It's not that Riot Act is a bad album, it just doesn't flow well. Thats really all the beef I have with it. It's too all over the place.

  • Riot is my fav. It is politically charged & introspective. That album got me thru many difficult decisions.

I don't understand. How is it cool to say No Code or Yield is your favourite? Who thinks like this?! Where's Ten on the cool list? Or Vitalogy? I have no idea.

Riot Act has some great songs, but a lot of them just aren't the same standard as songs on previous albums....imo. Not saying they are "bad". I love a lot of them live. But they're just not as good. I've got Riot Act in the car at the moment. Haven't listened to the album in ages and I'm thoroughly enjoying it again....bit it's got nothing on No Code or Yield. The good majority of those songs are fucking genius.

    Cool list my arse!
I got into Pj on Vs and Vitalogy was the first of their albums I bought day of release (waited outside the record store until it opened and was late for school :D)...no code however is my favourite whether its deemed cool or not.
Top 5 for me are No Code, Vitalogy, Vs, Binaural then Ten.

Riot Act fucking rules! Someday "Thumbing My Way" will hit home to you all, and you will realize that this album is worth it just for that song alone and maybe Ghost & Cropduster. Thanks for listening, God bless & goodnite.

people bash everything on this forum. to me, riot act is a great album and a perfect glimpse of life and also the band at that time. that album transports me.

  • Loving Pearl Jam's records are very subjective to a person's place and time. I love Yield, Binaural and Riot Act because those were the records I jumped on board with the band. Vitalogy and No Code may be favorites, but I grew to love this band from 97-02. I don't pretend to be an expert but it seems they truly mastered the studio during this period.
  • i like riot act as an album, and it was even a better tour. i have seen pearl jam 37 times live, and my favorite show still since i first saw them in 1998, is the riot act show i nstate college pa in 2003, that was a sick fuckin show they went on around 9pm and ended at aroudn 1230am they even made the cd of it too. and holmdel end 2nd leg in jersey was sick too for sure a top 5 or 7 8 show. but state college pa is the best show i have ever seen
  • cropduster is a really good song live too

Not in a million years is Supersonic better than Can't Keep or You Are.

Surely you mean Supersonic is one of their worst songs?

When are people going to realise that music is subjective?? We all have different tastes in music....

That being said, Riot Act does, always has, and always will SUCK, lol

I realise that but come on......Supersonic is torture :lol::lol::lol::lol:

i love riot act my vinyl copy of it is probs one of my most favourite things! i love every single song from this album my least favourite from it is probs help help however i think it is awesome live. ghost is one of my favourite ever pearl jam songs and then uve got i am mine, half full, you are, save you, get right, green disease all in my opinion amazing songs which i will never wana stop listening to. i do like it when this album gets some love cus it dont happen enough! my favourite album along with ten nough said :)

not only is ghost one in a handful of pj faves for me, i think its their most underrated song. especially live, this track just rips. st paul 2003 is my perfect version and a perfect example, just 4 songs in (following of the girl >last exit >gtf to boot) and with slightly altered lyrics. its prob my 3rd most desired song i have yet to see live, behind only fatal and HTI. the album as a whole is one of my faves because it came out right around the time i became a bit 'obsessive' about this band. 2000 tour was my first show, followed by purchasing every boot from that tour, and then the 2003 tour was the first one i was on the board everynite there was a show, a-setlist a-following. :D good times. that said, its not my top album but it is up there.

interesting u say bout the time the album came out, i didnt discover pearl jam till 2001 when i was 16 so riot act was the first release for me as a fan so that may well have alot to do with it. oh and id love them to play ghost at a show i go to ive not been lucky enough to get it live yet, maybe one day :)

Love the album, I think it's way underappreciated, so glad to see it popping up lately on soundtrack and setlists, and before that on Eddie's stuff. Quite a few gems there.

Also don't know why people bash this album. One of my favourites: Love boat Captain, Ghost, You Are. There are a few gems on Riot Act.

I like the LP, I find it funny that so many people claim to not like it, but you always see people trying to buy it on vinyl and it sells for over $100.00 on vinyl, not bad for a record so many people don't like. Also when it first came out how many people on here were saying they didn't like it?

riot act > self titled & backspacer.

that's about all it's got going for it. for me... i don't think too many of the songs translate well live.

can't keep was a bitching opener until eddie hijacked it for his uke album ;)
  • I agree with dimitrispearljam when he talks about age and how that´s an influence on how people choose their best (or worse?!?!?!) PJ album. I´m 37 and I can´t put into words how natural was to me the transition between Vitalogy to No Code. 1996 was a hard year to me and No Code talks to me alot... Everyone has the right to choose their best album or whatever but to be honest with you all: I´m a PJ freak and I love all the albuns, each one in a particular way. It´s normal I believe, You grow listening to a band and it grows on you. I don´t have a better answer to that, sorry. So direct to the point:

    1° - Riot Act is an amazing album and I believe it´s not fair call it weak;
2° - I have a crush :D on Backspacer but there´s a song that I don´t dig as the others: Supersonic (even though it shares some chords with Mankind)...

That´s it! Sorry if is too loog...
    Greetings from Brazil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
