A late review from the DelCo Daily Times:

    http://www.delcotimes.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1675&dept_id=18179&newsid=15361028&PAG=461&rfi=9

    Rock Music Menu Spotlight

Eddie Vedder has always regarded Philadelphia a favorite city to play, and some memorable live highlights were made here. Monday was no exception, as Pearl Jam saved its best show of the tour for the sold-out Wachovia Center.

The energy was nearly tangible, with an audience on their feet for 2½ hours as far into the upper decks as could be seen. Vedder was gracious in his commandeering of the show, bringing the pace from wildly frenetic to a subdued whisper. At times he was drowned out by the sheer volume of the masses, overpowering the sound on some of the well-known hits.

For the casual fan, there was the requisite "Betterman," "Even Flow" and "Last Kiss," but for the hardcore, tour tracking nut, there wasn't much more you could ask for (except the white elephant of "Leash"). You got the "man" trilogy, "Sonic Reducer" and "Around the Bend."

More than half a dozen covers dotted the set, most strikingly the always emotional "Crown of Thorns," by Mother Love Bone, the band from which Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard were in before Pearl Jam, dissolving it after the tragic death of singer Andrew Wood.

The girls from opening act Sleater Kinney joined in for a faithful rendition of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon," and later on what has become a Pearl Jam staple, Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." For the latter, the houselights were brought completely up, daylight bright, as Vedder banged on and destroyed multiple tambourines before ending the song in a somersault at mid-stage.

Guitarist Mike McCready looked like a coalesced Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen, flying around the stage, pointing theatrically into the audience before almost every strike on the strings and bounding off of monitors.

He ended the night quietly and artfully with "Yellow Ledbetter," the best way to calm the amped crowd before buzzing into the night about where this show ranked in the slate of renowned Pearl Jam shows.

The consensus must put it somewhere near the top.
    "Information is not knowledge.
    Knowledge is not wisdom.
    Wisdom is not truth.
    Truth is not beauty.
    Beauty is not love.
    Love is not music.
    Music is the best."

i'm sorry. i just finished reading the entire thread (it is long!). so, apparently the mosquito bite girl isn't a sob story...just a girl with mosquito bite boobs? well, i'm glad she's not sick anyway.

i wasn't at state college, but if anyone feels like re-telling that story, it'd be cool.
The show was actually Hershey, PA 7/12/03 - I was there, and it was funny as hell. Ed went off.

Here's the exact quote from Five Horizons.
    http://www.fivehorizons.com/tour/cc/t2003p3.shtml

Throughout much of the show, a female fan up front is flashing the band. Ed comments, "You know there's some little coquette up here who thinks she's getting us excited by pulling her top up and showing me absolutely nothing. Hey look guys ... look at my mosquito bites from this summer. It's all fucking girls gone wild bullshit. If every girl who pulled her top up educated herself and voted! And by the way, little lady, I'm just not turned on by that little thing. I'm into much harder core stuff. I actually like to shit on little girls heads just like you; that's what turns me on," leading to 'Whipping

uhhhh haha care to clue us in what your making them? how are you gonna be sure it gets there? and thats really cool about your daughter!

I won't make them something because that can come across as a little creepy (don't know what's been put in the ingrediants! and no, I won't send pot brownies!!!) I live in NYC and there are a ton of great 'treat' shops, so I'll buy something and send it along. If it gets there, great. If not, maybe someone at the post office will enjoy :)

I was spoiled as my first PJ experience was State College 5/3/03. I don't think any show can ever top that. Extraordinary. Those who were there know what I'm saying. However, Philly was fun, Ed was animated, and they opened up an old trunk of songs.

  • I was one of the few who really can say he was at J.C.Dobbs when Pearl Jam first played here. I talked about it on these forums a long time ago. No I didn't appreciate it then. I had no idea who they were. I was there to see my buddies band.

Anyway, since that day I've been to alot of shows. You guys in Philly know what we had to go thru to see a PJ show back in the 90's. They never played here because of ticketmaster. The closest they came was Brooklyn or Hershey PA.

The hands down best concert I have ever seen by any band was P.J. at State College in May of 03. No this wasn't as good as that. Maybe I'm biased because I met my future wife at that show...but regardless...it was a close second. I've seen every show in N.J. and almost every one in M.S.G. since 94. This beats them all.

I'm not going to get in a pissing contest here with guys from New York but I'm also not going to let them downplay the significance of this show. It was pretty goddamn special. The crowd was magnificant.

To all of you guys in section 114, thank you, thank you, thank you, for making this a memory I will never forget. Also thanks to Eddie and the gang for playing "Crown of Thorns". It's the first time i ever heard that live in 15+ shows. I've heard Drop the Leash many times live and quite frankly I dont see the speciality of the song. Maybe other people haven't....oh well.

Anyway, I'm really sorry for myself for not meeting more of you in the parking lot before the gig. I had a midterm at 3 to 5 pm and got there late. To those I did meet, you guys and gals are beyond all expectations that any band could hope for. Fuck man you are the coolest goddamn people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I just hope I can meet more of you in the spring.

    Truly yours,

    Zoot
  • Any one know if this concert is coming out on cd or only on a download?

no offical word yet, but if i had to speculate, based on the response it got i'd put my money on an offical release on cd

    yep, a wicked trilogy. heavenly.

Yes, Harvest Moon, Hard to Imagine and Crown of Thorns was a wicked trilogy, but for me it was the close to the first set that just set the standard for the amount of power a band can generate...Once, Bleed For Me and Blood...can't imagine a stronger close to a set!!

And then there was the "Man" trilogy too...and that's not even counting the enormous power of the two songs Sad and Alone back to back...all in all, die hard fans could dissect this show a million different ways...it was that kind of a legendary night in this band's lore...one for the ages from a band for the ages!! Thanks Pearl Jam. Thanks Ten Club. And thanks to so many of my fellow jammers for being the best rock fans there are.
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!

  • You know, its close to a month later and I'm sipping on some beers listening to the boot tonight. What a show. What a fucking show. Did you ever feel like the band put on a show especially for you...like they asked you to put together the setlist? That night had everything...even In My Tree and Crown of Thorns....amazing.

They are so good. Such a special band. Might I also say I'm glad I'm from Philly.........great crowd, amazing energy...SUPER loud.

    BUY THIS BOOT.
    I'm a cunning linguist.
  • Okay, so I'm listening to the boot AGAIN and was reminded of a conversation I had at a party last weekend. I met someone for the first time (who had also been at the show) and we were talking about the chills-down-the-spine excellent set list. It was nice to talk in person to someone who "got" how amazing that was. I have to be honest ... I don't often get that chance.
