When the 2nd mic was brought up everyone around me was sold on Cornell walking on stage, and it was actually funny to hear a collective sigh of disappointment when Mark Arm and Steve Turner took the stage to help out on Kick Out The Jams.
I was one of the ones letting out a sign of disappointment lol
I was one of those fans, too. I turned to my friend and said, "Well, that's not Chris Cornell or Bono."
Just for me I would have taken out a repeat (Alive, Porch...) and replaced it with Life Wasted.
They could play Porch every night and I'd be happy. I didn't hear it my first four concerts and have now heard it 4 of my last 5 and it pumps me up every time!

I should really take that Porch comment back because it was really one of the highlights... even on the second night where they had already performed it the night before it was awesome. One of the best moments that my wife and I immediately talked about after the show was how Jeff, Stone and Mike just jammed with each other during the solo section of Porch as if they were the only three guys in the room just having fun playing with each other. Magical moment.
I disagree with everyone about Kick out the Jams! Way better than a Chris Cornell or Bono cameo (but not better than Neil...)! It was awesome. I'm also biased because back in the early nineties when Grunge was at it's peak I was in a band that closed a lot of show with Kick out the Jams.
there is only one other time that I felt an overwhelming feeling of sadness at a PJ show, and that was in 2006 when I heard the opening bar of Man of The Hour and I realized how beautifully sad that song was, all of a sudden I just got choked up and felt my eyes get all misty. It was uncontrollable, really overwhelming.
Well shit, if that didn't happen last night during Light Years. I was fine until the chorus and then boom, I thought of my friend who passed away in July and I just stood there with that overwhelming sense of sadness, my eyes welling up, wow, couldn't move had to look away from the band, such a powerful feeling. Felt better in the second chrous but still couldn't sign the chorus or rock out.
Listening to Light Years from Buffalo this morning and it reminded me of this.

i'm pretty sure the fuckers who bitched about totd and chris at PJ20 had an influence on him not coming on stage in toronto ...
you're probably right and that is just a bummer to me.
That is almost definitely NOT true. You guys can't actually believe the band reads the message board closely enough, especially while on tour, for this stuff to have an impact.

The thing about Mark Arm is that he's got a great voice for singing fast, thrash punk songs. EV, Bono, and CC do not. Hence why Kick Out the Jams with Arm is BADASS.

assuming you are not being sarcastic ...
they, as in management, do read the boards ... it's why song requests get played and special dedications to cancer survivors are made ...
whether its to everyone's liking or in the way they want ... the band has always tried to make everyone happy ...
the TOTD / Cornell threads got locked and there were a few of them ... obviously, i can't say definitively and am purely speculating ... but there are grounds for it for sure ...

Management often looks at the boards, sure, but that's not why Cornell didn't come out. The occurrences you are talking about happen roughly once a year, it's not like every time someone posts a sad story Ed talks about it on stage, or a song gets played for them. I honestly think it's ridiculous to assume that Cornell didn't come out to play with Pearl Jam because of negative comments on a message board. There are high profile musicians at nearly ever show Pearl Jam plays - it doesn't mean they're going to come out every time.

I was at PJ20 and when he walked on stage he was very well received...the next day anyone I spoke to seemed pleased with Cornell being their. Picking up the tickets Friday night Cornell was sound checking and everyone seemed excited.
I think the bitching was by a few...anyone thinking it would be a normal PJ concert might be disappointed, I thought it would be more of a PJ event in the end. I would hate to think the band makes a decision based on a very small majority of their fans who post a message board when they are playing for 20 000.

I don't mean to start a debate, because I can see that devolving into something other than fun discussion, but I was at Alpine and think I would have enjoyed the Toronto setlist a lot more.
Plus I kiind of think the totd was to give those who attended pj20 something that may never happen again...totd has only played a handful of live shows...correct?

Missed out on night one and was a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see Neil (especially if it was a surprise to most of the band), but was in no way disappointed with tonight’s show. Started the day watching PJ20 at Ryerson and was fortunate to be in the same theatre as Neil & Ed. Pre-party at Loose Moose was great although I was shut out on the raffle again. As for the show, loved Go as an opener and Sad is one of my all-time favourites. To be honest, the whole set list was fantastic. One of the best ones I’ve seen. If I absolutely had to be a selfish spoiled PJ fan I would have loved to hear WMA, but there’s always Hamilton in a few days. Great crowd, great energy, great band. Thank you!
Notes on other posts:
- I did see Ed cut his thumb catching the tambourine, hope it’s no big deal, he has a lot of guitar playing coming up.
- Lindsay, I saw you get booted. I thought for sure you were going to slap that cop.
- Good on you to the guy for giving up the pick, and better on you to the guy for thanking him for it
- I can’t help but smile at the people complaining about the band playing 7 repeats out of 56 songs in 2 nights. Really? Is that something you feel the need to not only complain about, but post on the fan site? Oh well, freedom of speech and to each his own and all that.
One more thing, was I alone in thinking that the speech Ed gave before Light Years about “people loosing people in significant ways” was an unspoken nod to the 9/11 families? I also thought that about the Long Road opener for night one.
Thank you Pearl Jam for 2 great shows. My Notes from Night 2:
Go, Animal were absolutely smoking.
Ole was amazing. It's not going to be my favorite song, but the crowd was enjoying it.
The God's Dice/Deep/Garden trio seemed a lttle out of place. They fucked up God's Dice really badly, but Matt kept the drums going and they found their way back.
One of my favorite moments was Ed noting that Mike's Dad was in the crowd (sidestage) and how much his son meant to the band. Then they played Present Tense.
BTY - Mike's behind the head solo during EF was sick.
When Ed said, NYC means Neil Yong country the crowd went balistic. Then he said "Neil is working tonight and couldn't make it, and we all think he is scared of Mike", there was a collective groan from 19000 people.
Dissapointment quickly went away with a I got Shit/Cinnamon Girl combo.
Great great night.
Thanks to my new Boston friends for the tickets. Glad Brady kicked some ass.
Also was seated beside BD. Top shelf guy, and great guy to be at a concert with.
If this has already been answered, I apologize (so many pages up already though!)
Does anyone know who the "local" guy was that Vedder dedicated the song to? Anyone catch the name? I swear it sounded like someone I know, but it really wouldn't make much sense. Just curious...!

i think both nights complemented each other. Lot of down songs played first night. second night was all uptempo songs (except just breathe and last kiss).
lots of energy last night. eddie came out in the first encore dancing. lot of fans around me (row 24) dancing and enjoying the music. you can almost feel the energy in the air. The crowd was very loud and really into it.
light shows were an improvement over past tours. well done.

Oh haha...Yeah that wasn't what I heard at all from where I was. Cool, thanks
was our last of 3 canadian shows and by FAR mr. dream favorite. he is a long-time, solid fan...but definitely not a die-hard. he loves the hits and he loves the hard, heavy-driving songs. he actually called go as an opener...i didn't really think it would happen but we both LOVED it. hubby always 'complains' that pj opens concerts far too often with slow songs, he was NOT disappointed with last night, i think it's a real highlight for him of the 13 shows he's seen.
this was my 35th show and i thought it was great. i love rarities as much as the next die-hard but when you see a lot of shows, i think it's cool to have a more nostalgic show now and again, and that will be more hit-heavy. that said, any show that has i got shit is a winner in my book.
thank you montreal and toronto for being beautiful, friendly cities....great food and drink.....and for 3 fantastic pearl jam shows. great crowds, great times.....definitely going to be great memories.

Too right. Until next time!
115 bucks for half a haircut by a novice? I want my money back!
Erase Olé from this setlist.. and here you have a perfect show
1. It was awesome!
2. We were the first people to see this live.
3. I LOVED IT
So, it worked.

One thing I wanted to mention about both Toronto shows was just how incredible the band was and they seemed to be crazier than I've seen them in a long time. Matt, Mike and Jeff are always consistent and were great but Stone was just crazy rocking out on night 1 and Ed was just jumping and dancing more than usual I thought. Right away in night 2 with Go as the first song Ed was just insane. No matter what anyone wants to say about the setlist (even myself who wanted to hear more stuff from the last couple of albums) this was not a band going through the motions - this was a great band giving their all and it was awesome. No matter what the setlists were these were two of the best shows I've ever seen by them. Mind you we can also make a fun thread about the little musical mistakes (I just loved when Eddie gave Stone a "hey, what are you doing there?" look during Garden).
When they started Even Flow my first thought was that I'm pretty bored of seeing them play Even Flow but then Mike played most of the solo on the back of his head and it was just SICK. Great shows. Great band.
