“There should be a place where only the things you want to happen, happen”
Top three recommendations, all punk roots, the first two of which have inspired and informed Pearl Jam's members over the years. The last of which features a Detroit music/world punk icon:
1) DEVO - don't even consider 'Whip It'. Ignore 'Whip It' and YouTube old Devo clips. Devo was the epitome of groundbreaking punk music before that heinous song smoothed them into mainstream. That song might be the biggest misrepresentation of a band. Seriously. Devo flat-out thrashed. Check out "Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy," "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA," "Jerkin' Back and Forth," "Come Back Jonee," "Uncontrollable Urge."
2) FUGAZI - Simultaneously declared godfathers of several musical genres, depending on the critic you ask: post-hardcore punk, alternative rock, and 'emo' rock. But ask Ian MacKaye about the last one in particular, and he'll smack his head against the wall asking 'what the fuck does that even mean?' The band's music had a profound effect on Vedder in particular. I forget from which publication (Rolling Stone?) but he makes a comment - which is apt, accurate and captivating to music fans who love discovering new sounds - that all of Fugazi's records played continuously after another sound like one big-ass, never-ending loop of an album. Their entire catalog is that good. Seriously. The first time I tried to burn my personal favorite/best of cd of their stuff, I couldn't whittle down my list beyond 38 songs. Their sound runs the gamut from hard rock to laid-back instrumentals, all of it complex. Made possible by two lead singers and at times two drummers. They specialize in deconstructing traditional song structure and writing catchy, odd-time beats as MacKaye and Guy Picciotto (sp?) take turns leading the lyrics with their distinctive, vastly different singing styles. If you can't get into Fugazi and stay into Fugazi for album lengths, there is something wrong with you.
3) THE DIRTBOMBS / THE GORIES - Mick Collins is a punk/garage rock god, the precise definition of Detroit music influence. Arguably the first to create a new sound by blending unabashed blues strumming with punk sensibilities. Without Mick Collins leading the seminal punk Gories or fuzz/R&B Dirtbombs, there'd be no Jack White as you know him. No way. Don't believe me? Go YouTube and listen to any version of The Gories "Sovereignty Flight." It's the "Hardest Button To Button" before Jack White was buttoning up his own red and white shirts. Or check out The Gories' version of "Ghostrider," originally done by a band called Suicide. Collins' visionary guitar style makes that song SHINE ... The Dirtbombs, Collins' latest band since the early 90s, meanwhile, have been consistently rated one of rock music's top live acts over the years for a reason. They'll cover anything and their own unique/catchy spin on it, most recently an entire disc of redone electronica/disco music. Check them out!!!
Other bands worth checking out not mentioned here yet:
SLEATER-KINNEY (Olympia, Wash., band in the free-form song structure vain of Fugazi)
EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS (phenomenal harmony among 13+ band members cranking out catchy, spiritual/religious-based tunes - YouTube their Letterman performances of 'Home' and most recently 'Man on Fire'. Band is fronted by the wildly gifted Alex Ebert, of Ima Robot fame.
DRIVE LIKE JEHU / HOT SNAKES - San Diego area bands fronted by the same bad-ass guy Rick Froberg. Drive Like should've been bigger in their heyday nationally with their post-hardcore/prog sound. Hot Snakes are hot, hot, furious garage/punk. check em out!

Little Dragon - Great stuff right there. Just got into them via their newest album, Ritual Union. They have 3 albums total and all are great. Female singer has an incredible voice. If you are into LCD Soundsystem or Talking Heads, I'd highly recommend checking them out. All three of the albums are similar, but each have their own unique sound.
This song is so awesome. Gives me chills every time. (off of their Self Titled Album)
Twice (Black Room Session) http://youtu.be/tcP5ivpLbCM
The Weeknd - If your into R&B check this out now. Great voice and way different than mainstream R&B. Great production, very dark & mysterious. He's got 3 mixtapes - all free on his website...till he decides to release them officially (hopefully remastered, tho House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence already sound f'n amazing to me imo) then he'll probably take them down. Panty droppin music
Justice - Electronic - heavy bass influence. Their first album, I feel, is one of the best electronic albums ever. Solid all the way thru. If this doesn't get you bobbin your head and shaking your ass, then i feel sorry for you.
Kendrick Lamar - This guy is gonna make some serious noise once his new album drops in October. Straight outta Compton and Dre's new protege. His album, Section .80, released last year, has some of the best beats on a rap album since The Chronic 2001 imo.
The Recipe ft. Dr. Dre (first single off his upcoming album...shits pretty addictive ) http://youtu.be/RJc0M4CjmNg
I also recommend you check out "the needle drop" on youtube. He does video reviews of all the artists here and i usually agree with what has to say. Another great way to find new music, aside from Pitchfork and the likes.
Some others that have been mentioned that dont require further explanation:

I can't think of 3 without duplicating some other suggestions. But 1 of my favorites, that I don't think has been suggested yet:
City & Colour
For those lucky enough to be going to DeLuna, check him out. Check out the YouTube link below. It's a video I took from his show in Kitchener. Be warned: this is about as rockin' as he gets. Pretty mellow, heavy on the acoustic sound. And I am comfortable enough to say it: the voice of an angel. Seriously. At the risk of blasphemy, the only other vocalist that I have been drawn to just by the sheer beauty of their voice was Jeff Buckley.
I'm reluctant to even say it, because it is not representative AT ALL, but he used to be in Alexisonfire. TOTALLY different sound for any familiar with their work, but not his.
Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6nTa0jYJi0&feature=g-upl
