At least they knew when to call it a day. I wish U2 would think about taking a long break.
Bono said they're going to take a break.

However, it's kinda nice that they called it a day on their own terms with no falling out or any hostility. They just collectively decided they've given enough and it's time to move on. I suppose there's no better way for a band to end.
Collapse Into Now is such a fantastic record, it's a shame we'll get no more. I feel lucky to have seen them twice, in 2005 and then in 2008. The latter show absolutely blew my mind.

I hope you get this message but your not home...I will be there in just a minute or so...
I want to go but I want to go with you.

I've had enough, said enough, felt enough. I'm fine, still in it.
Well ain't that a son of a bitch. I feel like I've just been kicked in the nuts.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
I hate to hear this. I started liking R.E.M. before Pearl Jam, but I must admit I haven't kept up with them since the 90's. I loved New Adventures In Hi-Fi, but haven't cared for any of their output since. I still haven't listened to Collapse Into Now, even though I bought it 5 months ago.
So, while I haven't been following them closely, it was always good to know they were out there, and I had always planned on seeing them live one day. But I guess I missed out. If I had actually kept up with them over the past 15 years instead of just listening to their 80's and 90's stuff I would probably be more crushed.
"See a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down, a smack 'em yak 'em!"
I'm seeing Pearl Jam in Calgary tonight. $20 says they play an R.E.M. tune.

Sad news. Collapse Into now is a great album and I was looking forward to more like that in the future, but I guess their decision not to tour in support of it should have been a red flag.
Thank you for Automatic for the People, part of the amazing treasure trove of early 90s albums.
I have plenty of time to catch up on the back catalog now, of a band I've never listened to enough (aside from the album noted above).

thats bad news, but the good point i guess is that it seem it was a group decision and not a nasty bust up.

To be completely honest, I never even considered this to be possible. R.E.M. just seemed to me like a band that would be forever, or until one of them passed.
This is sad news, and for me personally even more sad as I was hoping to one day be able to see them live.

I've loved the last two albums.

They were soooo good live
Damn
Thanks for all the great music. Maybe Ed will pay hommage to them tonight by throwing in an REM tag.

Ever.
Thanks for many great live shows and some of the best songs / albums in music history!
Fuck that's depressing.

+1 I've got that horrible end of an era feeling going on. dammit.....
