There was a time where I listened to 'Waiting Room' over and over and over. This was cassette tape days!
For anyone that has not listened to '13 Songs' by Fugazi they really should give it a try. What an awesome record.
I know EdVed is a huge fan of them as well.
Many of you have mentioned some great bands. too many for me to comment on to be honest. Some of you have similar taste to me and mentioned some bands i've not tried out yet so this will be a helpful thread.
I will name one band. Quite honestly if you listen to heavy music you will probably yawn because they have been hyped but if you don't listen to much heavy music they might be a nice hard rock/metal band for you. If you like mastodon, kyuss, high on fire etc please please please please please please

Red and especially the Blue album start to become more post metal type stuff and the vocals become a bit more "understandable" blue albums my fav.

The Tragically Hip: They're an acquired taste. But once you see 'em live, you'll be hooked for life. Best live show I've ever seen (sorry Pearl Jam). Guaranteed face melting every single time. Gord Downie is one of the craziest and most entertaining frontmen you'll ever see. Not to mention he's an extremely gifted lyricist/songwriter. I'd suggest starting with their 2-disc greatest hits collection "Yer Favourites", and if you like what you hear, start digging your way through their 12 studio albums. It's a lot of material to go through if you're new to them. But trust me, it's worth it.
The Arkells: Great songs with terrific melodies, super catchy hooks, and intelligent, thoughtful lyrics. Awesome live show too. Was lucky enough to see them open for Pearl Jam a couple years ago at Virgin Fest, and they absolutely killed it. These guys are the real deal.
I'd start with their debut album "Jackson Square". It's easily one of the best rock albums I've heard in the last 10 years. They have a new album coming out in October called "Michigan Left".
The Weakerthans: One of my favorite bands of all time. John Samson's brilliant lyrics were the first thing that attracted me to these guys back in 1997, and I haven't looked back since. They're just incredible songwriters, and their unique fusion of punk, rock, pop, folk, and country makes them one of the most original bands out there. They're impossible to pigeonhole.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Out of Boston they opened for Michael Franti and Spearhead on the Yell Fire Tour. Three of the most fun guys I've ever met in person, i even helped them with their equipment in Pittsburgh the last night of the tour with Michael. Can't go wrong with these guys with their activism and their love of the Red Sox.

Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
Great thread, love this idea. Well being from Canada I thought I'd post a couple Canadian bands worth checking out.
1. Matthew Good, a serious great solo artist and a small connection to pearl jam. On the 98 tour when Pearl Jam played Molson Park they made a day event of it and had a second stage playing throughout the day, and Matthew Good, then of the Matthew Good Band played. He's got a great voice and very deep haunting lyrics.
2. The Trews, another Canadian act, and as great as these guys are at writing balls out rock songs, their live show is a force to be reckoned with, if you ever hear of these guys playing near you, you must check it out, and you wont be disappointed. I've seen them start one of their songs, jam it out, bust it into some Stones or Zepplin or even Pearl Jam, jam it out some more and 10 minutes later come full circle back into their first song. And the singer Colin MacDonald has one helluva singing voice, and his brother John Angus can play the shit out of a guitar.
3. The Band, my god I cant stop watching the Last Waltz, if you've never seen it, run out and watch it. If you love music, you cant not love this!
Good choices.
But I would add:
54-40
The Tragically Hip
The Grapes of Wrath
Arcade Fire
Adam Ostrosser
Blue Rodeo

Coheed and Cambria. They're a mix of progressive, rock, and some pop elements that all blend together into some insanely catchy songs, but with a bit more brains that your average rock band. Check out "Welcome Home", "Three Evils", and "Time Consumer".
Deftones. I've simply never come across a band that sounds like them. They blend heavy music with pretty, atmospheric sounds so well that it's easy to lose yourself in the songs. "Cherry Waves", "Change (In the House of Seasons" and "My Own Summer (Shove It)" are all great tracks.
Modest Mouse. "Float On" isn't their only song. All I can say is simply check out the albums "The Moon & Antarctica" or "Good News for People Who Love Bad News", and go from there.
Thanks EPOTTSIII!
