It's great to see so much R.E.M. love on these boards. Great to know that my fellow PJ fans have such excellent taste in non-PJ music. I think PJ got a lot from R.E.M. Not so much musically (although I see the connection for sure), but certainly in the way they've approached their careers and the connection they have with their fans.

Damn! One of my bucket list bands to see. :( Hopefully they reunite in the future. This news just killed my day streak of good things happening.

FUCK. REM was a band I thought would last forever. I really liked the last album. I thought the last two were really great actually. Bummer.

p.s. I will be at the reunion tour! 8-)

Reading the band's statement really put things into perspective for me. I guess for most of us here, we love music so much to the point it hurts. I'm still very sad, but glad they went out on a high note.

Probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite band of all time, and I never got to seem them live... This is such a shame.

Yesterday was a bad day. R.E.M. was my favorite band together with Pearl Jam. I have all their albums and dvd's. They will be missed but at least they did 15 studio albums and two great live albums (Live at the Opympia being the better). If there's someone who doesn't have that album please buy it. I have the vinyl/cd/dvd box and it's worth every cent.

I was fortunate to see them play live twice in Helsinki. First time during the Around the Sun tor and the second time during the Accelerate tour which was a lot better and I was also near the stage that time. I haven't seen Pearl Jam live so please come to Finland!!

  • Having never really been a HUGE R.E.M. fan , this news just... Really screwed up my day... On one hand, it's good when bands are able to live so long and end in such harmony, on the other, I guess I expected them to always be around...

That's the first thing that came to my mind. Also, Stipe wrote a handful of songs to record with Cobain in '94 but it never happened... would love it if he released those on a solo album.

    Oh my heart,
    Oh my heart,
    Oh my heart......

I am really sad about this today. Before Pearl Jam came along for me this was the band to follow. I had hoped that someday I could follow them on tour for a week like I did for PJ in 2010 but they have given me some amazing gigs including shows at Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond wbich I'll never forget. Today my headphones are in and I'm working backwards through the albums. Great that PJ played It Happened Today last night and that for me makes the boot essential. I will miss having them around but the music lives on and is there for people to discover for years to come. I wish them nothing but the best of luck for what they have given us. Goodbye for now guys....

For me, had there been no R.E.M., I would never have known of Pearl Jam, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Smiths, The Who, The Kinks, Leonard Cohen, Foo Figh... You know what? If it wasn't for R.E.M., I would not have known music. And without music... who knows.

R.E.M. made me who I am.

Sad, sad news. Still finding it hard to believe.

However, absolutely AMAZING to see so many positive words said about R.E.M. on this board. Thank you. There is often too much slating of artists online nowadays, it's like a breath of fresh air reading these comments. PJ fans are amazing.

I started with "Document" and it was a wonderful first introduction. Murmur was my next adventure with R.E.M. and still remains my favorite record from them.

Life's Rich Pageant is another that deserves to be heard by all.

My uncle found a trunk full of vinyl and Document was in it and I listened to it and loved. That's the only album I've heard by them.

Newch, since you've already heard Document, I would agree with norm here.

Start with Murmur and blaze your trail through their discography.

Yep, that's what I was planning on doing. I always start from the beginning with bands/artists I'm interested in (except U2, I started with Joshua Tree).

    spinning murmur now...

this news has bothered me more than i thought it should, and i think a lot of you here articulated why for me: i thought they'd always be a band. (and sure they may eventually tour again but this probably means no new albums.)

i never followed them as closely as i have pearl jam, and yet, all the sudden here, looking through my CDs and records, i have like a dozen or more REM albums and love them all. i don't follow them start-to-finish like i do with most bands i love, it's just that i love listening to their records. that's all. and that's more than enough.

and i was super-excited to love their last two, so i guess i am glad then went out on a high note.

and ohbytheway, pearl jam still has eleven-odd years to go to surpass them with regards to longevity.

and oh yeah, i have to give them credit for basically inventing my favorite genre of music.

    VIVA REM!
  • Im not really a fan but im gonna take a wild guess and say theyre doing it gain money for a new tour in a few years.

Every band breaks up only to tour a few years after. Its common sense really. Sure they may stop making albums but theyll tour again.
