Anyone heading to Michigan for the Winter Classic this weekend?

What a great way for the NHL to expand its brand by having two of the most esteemed franchises squaring off in The Big House. The weather forecast looks great, so there is little chance the NHL should have any problems.

I'm guessing Detroit is also looking forward to the financial boon of having so many out-of-towners in the city this weekend to watch the alumni games at Comerica Park as well.

For once, Gary Bettman finally appears to be pushing the league forward in the right direction.

Fucking killing me. Killing me. Virtually all winter NCAA sports take a "finals/winter" break from early December until just after Christmas (roughly). Usually, its the NHL and NBA that fills that gap until college basketball and hockey start up again. Half that is gone. Expectations were high for the Wild this year, with the Suter/Parise signings...and here we are.

    Fuck.
I hear that....Try being an Oiler fan! Watching these kids destroy the AHL and RNH lighting up the world juniors after bottom dwelling for years....ugh.
BUT....I'm sure anyone following this thread has heard about the offer made by the NHLtoday.....
...sounds promising.....again. I told my friend i wouldn't get my hopes up cause every NHL offer is promo'd as a major concession...then there's a statement by the union that is was still bullshit after we get our hopes up. I then read that this offer was leaked by players in the know, and the NHL had kept quiet about it at first....and that some people are calling it serious enough to go to a player vote. Supposedly the owners have told Bettman cancelling the season is not an acceptable option.
Players met by teleconference today, union/league tomorrow, in person on sunday.... Drop dead timeline - Jan.11 agreement, Jan.12 training camp, Jan.19 begins a 48 game 'regular' season. we'll see.
(not so regular....sucks that the Oilers first cup win in 20 years will have asterisk in the record books ;))

NHL offer was 300 pages? 300 pages !!! That's alot of bullshit legalese

    more rumors

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck- ... --nhl.html

On Friday, Dan O'Neill, the NHL’s Vice President for Arena & Event Operations, sent a memo addressed to all "Arena Technical Coordinators, Video Goal Judges and Video Goal Technicians."

It contained – in stupefying details, to the layman – information about technical changes implemented for "the upcoming season," specifically mentioning that the NHL and NHLPA are continuing to work toward a resolution that, if reached, will necessitate that arena personnel are "ready to go."

An off-ice official that requested anonymity told Puck Daddy on Saturday that O’Neill’s email was “the first time all year” the officials have received this type of correspondence from the League.

Another factor for optimism: déjà vu. During the last shortened season, off-ice officials received a similar notice and the NHL was “playing games in less than two weeks," according to the source.

This type of chatter has picked up lately. Teams have been sending messages to their managers and staffers “all hands on deck” messages for the last few weeks: Be prepared to head back at a moment’s notice. In some cases, they’ve been false starts, as the NHL and NHLPA talks have teased a resolution. But that’s what’s been communicated.

So this sounds like a good sign the NHL is gearing up to (finally) start the season. But there’s really only one person that can validate those preparations. Oh, what’s-his-name … Don something. Old guy. Likes baseball. It’ll come to us …

Next meetings to end NHL lockout likely on Wednesday
Gary Bettman strode through the doors of the National Hockey League’s Times Square office on Tuesday night, bringing a cautiously optimistic message with him for one of the few times since the 108-day lockout of the players began.

Speaking at the end of a 30-minute meeting with Donald Fehr and the NHLPA’s bargaining committee, the commissioner seemed to indicate that talks on a new collective agreement had settled into the last, hard push to a resolution.

    okkkk

co-worker's buddy works for the firm who is handling the pension aspect of the deal

    very big roadblock

    says Fehr is an asshole

deal should get done by FRIDAY

20 teams in playoffs.....48 game sched

sadly Bettman is sharp as a tack :fp:
i post on the board of a band that doesn't exsist anymore .......i need my head examined.......
  • I don't even know if I want them to salvage what's left of this season. 48 games crammed in here will lead to some pretty bad hockey. We saw with the NBA last year how shitty the quality of games were when you jam so many games into such a little time. Then again, once the NFL is over I'm not going to know what the hell to do with myself so it would be nice to have some hockey to watch. The whole thing sucks.

I agree with J, deal will be done by this weekend, I'm thinking sun. Owners told bettman cancellation of season is unacceptable. Players in Europe have started to return back to the states. Season prob begins around jan 18. Lets drop the fucken puck!!!

And 81, by the time your suspension is done, we'll have hockey and us rangers/flyers fans can do it all over again! :corn:

You know it's bad when it's Jan 3rd and already looking forward to baseball season. But yeah, it will be nice to have something to watch. I'm just going to feel like such a chump because I know I'll be back watching every Hawks game and going to a lot of games. What a bunch of assholes.

Exactly. I'm so tired of getting my hopes up. And for what? Too many games crammed into too few days? An asterisked Stanley Cup (which is what it will be for whoever wins it)?

On the other hand, I've got to think that there will be some pretty inspired players, at least for the first few weeks. There are a lot of frustrated players out there. Every interview I hear from a player is pretty depressing. The most common phrase "it is what it is," coupled with an eyebrow raise and a sigh.

The Wild beat reporter, Michael Russo had this to report today, as I'm sure beat writers for every team are writing:

"Down in Edina this morning, more than two-dozen NHLers skated with purpose as they hope we’re days away from a new CBA and training camp. “Cautiously optimistic” was the way most described their feelings (we’ve heard that before), and as one player said, there’s some relief because at least we know we’re a week away from some kind of conclusion to this madness – lockout ending or the season being canceled.

“I’ve been the eternal optimist, so in the grand scheme of things, with how close everything really is, I can’t imagine that it’ll blow up and they’ll cancel everything,” said Wild forward Zach Parise. “It’ll be pretty stupid to do that.”

It's really weird, the disconnect between what many of the players are saying (I just want to play) and what's being represented at the negotiating table. I'm not taking sides with players or owners (I don't know enough about the details to really dig in), but it's just frustrating to hear this from guys like Parise, and then read again about how Thursday, they failed to meet (despite a plan to). Now more mistrust?

I'm trying to be positive, because it is really, really exciting to think about hockey potentially starting in 2 weeks (albeit shortened hockey).

  • I almost hope Bettman cancels the season. Fehr thinks Bettman is bluffing. This is a fucking game to Fehr. He just wants to be known as the guy who saved the players their guaranteed contracts so they can play one or two fantastic seasons out of the gate, negotiate a monstrous 10 year deal, and coast all the way to the bank.

He's playing a chess game and the players are his pawns. And if this season gets cancelled, so do all the previously tabled offers, and the players go back to the drawing board of getting even LESS. Fucking brats. But they are stupid brats for allowing Fehr to take them on this personal crusade of his.

Another thing lost is the momentum that was building in the Winnipeg-Minnesota rivalry. Those were some great games atmosphere-wise in both venues. You could feel that intensity building between the teams...now...fuck...who cares?
