    the lemonheads

Right on for the Lemonheads. They were my second favorite band at one point in the early 90's. It's a Shame About Ray is one of my all time favorite albums.

I'll also include Ryan Adams and The Smiths because neither get that much love from the average PJ fan. At least in the U.S.

  • i don't know if 'dredg' have been mentioned yet.... excellent band.
...Pearl Jam, a group filled with pride, passion, and intricate musicianship. Their music is full of subtle textures, rich color, soul-searching power, imagery, and eerie dissonance.

So I took your recommendation of Lungfish since I like Fugazi and I listened to Feral Hymns and I am listening to Indivisible and I have to say thanks. This band kicks ass. What else is good by them? Is there a must own album by them?

The brew - really good. The guitarist is about 20 or so, but he really knows hot to rock.

Awesome... Talking Songs For Walking is a must have in my opinion, just make sure you get the one that comes with the album ' Necklace of Heads' that way your getting 8 more songs.... Rainbows from Atoms was the first LF album I ever heard and I was hooked... So glad to share..Enjoy.

Jamie Cullum - has a song called 'Wheels' some people might like. I heard it on the radio one day and halfway through the song I bought it on iTunes; that's how much I liked it. Check it out for yourselves.

Buddy Holly - If you like that kind of stuff.

Nico has 3 or 4 songs I really like. German singer who was deaf in one ear, she had a very cool, distinctive tone in her voice. I really like it, anyway. Bob Dylan wrote a song for her to sing and she also sings a song by Jackson Browne. And obviously The Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale is one of my all-time favorite songs.

    Mumford and Sons
    Conor Oberst and Saddle Creek
    Taking back Sunday
    Incubus

I think these all came after anything before Pearl Jam would have a mute point.
Elliot Smith was waaay before his time. He killed himself the same year Cobain did. No one cares. Tool and Beck. Outkast! Sublime, Pepper... What should I do with my self? Gwen Stefani, Muddy Waters? Fischerspooner, Tori Amos? Dolly Parton, J.R. Cash...

Wow, it took 5 pages for someone to mention The National? Well for me they are easily as of today the best band in the world, including PJ. Nobody is writing songs and making albums as good as this band(maybe Radiohead if JG would pick-up his damn guitar and play it!). Matthew's voice is simply overwhelming and as musicians these guys are second to none, especially Bryan Devendorf on drums! I love everything about this band but, DAMN guys why are you playing the SHITTY Aragon Ballroom when you come to Chicago? Nevertheless I will be there and for anyone that hasn't checked this band out, you should!

Well, see, if you had visited this thread sooner, maybe The National would have shown up on page 3 or 4. Maybe even page 1.

    or 2.
  • I'd like to recommend Shack. NME once did a cover feature on them calling them "Britain's Best Band - and you've never heard of them" or words to that effect.

  • I prefer hard rock and the 'lighter' end of metal (not too much screamo, although I'm okay with some). My two favorite bands that came to light for me during the past decade are:

    1. Avenged Sevenfold - by far the most talented cross-genre band out there today. Good at everything from screamo metal to hard rock w/awesome shredding to rock ballads to borderline country. This band can do it all.

    2. Shinedown - I think they have a great hard rock sound.

Lesser known bands I would recommend who have made an appearance in the past couple of years:
    3. Ages Apart - these guys are fairly new - to my knowledge, only one album out on MP3. But it's a good album. Check it out on Amazon.
    4. The Sheepdogs - great Canadian band, these guys are my latest Canadian 'find'. But if you are not Canadian and have not heard The Tragically Hip or The Sam Roberts Band, those two bands are awesome and have alot longer and stronger track records. Sam Roberts newest album is awesome!
  • I agree on Shinedown. They do sound a bit slick and overproduced at times, and the 2nd album is garbage, but the first and third albums are really good. Call Me makes my son cry :D
