I've been a die hard fan since '92. I own and love every PJ album (athough almost all except Ten and VS took a few listens to really grow on me). Last night I listened to this song and then watched the clip from Fallon, and I have to admit for the first time I was embarrassed for them. Harsh I know but hear me out.
I just watched the vid and listened to the studio version again loud, and here are my revised thoughts:
1) The vid does not do justice. It must have been a really off night for Ed. Speaking as a musician, that was a very poor performance. Sorry but I bet Ed would agree. Maybe he is sick or tired from the weekend. Rest of the guys were good, but I wish I could hear Mike better.
2) The track is actually a pretty good song when I hear it loud and I can see it growing on me much like The Fixer did. This is a rough mix. Ed's vocals are "sitting on top" of the mix if that makes sense. That is distracting.
3) Sorry but as a guitarist I have to say, Mike should take a few more cracks at that solo, I know I'll take flack for that from the "McReady is God" crowd, but it's a free opinion, so take it for what it's worth.
4) One of the things I have to "put aside" for this song is the fact that it is called "Ole". I just don't get it. Ed's lyrics are usually my favourite part of PJ songs but I just am not feeling Ole as a call to action.
Bottom line, it's a decent but forgettable little punk rocker that will probably kick ass live, but I, like others hope it is not the next single.
On a happier note, only 3 days to T.O. 2, then 3 more days to Hamilton!!!
I didn't like Got Some on first listen but absolutely loved it after hearing the studio version.
Pearl Jam has this weird ability to release something like that this and it doesn't sound like them at all, but then it does if that makes any sense.
Yeah I remember with Got Some, didn't like it at first. Then eventually liked it. And now I don't like it again
They definitely have a wide range in music and can mix it up. Just look at say Even Flow, Who You Are, Sleight Of Hand, Help Help, The Fixer for example. 5 songs completely different from each other yet all (in my opinion) great songs and all kick arse. I just don't think Ole has that kick arse feel to it. For a band as creative as Pearl Jam, this song just seems a bit weak and lazy.
But its all good that everyone has different opinions and tastes in Pearl Jam. Much better than people just flaming and saying 'haters be hatin'

Have to agree. I said in another thread Ed's vocals sounded weak during that performance on Fallon.

Its great that its a free download. But its not a great song. Its not even a good song.
Probably on a par with Supersonic which is the worst thing Pearl Jam have ever recorded. In my opinion.
I don't get this whole new wave pop punk road Pearl Jam are taking. Its not them. Why try to be something your not?
I fucking love this band and everything it does. Until Backspacer came out and I just didn't enjoy that album.
Maybe its just a Backspacer out-take. Certainly sounds it. I hope the new album doesn't continue in this direction
Amazing how we are as a fan base. I for one love Supersonic and Backspacer is still one of my favorites. We all have such widely varying opinions.
It does sound like a Backspacer outtake though. I agree.
Yeah, I heard Supersonic for the first time Chicago night 1, 2009, before Backspacer was released. It was a bit rusty, but personally I like the punkish sound of it...as well as Ole after the first listen. I thought the same - Ole has the Backspacer sound.
I gotta say though - 9 studio albums and none of them sound like one another. I like the different sound from album to album...it shows their artistic range. If I wanted the same sound over and over, I could listen to Nickelback or Coldplay.
Olé was a nice treat to cap off or start PJ20 however u look at it. I bet its gonna get a big Olé....Olé Olé Olé..Olé when they hit Latin America. But anyhow, is anyone able to get the "mother" performance? I've been searching but no luck.
I've listened to this twice. I'm loathe to spend more than those 5 minutes of my life listening to this. That would include seeing it live. "Of the Earth" was one of the high points of a pretty lacklustre few shows for me last year and that's the direction I'd like to see them go in. This however, ugh. I've heard enough of Ed frantically barking lyrics over generic, punky power chords. I'd rather PJ release good songs that I have to pay for than turds like this that come for free.
I LOVE IT!!! I LOVE IT!!! I LOVE IT!!!! Oh man was I hoping for a new song!!! I loved it too!!! as soon as I heard Fallon say that it was a free download online, I didn't waste one second and I got up and I've listened to it probably about 50 times since then!!! one thing I have to say about it though...OLE!!!!!
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
this band always throws me for a loop and i LOVE it. i never thought pearl jam would have a song called Ole. in fact, when i heard jimmy fallon introduce it i was like  ...and after i heard it i was ...but now that i've had a few listens i'm like ...
love the music, love the lyrics. it's different and it works for me. OLE!

I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.
Ole - OK
Very Backspacerish to me. It's o.k. Nothing earth-shattering. I just hope we don't have another Backspacer sounding album. I like to see change. Nothing against Backspacer, just want to see a new direction! An Of the Earth sounding album interests me more right now with longer, more epic type songs. They are good at 2 minute rockers, but I would like to see something different.
They debuted Got Some and it wasn't a single, don't except to see Ole as a single either.
Not a big fan, honestly. I'm hoping that the new album is a return to No Code; this doesn't make it sound like it will be.
Anyway, still the greatest band on the planet

Yes. I always wanted them to get back to their punk roots. I don't understand all the hate going on.
Wish we got this in Montreal!
