    why are they admitting guilt?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    this truly boggles the mind!

would you admit to something you didn't do to get out of prison? Or would you admit to something you DID do to get out of prison?
  • The State of Arkansas is trying to cover their asses right now. It is my belief, based on the information released today, that if there were another trial, the boys would win in a landslide. This would allow all three to leave prison with millions of dollars in state money.

This is why The State of Arkansas is making a plea deal with the WM3 tomorrow. By having a guilty plea, it would get the state off the hooks for the 50+ million dollars that would be owed to the boys for wrongful imprisonment.

The state knows that the new evidence would clear them of the crime and is trying to do everything they can to set these boys free with not a dime to their name.

I love the state I live in, but this kind of treatment and indecency cannot be tolerated. Arkansas needs to put up and shut up on this case!
Straight down the center for a hot chicken dinner!
  • If they don't plea guilty what would happen?

I don't see why they have been still locked up at this point, the evidence is telling of their innocence imo

I think the only reason they are making them admit guilt is so they cant go and sue the state for being wrong for all these years :x

You will admit to any thing when your life has been taken for the last 18 years. And all you see in the future is the same shit for another 18 years. Its a shame. When it all comes down to it. Its always about money for your life.

Shame on the system..either way, the murderers of these innocent boys will be free.
  • Wow. A lot of very uniformed "facts" and opinions being posted about a very serious case. Here's some recent info that's based more in reality than internet speculation.

    http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/20 ... his-three/

“I’ve been waiting for this day a long, long time,’’ said Dan Stidham, 48, Misskelley’s original defense lawyer and now a district judge in Paragould, Ark., who continues to endorse his former client’s innocence. “All I asked for was truth and justice.’’

The arrangement involves the three defendants pleading no contest to lesser charges in return for their immediate release, according to legal sources knowledgeable of the deal. The sources spoke on condition on anonymity because a gag order forbids parties in the case from discussing it.

The surprise announcement Thursday by Circuit Court Judge David Laser of Friday’s previously unscheduled hearing triggered a landslide of emotion from people connected to the case that shook Arkansas with prosecutors’ assertions that the slain boys were victims of a ritualistic cult murder.
  • And ...

John Mark Byers, Christopher’s father, said prosecutor Scott Ellington called Thursday morning to tell him that defense attorneys proposed a plea deal about two weeks ago that would lead to the release of all three defendants.

Unlike Branch, Byers believes the three are innocent, regardless of whatever plea might be reached.

“I think it’s a travesty to someone that’s a citizen in any state, to have to go to court and lie and say you’re guilty of a crime you didn’t do just to ensure your freedom of getting out,” Byers said. “They’re innocent. ... I know they’re being forced to plead to some other charge for their freedom.”

Byers said he plans to approach the defendants if they’re released to express his support.

“I plan on talking to all three of them and letting them know I don’t blame them for copping a plea to get out. I understand. It’s not their fault. I hold no animosity toward them. They did not kill my son,” he said.

you would admit to murdering children? brutally and viciously murdering children?

Can't their lawyers do better than this?

to get out of prison? yes.

then once out I would tell the truth. You only have one life. rotting away in prison is not the way to spend it if you don't have to.

What 'lesser charges' might these be?

Anyway, great news if they get out without compromising themselves too much in order to cover the states ass.

my husband said the same thing. Admit to whatever to get out.

What truth could they tell that is different than what they've been saying for the past 18 years? They have been claiming innocence and to suddenly plead guilty is a shocking turn of events. If the state has lightened up on them this much, there must be a reason why... why oh why can't they hold on a bit and go for freedom with a big 'ol NOT GUILTY?

I honestly don't know what I'd do.... I don't think I could admit to something so brutal if I was truly innocent.

I like to think I'd stick to my principles in such a situation. Truth is one of my highest values. But, ultimately, principles are for the privileged people who don't have to deal with harsh realities, and not everyone has that luxury - least of all people who have been raped, beaten, and locked up for 18 years and are facing a lifetime more of this before ultimately being put to death. Whatever deal they're being offered is certain; winning a new trial is not.

Admitting to something if you are innocent is no big deal. I would admit it and laugh in their faces as I walk away with my fingers crossed. First interview they do will be "of course I didn't do it"

we all know guilty/not guilty doesn't mean a whole lot in public perception.

it is incredibly stupid. confess to murder and be set free. don't confess to murder and stay in prison.

If they do plead guilty, they still may be able to collect a wrongful conviction settlement by claiming they plead guilty under duress.

They will have book publishers and tv producers offering them all sorts of deals

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but....wasn't new evidence submitted to the court last year about this time? (I remember EV and other's playing a benefit in Arkansas last year in regards to the WM3 and the new evidence. I think they also did an appearance on Larry King)

I'm very curious, if my initial statement above is true, if that will help to shed light on who actually committed these horrible crimes.

Based on articles and documentaries...it seems like the initial work done by law enforcement all the way back in 93 botched the job so bad, that there wasn't any concrete evidence to convict someone...

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's families/loved ones and the WM3 and their families/loved ones.

    What a f'n mess...

Unfortunately it seems as part of the plea that they have to acknowledge that the state has evidence against them, and could convict them if they wanted, so that will never happen, which also explains the guilty plea.

Well that should be the end of the "how dare they cop a plea!!" posts.

Wow. I think a lot of people are just repeating what various sources and news outlets are saying. Cant really blame them for this, get off your high horse.

If they are innocent, as it seems, I am glad they are free. My concern is that their guilty plea means no one will look for the real killers. That is NOT justice. It is not the fault of the WM3, but the system....they have turned it into a farce...and the WM3 have not had the chance to prove their innocence either, so they will always have doubt and mistrust..what a way to live!!! What happened to a fair trial??????

The issue of the real killers has been brought up many times. I don't know if there are any legal experts here that can answer this for us.

Is it up to them to prove their innocence in order for the pursuit of the actual guilty parties to recommence?

Or, will the case be reopened regardless of the pleas entered today?

I think this might be right. They strike up a plea deal to get them out of jail, while at the same time, it's really about the guys not ever being able to sue the state... I think getting them to admit wrongdoing takes focus off what it's really about. And they're not going to release that to the media.

Obviously the defendants' attorneys agreed to their clients admitting guilt... because that's probably not what's it really all about now. It seems like it's just for show, in exchange for something else.
