Its like Alpine was a personal justification for me; the shows and experiences I had on that trip convinced me that I'm not as crazy and childish as everyone in my life thinks I am for dedicating so much time and money to this band....and now someone has told the story of 'why?'. I've already answered that question with "watch Pearl Jam Twenty", and will again many, many times, I'm sure..........thanks PJ, and Cameron Crowe :)

Ya can't say it much better than that
  • Just got home from the New York City Premiere....

WOW. I was absolutely blown away, this doc was so amazing, and so perfect. I got chills, and there were points a bit overwhelmed emotionally.

I could not have asked for anything more. Pure perfection. Hilarious, sad, and awesome.

Thanks Cameron, and thank you Pearl Jam for defying the odds and sticking together. Thanks for being my favorite band.

Here's to a life time of music ahead.

My favorite part was Ed transforming live on stage during Breath.

Just back from the showing at the iPic theater in Scottsdale, AZ (btw, seven sold out showings tonight, so why hasn't the band played here since 2003???)

Loved the movie. I'll echo what others have said, it was a walk down memory lane seeing the history because it's my history too. I remember every nuance of change, every hairstyle and set decoration, the evolution of the songs and band members through my 60 or so shows from 1994 on. It was great to see a flash of some familiar faces in the crowd, I can't wait to get the DVD so that I can stop the action and get a good look. The iPic theaters have these premium seats which are recliners and servers take your dinner and drink orders seat side. I was sitting there with my feet up, with my pillow, blankie and popcorn that the theater provides with your ticket and watching the churning mosh pits on screen, thinking about the days when I made that rush for the door to get to the rail in front of Mike and fought hard to keep my place. Wow, how times have changed. I'm such a pussy now!!

I was tapping my toes and bobbing my head through the whole thing, mouthing the words, trying not to sing out loud. When the lights came up the smile on my face would rival Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman. I thought there was a nice mix of old and new history, a good focus on the original core band members, and so many moments that remind me why I love this band. Yes, I would have liked to see more about the drummers, and there was nothing about Boom, but how do you fit 20 years of history into a 2 hour movie. Something needs to be left for the 30 year retrospective, yes?

When I left the theater all I wanted to do was talk about PJ and my hubby just wanted to go back to sleep (he crashed about 20 mins before the ending, damn recliners!) I put MSG 6/25/08 on in the car and now I'm all hyped up, need to get up for work in 6 hours and there's no way I'm getting to sleep anytime soon. Can't wait for Vancouver this weekend!

Thanks Pearl Jam & Cameron Crowe!

    Peace,
    KJ
  • LOVED IT. Got chills, got sad, got happy. I could have sat in that theater and watched a full week of PJ material. I'm not kidding. I wouldn't have showered and my girlfriend would have hated me - but I wish that movie was 166 hours longer.

One thing real quick: I just wish they would have put more of the Big 3 in the doc - Vitalogy, No Code, Yield - but that's what the book is for.
  • Like most of you - I loved the movie......

    Thank PJ & CC
Run away my son. See it all. Oh see the world.

Stone (in his basement ) 'Oh look theres a grammy!'

    Loved every minute of it!!!!
Though I think Im a pearljamologist there were still a few things I never knew about them, ie maniac driving into Eds brick wall at the front of his house.
It was funny, ie 'Fuck Jeff Ament!', boys in the van discussing Mookie Blaylock
It was exciting, ie Ed doing his climbing escapades
Very emotional as well; ie Release, Chris Cornell remembering Andy Wood
I had it all once I gave it back

One of the most amazing things i've ever seen.

I didnt get along to see a pearl jam show ever since berlin and im going mental over it.. i MUST see another show before this band decides to put their guitars on the rack.. thats the one bit im most afraid of i will die if it happens

I think the movie was great, i was waiting to see a bit more footage from after shows behind the stage, or a bit more of history that was missing to me.

from 0%-65% of the movie i was totally about to cry from overwhelming emotions
i think they lost it half way through the movie, it just lost direction and was a bit chaotic jumping between people and eras and they left a few holes or gaps open.

overall was amazing to see pj in a movie theatre, im so disturbed right now, i must see them again live in europe or i will cry.

i really hope this time the tours will be announced more ahead of time so it will give us time to let our job know that on the date X we are taking a holiday.

i really hope the bonus features of the dvd/blue ray will fill in those so much needed gaps

thanks pearl jam.. i think i became alive when i first got hooked on your music/art

  • Saw it in Plymouth, UK and was pleasantly surprised with how busy it was, there were very few seats left.
I've never known a cinema audience that was so attentive and quiet, or that had so many stay seated at the end until the film ran out and the lights came on.
As always, Cameron has done an awesome job and it didn't disappoint at all. Highlights were same as a lot of everyone else's - Stone's grammy discovery, Ed's fury at security, Mike's 'inner beast', Singles Party, etc.
Was awesome to see and hear it at the cinema, to experience it with that clarity of sound/picture that I strongly doubt by own TV will match... :)

Two hours never flew by so fast!

    Can't wait for the blu-ray & extras.

Oh and now I'm itching even more to see a live show as soon as I can!

  • loved the singles party footage. Classic
  • Saw pj in Cleveland. Family event, parents went. Mom saw pj in 2006. brother also there. Dad's first pj experience.

I thought it could have been longer. SO much good footage. surprised not much on Green River. Drummer situations handled well. Thought maybe after ticketmaster talk about how ten club sells tickets and perhaps scen es from destination weekend would have been included.

very good. Enjoyed it much. Want to see them live VERY soon after seeing the movie and I just saw them in Toronto.

    :D
  • Saw the 2nd showing here in Columbus at Studio 35 theater at 9:30pm last night (the 7:00pm showing sold out before I could get a ticket). Both the 7:00pm and 9:30pm showings were sold out and they added another show for tomorrow. I really enjoyed the movie, although I think the theater could have had the sound turned up a little more as it was sometimes hard to hear what was said in some of the footage (although that might have been because of the poor audio quality of the source footage in some cases). I noticed that in the trailer David Lynch is interviewing Eddie and while they did show David Lynch in the movie, they didn't have the scene with him interviewing Eddie. Maybe that will be in the bonus footage on the blu-ray version I just ordered.

I thought the segment about the Pearl Jam drummers was amusing, but I kind wish they would have gone into more detail about what happened with Dave. It seems they just decided to make it all a humorous bit and in that way avoid going into any details. Oh well.

In a funny coincidence, a guy who sat just behind me tonight was in the row just in front of me at last years Pearl Jam concert at Nationwide arena here in Columbus.

  • I saw it in Long Beach - fascinating, emotional film. My favorite moment: Release. I'll be buying this on Blu-Ray when I can afford it. 8-)
I'll wait for an angel, but won't hold my breath

Wow, that must have been truly special to hear that. Did you know in advance that it would be in the film, or was it a total surprise?

  • Love them that much more now! Thanks Cameron Crowe for making such a great film. It was good to learn about Andrew Wood, and see him being carried on by the band. Really sweet to see Ed talk about his friendship with Jeff and get choked up. So many funny scenes, Stone's coffee cup & grammy find! The footage of the MTV Singles party was a riot. Interesting footage of the Nassau Coliseum show & Bushleaguer, the band is clearly surprised by the reaction. So much material, so well put together. Looking forward to Vancouver!

Really great movie. I almost shed a tear a couple of times. Just one thing that I missed: no stories about the Avocado and Backspacer times.

    Thanks, Pearl Jam.

Were you at the 7:00pm or 9:30pm showing of PJ20 at Studio 35 here in Columbus, OH Gremmie? I was at the 9:30pm showing.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. Have you posted on here about your brother before, or has someone from the band or the director talked about the interview your brother did and that he died soon after? For some reason I think I heard about your brother before, but I can't remember where I heard or read about it. Maybe I am just imagining things.

saw the 10 p.m. show in long beach. i'm a bit biased but i thought it was fucking great - funny, informative, emotional, rocking. now i want to go to sunday's show in vancouver.

very cool seeing it in a theater. great group of fans and the sound was unbelievable.

    what a band.

Never heard the mccready blacked out on snl story. and ed yelling/singing breath at the security guard was priceless.

    thanks, pj.

    This film blew my mind.

I loved it, a lot. It made me more grateful to be a part of Pearl Jam and it's history, so thankful for having their music (pretty much on a daily basis, I can safely say that round here without too many sideways glances :) )

I always knew I was lucky that "my" band kept going, kept putting out music that seemed to change and grow at the same time I did. I had an idea that it wasn't always an easy road for them all. I am just profoundly grateful that they are still recording and touring. We Are So Lucky!

What an emotional rollercoaster. I got swept away and yea, sung, chairdanced, laughed, and yep, got watery eyes too. I really feel lucky to have known the music for all these years.

And of course....it has made it IMPERATIVE that I see them again, soon, live! Did that happen to you all? I can't wait to see them again! And I live a LONG way from Mexico....

Sincere props and thanks to everyone involved, not least: thank you so much Pearl Jam...

What a fantastic night! Never expected that the two Vienna screenings will be sold out!! :o
We enjoyed every single moment and time went by too fast! I've seen video footage of Release in Verona before but this was really extremely emotional! What a voice!!!! Now I'm looking forward to the Deluxe Edition DVD!!!

  • Needless to say, I absolutely adored it and have written it all down here

    http://www.newadventuresinhifi.com/2011 ... r-of-love/

Hope you like my review as much as I liked the film!
  • Not knowing them personally the music plays on emotions and that makes a personal connection. So grateful for it. The movie was AWESOME, stoked it got made.
  • I managed to control myself in the cinema, then cried like a little girl when walking back to my car. I thought it was absolutely fucking brilliant.
  • Watched the movie in Ljubljana (Slovenia). Just the feeling that something connected to my favorite band is happening in my country was a little surreal. The screening was full and the feeling prior the film was heart-warming for me. Then the movie...trip down the memory lane, goosebumps, goosebumps. Funny at times, touching overall, sincere and coming from a fan...
It is nicely rounded and I think it works for heavy fans and people who will just see it out of curiosity. I don't mind the focus on the early years but I feel the later years were a little left out. But, you know... maybe a good reflection on these years can be made at PJ40.
I am proud to be a fan, even if I am just a tiny fracture in the Pearl Jam community. This movie is something I can show to people who ask me: Why?.
A celebration of rock music, passion and overall - if you think how the stories form and break - life.
    Looking forward to the DVDs.
Now I am a little out of place again. Similar to an after-concert experience. Damn, I love this music. Always leaves me wanting more. Always scratching me on the inside. Well done, Mr. Crowe.
The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

What an awesome movie!! So many things I had never seen before, and didn't quite know the band's perspective on things, as we do now.

Loved the footage and discussion about the Singles release party! Loved the shots of Ed riding Chris' back singing Hunger Strike back in he day. Loved all their recent interviews about their history.

An absolutely beautifully made film about an amazing band.

Cannot wait for the DVD so i can geek out to this movie multiple times at home.

Thanks Pearl jam for an amazing 20 years!! Here is to 20 more!

Thank you Cameron Crowe for awesome film.
  • I was at the Belfast screening last night and absolutely loved the film. Having been 15 in 1991 - my formative years were spent with this band and I got misty eyed with nostalgia for growing up during such an amazing time for music.

I'm suprised no-one else has called this but for me, the best moment of the film was Eddie dancing with Kurt backstage at the MTV awards - what an amazing, genuine & private piece of film that we have been lucky enough to see many years later.
  • Saw the movie at Toronto, was amazing..for sure i want like 20 hours more stuff...lol..atleast Eddie came on stage at the end.
i hope will be played in Greece,so more fans can see it..

    Thanks PJ

That movie was one of the finest two hour spells I have ever spent in a cinema.

    It felt like ten mins....

couldnt fault it, even the drummers bit - I dont need to know about people falling out and why - it doesnt interest me - especially when we are celebrating a stunning 20 year career. Im actually impressed more than anything that they didnt air any dirty laundry...they were obviously internal matters and meant to stay that way...so to deal with the drummers in a light hearted way was fun.

sure im a fanboy, i was bound to love this, but even trying to be objective about it Cameron Crowe pulled off something very special...it helped that PJ seemed to have hoarded everything from their career and captured so much wonderful footage to help make it possible.

It was wonderful how it told a story and not a boring timeline. There was no - 'then we brought out no code, then we brought out yield, then we released live on two legs'......it was coherent, and gelled well....i loved every minute.

one complaint? It wasnt long enough, I could still be sat there now still enjoying it.......

Wow, wow wow. a real treat. Thank you
