  • well by the 27th/28th we'll know if PJ are playing, but there are so many different artists rumoured for this.... and just to clear something up, the guy that broke this rumour isnt the same guy who predicted soundgarden, RATM and that new years eve concert thing, it was someone different.
  • I have been to many many bdo's, including the 1st, and yes im over 25. They are not too bad of day if you plan it right. Plan to show up just before the 1st band you want to see. If you want to see a popular band on a main stage uo close, be prepared to get into the d a couple of bands before they play. Most importantly get plenty of fluids into you. I always take a empty camelback and fill it throughout the day. The bdo organises have started to broaden the demographics in the last 5 years,Neil young headlined a couple of years ago. The pj set will not be full of teeny boppers, the organises will have a band on one of the side stages aimed at that demographic.headliners do play full sets some years. Metallica is one example of this. And finally if you don't want to contend with a bdo experience, just hit up a side show.

the biggest thing for many people isnt the festival itself, i think it has to do more with the cost and the shortened festival setlist.... thats mainly one of my biggest reasons for not wanting to go. but if there are enough bands that i like also playing it would probably sway me.... i'd have no problem with them doing bdo aslong as they did their own shows in the same cities

Oh ok, so we find out the official BDO lineup on the 27th or 28th September? That's good to know about the guy who started the rumour too.

So the summation is if Pearl Jam do happen to play BDO we will get some other Pearl Jam non BDO concerts?
    2009 ~ Melbourne
    2011 ~ Canberra (EV)
    2011 ~ Melbourne 2 (EV)
    2014 ~ Melbourne BDO
    2014 ~ Melbourne 1 (EV)

It is entirely possible for PJ to do BDO and their own shows in each of the cities to... however it might be a bit of a hectic schedule I was working it out and these dates arent official, I'm just kinda going off what they would be if it was same kind of setup as last year provided sydney has a 2 day event again, if sydney only has one then its an extra day of rest or possible sideshow date.

Say PJ arrive in NZ on 16th Jan they have
17th-19th to play shows in NZ
    20th - Auckland BDO
    21st - Possible brissy
    22nd - Gold Coast BDO
    23rd - Possible brissy
    24th - Possible brissy/sydney
    25th - Sydney BDO
    26th - Sydney BDO
    27th-28th possible sydney
    29th - Melbourne BDO
    30th - 2nd of Feb possible melb/adelaide shows
    3rd Feb - Adelaide BDO
4th - cant see anything happening this day
    5th - Perth BDO
    6th - ? possible perth

However i dont see the sideshows being announced for a while just because PJ would be one of the main draws to sell tickets.
  • Pearl Jam have been coming to Oz every 2 yrs or so since 1995. A tour next would be expected...good surfing in January too! So I wouldn't be surprised. We will know by the end of the month.

Every 3 years, except between '98 and 2003, but they have also always followed an album release.

Except for the 5 year gap between 1998 and 2003. 2003 was during February. I remember Ed wishing everyone a Happy Valentines at the Sydney show I went to. :)

    snagging for info....
Kinda hoping they don't do BDO tbh. I expect they will come to at least Aus next year, like ppl have said they usually do after an album release. I went to Uncle Neil at the BDO when he came for that a few years ago & would go if PJ play it but a proper tour would be so much better.

I'm be glad that they're coming, but yes, their own tour would be preferable.

If this happens, I'll do the Adelaide BDO and the inevitable Melbourne side-show for sure.

(I should've done the same when Neil came a few years ago, though seeing him at the Adelaide BDO from front row centre was wonderful enough.)

Expect these to be BDO dates:

    Auckland Jan 20
    Gold Coast Jan 22
    Sydney Jan 26
    Melbourne Jan 29
    Adelaide Feb 3
    Perth Feb 5

Some artists call it the Big Day Off, as they have 2-5 days off betweeb shows. Plenty of time for sideshows, but I really dont believe they will play. They have never toured Australia twice off the back of one album, and took 11 years between their last 2 NZ visits.
    Brisbane: 14/03/98, 08/02/03, 10/11/06, 25/11/09
    Gold Coast: 19/01/14, 13/11/24
    Melbourne: 16/11/24, 18/11/24
    Ed solo: 12/03/11, 25/02/14

there is talk an album could drop before next Jan, so it's possible. a few times Aus has been the first place they tour after an album.

i will not go to BDO though.

  • Never done a big day out so it would be an exuse to attend my first
done plenty of other festivals but have avoided bdo

  • I went to my first bdo's this year and loved it. Went to both the Sydney shows, mainly because of the lack of a tool sideshow in sydney. I would love to see pearl jam there, as long as they do their own sideshows. But it's only a rumour, and heaps of other bands are rumoured to headline, pearl jam are only one of those bands.
  • A new Zealand newspaper said that they will announce the lineup on the 20th and 21st this month, hopefully it is pearl jam and the announcement is to coincide with the PJ20 movie!

Also, their wont be 2 Sydney bdo's again, and headliners normally only do sideshows in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

I think we should just all stop worrying until the BDO lineup is announced at the end of this month ...

and if PJ is headlining, we should then PANIC. :)

panic because big day out sucks so bad?

yeah i'd be really torn. i haven't been to a BDO since 2007 because of how bad it became. It's so not user friendly.

Kind of agree with this statement. I haven't been to one for a long time for the same reasons. Just seem to be alot of little idiots there who were more about getting off their faces on pills, buying their neon glow sticks and body paint than the music itself. However, it's a small price to pay if PJ do it, I'LL BE THERE IN A HEART BEAT. :D

it's definitely not a music festival that gives a shit about the music playing or they'd organize it in a way that made it easy to see and hear what you wanna see and hear.

usually the sound is so fucking shit if you're half way back at mt smart stadium that you may as well not be there.

i remember the sound cutting out during qotsa and it was like you were listening to music playing in a car parked outside with the windows almost the whole way up.
  • Someone who has been leaking bands for the lineup said PJ is not the headliner and that Radiohead was....still unofficial but I do remember hearing rumours earlier this year about radiohead being here around feb next year....
  • I really can't see them playing this. would be great but they have Been rumoured for the past 10 yrs
  • I very much doubt they'll be here for the BDO. And going by what Mike says in the Toronto Sun dated today, they haven't even finished the new album yet.

'You said you think in terms of what comes next. So what comes next? I hear you've been recording.

We do have five or six demos that we feel good about -- just rough mixes and things. But first, we have to rehearse for the tour and relearn those songs. We were just having a meeting over the phone about which ones to do. Sometime next year, hopefully, we'll go back in and record some music. We need to get about seven or eight more songs down to have a full record.

Is the new material heading in any specific direction?

It's in such an infantile stage that it's hard to say. Right now it's a logical extension of Backspacer. There may be a few more dark songs, and a few longer songs. It might not be as poppy.

And what about the set lists for this tour? What are we going to get?

I think we're going to pull deeper from our back catalog than we've ever pulled. That's what we've talked about. There may be a couple of gems that people haven't heard live ever.

So, what's the plan for the next 20 years?

Wow. Just to try to keep moving on. We can only do that. We only have today. You can plan, but life gives you other things. I would hesitate to say where we'll be in 20 years.'

I really hope it doesn't happen for the main reason that i am moving back from the UK next months & wont be able to afford it & sick of big out door festivals where to many pissed people make it a uneasy day. PJ shows by themselves please & hopefully indoors.

dont hold me to those dates, but I'm very confident that's what they'll be (Sydney may not be Australia Day).
After doing some investigations, 1999 & 2010 shared the same dates, as did 2001/2007, 2002/2008, 2004/2009, 2000/2005/2011. So, its generally every the same dates every 6 years, so, in theory, 2006 & 2012 will share the same dates. These were the 2006 dates

I believe they were set to headline in 2001, but cancelled due to the festival tragedy in 2000, along with Oasis (who pulled out due to other bands set to replace when Pearl Jam pulled out). Unfortunately their worries were justified when a girl died in the pit watching Limp Bizkit.

    Maybe! PJ tour Oz every 3 years or so (1995, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2009).
