ive seen one. and was the worst pj gig ive been to. crowd was dead.

set: Love Boat Captain, Corduroy, Save You, Hail Hail, Help Help, Even Flow, I Am Mine, Better Man, You Are, Green Disease/Not For You, Thumbing My Way, Given to Fly, Elderly Woman, Insignificance, Go

enc 1: Bushleaguer, Do the Evolution, Last Kiss, Black, Crazy Mary, State of Love and Trust

enc 2: Give Peace a Chance Singalong, Soon Forget, Yellow Ledbetter, Rockin’ in the Free World

That's not a bad set at all...In fact if you added All or None, it may even be pushing "pretty fucking spectacular" border.
I have no patience for bad music and stupid people...

it would be if you like riot act. but to 98% of pj fans, it's a pretty weak setlist. considering they soundchecked oceans, in hiding, last exit and gimme some truth a few hours earlier.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.

The winning-touchdown-head shake in Help, Help, the drag-yourself-across-the floor sleeze in Half Full, and the African Tribal dance in Can't Keep, are not recognized by all listeneners, as hard as that is to imagine by those so intuned.

  • My first problem is that there isn't enough Stone and Mike, and I have never heard anyone mention this about the album before. Matt actually has more songwriting credit than either one of them! Mike's contributions are practically nil. The only song he gets any credit for is Save You, but then again so does the rest of the band; that song was very co-written. Not big on the Matt Cameron songs You Are and Get Right, at all. Also, there's just not enough noisy rockers for me, especially on an album with 15 tracks. Thumbing My Way is one of my least favorite ballads - and this band can do ballads like no other. Overall the lyrics don't blow me away, probably because Eddie didn't write them all(I do love the occassional lyrics from the other guys, but it has to be mostly Eddie lyrics). And then of course there's Boom......he has grown on me over time, but I wasn't crazy about him being on the album.

For me, Riot Act is sub par in comparison to their other albums. Overall their 90's albums were the best, just like the Stones put out their best stuff in the 60's. I love a handful of tracks from RA(especially I Am Mine and All or None) but overall I find it pretty weak and I enjoy it the least - by far.

Couldn't put it better! Most of the stuff sounds rushed, like they banged it out as quickly as possible.

In addition to I Am Mine & All Or None which are great - I think You Are is pretty good, and Green Disease is quite fun. I love the riff on Bu$hleaguer but not the song.

Don't care for anything else - Love Boat Captain is horrible - What were they thinking?!

Out of the the 70-something shows in '03, Get Right was played at 16 of them. And Cropduster is a pretty cool song.

The major reason I don't love Riot Act is definitely Boom's organs. I just don't like the sound of his keyboards.
But, unlike you Boom has not grown on me over time.

RA favs: You are, Help Help, 1/2 Full, All or None.

Okay, I am totally kidding of course. But I do love Love Boat Captain! Of all the studio albums, I probably like Backspacer the least but there aren't any that I don't like.

i did only have to see get right once, but after multiple shows with cropduster, you are, and ghost the album wears on you.

I didn't enjoy hearing those songs so many times listening to the 2003 bootlegs - after a while they all started to blend into one grey mush - and it switched me off to the album for a while. When I went back to the whole studio album afresh though, a while later, I got on a lot better - I think many of the Riot Act songs don't work very well live - for me it is a studio album, with the mood, the production and  the studio vocals being the major strengths - I think the vinyl of Riot Act brings all these things to the fore, and I love listening to it.

exquisite? reserved for those attuned to... sheer brilliance? trust me, riot act is nowhere near a kid a or pet sounds.
  • My favorite pearl jam album and also the last real pearl jam album. Self titled and bs was a little too poppy imo.

You're not going to enjoy AllMusic's review of Riot Act!

btw - I read a certain amount of 'tongue placed in cheek' in Rollings' little piece ;)

The thing that grabbed me most about that review was that they thought Yield was "Spartan". It might not be as fancy as Binaural, but I always thought its production was pretty slick and had some complex arrangements. Regardless of whether or not people like it, I wouldn't think it would be considered Spartan. I don't really think they meant is as an insult, but I don't think the adjective fits, at least not in the way I understand it. Songs like No Way, Wishlist, Given To Fly, Push Me Pull Me, Low Light, All Those Yesterdays, MFC, etc are far from straightforward bare-bones rockers. And I say that as somebody who enjoys a good straight-forward bare-bones rocker.

I agree, a strange concept to apply to Yield. I don't think any Pearl Jam album is really Spartan - they've got three guitarists for chrissake!

You're right...it's much better to hear "Betterman" and "Corduroy" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
