Im not really a fan but im gonna take a wild guess and say theyre doing it gain money for a new tour in a few years.
Every band breaks up only to tour a few years after. Its common sense really. Sure they may stop making albums but theyll tour again.
I think you're way off target with this.
I dont. There hasnt been a single band that I know of that broke up but didnt tour soon after. Hell, even led zep toured recently with jason bonham.
Unless your ignoring the touring apsect and just focusing that they broke up, I can safely say im right.
husker du's breakup seems pretty final. the replacements, i doubt, will ever play again. hell, the fucking beatles' breakup seemed pretty damned final.
maybe REM tours again, maybe they don't. but given their career i think they're owed the benefit of the doubt as far as being sincere today in what they say.

I can safely say you're wrong - CCR, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Jam, Talking Heads, ABBA, Traffic all broke up, but never toured again "a few years after"*. There are loads more, many of which never got the chance to reunite because of the death of band members, which I didn't include.
However, given your belief that there was a "recent" Led Zep "tour" (seriously bummed I missed out on this news...........!), you pretty much invalidated your own argument anyway.

The Smiths, Stone Roses, neutral milk hotel, The Jam, The Clash, the real G'n'R...
mind you, it is a lot easier to think of bands that did reform than the exceptions that didn't

It was sifting through thirty years of songs that prompted the split. They asked themselves what direction to go next, had no answers so called it a day. This release would have come out regardless of any decision.
There was a singles album out and greatest hits tour around 2003 and the IRS label cashed in with an early years compilation later. I think the new one is less singles based and a little more retrospective. This split is not a cash in or some way of rekindling interest to spark a planned reunion. I would be amazed if REM had that little credibility.
Like a book among the many on a shelf...
Dublin 02 Arena - 22/6/10. Belfast Odyssey Arena - 23/6/10. London Hyde Park - 25/6/10. Berlin Wuhlheide - 30/6/10.
Manchester MEN - 20/06/12. Manchester MEN - 21/06/12

Yes, IRS has released five studio albums through 1987... a b-side compilation... an alternative recordings compilation... and FOUR greatest hits packages (so far) - the first released two weeks before the first Warner Brothers album hit the shelves.
Warner had released ten studio albums... two live packages... and this will be their second greatest hits package.
Thought I would give this thread a bump as I've been listening to a lot of REM lately after their breakup. Collapse Into Now is such a great album to go out on, album of 2011 for me. Love these guys.

Yea I've been doing lots of catching up.
First I discovered Lifes Rich Pageant - 25 fucking years later. Possibly the greatest album of the 80s.
I've been enjoying Fables of the Reconstruction lately. Something about those songs just... is just beautiful.
Those early albums just grab you and you don't know what it is about them, but you just want to keep hearing them again.
Also enjoy about half the songs on HiFi, and I think Collapse is one of 2011's greatest and most criminally underrated albums (haven't seen it in any of these "Top 50" or whatever lists). I'd take it over the Foo Fighters album in a second, and I really like the Foos.

I'm sure most of you guys have heard this by now, but I was reading something a while back that was mentioning how the guys knew that they would be calling it quits for a while and that the cover of Collapse Into Now with Michael waving "goodbye" was supposed to be an indication that it was coming. I thought that was kinda neat.
Now if they could have only allowed us to give them a proper sendoff with one last tour... :(
just watched country feedback from the bridge school 25th ann.dvd
gave me the chills
so sad we wont here michael's voice in rem again, :(

What a completely joke... I stand by my Glastonbury 2013 comment earlier.
