about them that are really that interesting or worth reading, and yet I continue to do so, in spite of myself.

anyone know a start time?
thanks!
In Anaheim last Saturday, they came on about 45 mins (8:45pm) after the ticket start time (8:00pm).

Bought this box set from pop market: http://www.popmarket.com/?cid=nl%3A6750 ... om%20IMAGE
